As a lightning storm creeps in, we make our way into a long vacant iconic department store. This Kmart and Circle grocery store closed in the late 1990's and never reopened. Join me as I take a look through this decaying, treacherous and terrifying abandoned Kmart store.

We had one where I used to live. I'd always ride my bike there after school. Then I noticed that they got rid of most of the electronics section, where I'd usually go for video games, and then later, I noticed how the shelves were emptier than usual. A few weeks later after I moved, I found out it closed down. Not surprised, we had a Wal-Mart just down the same road. Now it's in the middle of being converted into a health care facility.

Kmart was a store that was stuck in the 80’s. It never changed. That’s why I love it so much because it was the closest thing to a time capsule to me. The Kmart in my town shut down in 2006. I went it like 3 times but it felt so comfy

Yea, I remember those days... Jake, still in high school, nervously laughing and adding his own spontaneous comments as he read the script. (And people giving him crap for it in the comments. 😕) ... That stuff never bothered me tho, because it was clear the content was always well researched and interesting. Jake just needed to find his comfort zone because this was different from filming himself with his friends. But then, I think it might have been that first local mall Target episode - with the mall manager interview, something just clicked and I remember being really, really impressed with the entire episode. From then on, each episode has been even more interesting and more impressive as we've gone along. Great job, Jake, to you and your entire team! I look forward to watching each new video, every time! 😃

Yeah when I worked for Sears I did the same thing, and to be fair, our Sears really did have great prices and sales with decent quality clothing if not much else. Kmart in my hometown closed not too long after Walmart opened across the street, and had always been a hotspot for shitty teenagers to steal from. Unfortunately, I was one of those shitty kids (don’t worry, I got arrested and learned a lesson) and you wouldn’t believe how popular the stores in that area were for being robbed, I’m surprised they stayed open as long as they did. Used to have fights and shootings in the parking lot and shit, and this was right next to my first High School. Sears seems to always have stores in the shitty parts of towns or just shitty towns in general, whether they’re Kmarts or full on Sears. It’s sad, too, because Sears had some really great ideas and cute clothes and huge sales like I said earlier, but had no idea how to market them. On top of that, while the Sears I worked for paid better than most retailers for entry level cashiers (I made $10.15 an hour + commission + credit card sign up bonuses of either $2 or $4 per card, i performed 2nd in store and 3rd in district and made somewhere close to $500/a week part time, this was when minimum wage in California was $9/hr in early 2015), and overall, they were very kind to employees and it was a good place to work...until it wasn’t, after your first couple weeks. They were so into your metrics or how many CC sign ups you got and how many Shop Your Way members you signed up and how many reviews you got that they started firing people that had been there for years over it, which meant that nobody wanted to work there either. Sears is closing it’s doors here officially right now, and it’s for financial reasons as well as the fact that they have nowhere near enough employees and weren’t getting any new ones no matter what perks they could offer. Kmart was just the same. Sad to see such an old company who were the cornerstone of so many innovative ideas shit the bed and run out of any creative marketing or real attempts to improve, and it seems the problem started long before the 2010’a

Really liked the cinematic opening as you drive up to the Kmart while the classic jingle plays. Juxtaposed with the lightning and the empty Flint surroundings, really sets a super creepy mood. The quiet, with that footage, is the most unnerving combination you could've gotten.

Only discovered this channel a few days ago. Tonight I got to this video. Odd timing, as I just found out yesterday that the abandoned (roughly 6 years) KMart in my town was just razed sometime in the last week. 400 apartments will be going up in its place. I mean, we really need the housing space here... but it's just... weird... to see the building gone.

The area was always not too great, but its really gone downhill the past ten years or so. I've always wondered what happened to that store since it has closed.

I remember going to the K-Mart in White Lake, Michigan with my mother back in the 90's. I used to hate when she bought something for me and would put it in layaway. You could make a hell of a house out of this place. Think about it: You build a regular flat roof home of 5000 square feet in the middle of this place after you gut the thing and put a bunch of skylights in to let in light. You never have to worry about grass to cut, you can park your cars without worrying about snow or ice, and your kids can play in side and run around like crazy, even during the worst of winter. You don't have to heat the whole building, just your inside actual home. And you can develop the parking lot into a strip mall right on the main road. Hell, you could put a small subdivision inside that building, and the homeowners association would only have to take care of the basics of the building. If the roof leaked, so what?

In Forestdale, Alabama, a suburb just northwest of Birmingham, Alabama, there is an old outdoor strip mall that once housed a Kmart. Both the Kmart and the store next door (a grocery store called Delchamps) closed shortly after a woman was shot and killed in the parking lot, about 25 years ago. No store has used either space since. Up until about 2011, when I worked the night shift in that area, some of the lights appeared to still be on. The Rite Aid drug store closed about 20 years ago, and the Guadalajara Mexican restaurant about 15 years ago. The Birmingham police have a small substation in the opposite end from the Kmart that was opened about 10 years ago. The building seems to have escaped tornado damage when the storms came through on April 27, 2011, and last time I looked, the large outdoor clock on the building appeared to still be working (granted, this was about 2 years ago). I drove by yesterday, and the building still looks to be in decent, if worn condition, at least on the outside. Couldn’t see the clock due to heavy traffic and heavy rain. I’d be curious to the inside condition, but even with the police presence, I’d be apprehensive about trying to enter due to the high crime rates of the area. Edited to add: I’ve seen a couple of KZbin videos that claim to be the Kmart I mention, but the videos don’t match up with what I remember of the building, and I spent a LOT of time there since several family members worked there.
