Hello hello! I hope you are all well! :) Ever since finding Moto Hagio's work, I have become extremely interested in this era of shoujo manga, so I'm very much looking forward to hearing your thoughts. Either way as always, CC will be coming in a hot minute after KZbin has done it's automatic ones :) I'm incredibly busy atm, so I have been having to make this videos on the fly, but I'm sure everything will be running again as usual in a couple of week (and so the CC will be there in advance as well). As usual please enjoy this haiku: i could eat it! this snow that falls so softly, so softly - Issa

I really love retro shojo manga, it’s one of my favorite hobbies. My favorites are Ryoko Ikeda’s The Rose Of Versailles, Suzue Miuchi’s Glass Mask and Yumiko Igarashi’s Candy Candy. I love that flowery, yet melancholic aesthetic, with many symbolisms and deep meanings. Shojo mangakas of that time and their stories are criminally underrated and they certainly deserve more recognition.

These were my mom's favorites as well. I like reading Seinen but I started reading The Rose of Versailles and wow! Love the way Shojo manga evokes emotion.

I discovered them thanks to “Oni-sama e...” by Riyoko Ikeda, and “Tomas no Shinzo” by Moto Hagio who is my favourite, unfortunately in France we have a few translations of her works :( I would love to have mor from Fantagraphics. Moto Hagio is incredible she deserves so much recognition in Western countries

Wow that's so awesome!! And yeah I totally agree, Hagio totally deserves more recognition! I was looking up different translations of her work and except for in Italy, only a few of her works have been translated. Lil' Leo btw is going to be published in English in March though which is really exciting! :D

keiko takemiya is one of my favorite mangaka, i completely lost it when kaze to ki no uta got published in spain!!! i read it years ago through an unfinished fan translation and being able to finally experience it in its entirety brought me so much joy despite how tragic of a story it is. i had no idea rose of versailles was licensed in english though, i've been wanting to read it for years! i recently bought the first volume of the poe clan though so i'll have to save up a bit first😭 this is probably one of my favorite videos you've made, fantastic content!!

Ooh that's lovely!! I would love to give Kaze to ki no uta a chance, though I'm picking Rose of Versailles next week, really stoked for that!! :D But yeah the copy is hardback just like the Poe Clan so it's super expensive! 😭 Btw, part 2 of TPC is coming out most likely in 2021, it has been hard for the translator to find enough time to work on it -- it's nice to know it will get finished eventually though :) Thanks so much for watching and I'm so glad to hear how much you enjoyed this video! :D

I highly recommend you read the manga "A Cruel God Reigns" by Moto Hagio. It is easily the best manga I have ever read. I binge read it in a week despite the fact that the subject matter of the manga was so dark and disturbing that reading it became mentally exhausting. I constantly had to put it down and stop reading to walk around for a few minutes before I could pick it up again. By the time I had finished reading the manga, I felt so drained that I had to watch something more lighthearted to make me feel better. Nevertheless, I simply could not stop thinking about this manga for a week after I had read it. If you suffer from mental illness or trauma, I do not recommend you read this manga. To read this manga, please be sure you are in a healthy enough mental state.

Such an interesting, informative, and well-researched video! So much good history in one place! I think you might enjoy the morning drama that NHK did maybe almost 10 years ago, called ゲゲゲの女房about the wife of Mizuki Shigeru, author of ゲゲゲの鬼太郎, one of the earliest horror manga. It also shows a little of the early industry dynamics with shojo manga you discussed.

Very informative video, so interesting! I love this style of drawing a lot, but I haven't read that many Shojo titles from that era.

Hello I’m a new subscriber and want to ask about your thoughts on the current scene of isekai and historical/ fantasy shoujo mangas and whether you have read comics from other countries like manhuas (mostly from China) and webtoons/ manhwas (mostly from Korea)?

Ooh I haven't had much chance to get into the current scene of isekai and historical/fantasy shoujo, but it is something I'm looking forward to as I continue to create more content :) I have read a couple of manwha, though mostly the horror ones :) I don't think I've read a manhua though, but if you have any recommendations I would love to hear them :)

Ah, yes, the queens of shoujo. They really know how to make you suffer, don't they? A video on Keiko Takemiya specifically would've been interesting. Not one artist before her was able to awaken the murder instinct in me quite as well.

No one here talking about Masako Watanabe, who wrote the horror manga Saint Rosalind, or Hideko Mizuno, who influenced Moto Hagio :(

As Alma said I mentioned both in the video, but I think you meant in the comment section right? I think with some of the mangaka it's hard to get a hold of their work, both in English and Japan, which is really unfortunately -- so I guess that's why not many people might have spoken about them.

@@TheArtisanGeek Someone began scanlating Saint Rosalind and it's gotten some comments so I'm hoping that will encourage publishers to pick it up (manga publishers here won't pick up series unless they're popular and that come from scanlations I've even suggested Hoshi No Tategoto which has no scanlation, multiple times and they didn't get it, because they say, it's too old, but then they get the latest manga which has a scanlation that updates frequently and the manga still manages to sell well) I've also suggested Fire! by Hideko Mizuno to Seven Seas only for them to get the atrocious Lupin the third manga by Monkey Punch. Manga publishers don't see classic manga as worthy unless it has an anime or the manga is made by men.

@@TheArtisanGeek Ah, sorry if I sounded too harsh. It's just that the issues with Scanlation and legal releases are so hotheaded and well, I apologize for saying that.
