I had the KitchenAid Superba in harvest gold. We had it permanently plumbed in, although it was a portable freestanding. We didn’t use it that way. Amazing washing ability. Dishes were done quickly especially on holidays so we could re-load it with all the dessert plates. These new dishwashers can’t hold a candle to those vintage workhorses.

My parents had a very similar if not the same model Kitchen Aid to your built in one. It replaced the original 1964 Kitchen Aid that had been installed when they had their house built. They bought it sometime in the mid 70s and it only ever needed one repair from new until they sold the house in 1999. The detergent cup wouldn't open during the cycle and I believe it was a fairly easy fix. I have a 1982 Maytag portable similar to yours except mine has a dry heat on off option on the left side. I bought it from a used appliance store back when I lived in apartments back in the mid to late 90s. The appliance store told me they got it with a burned out motor so they put a brand new motor and belt on it and that was all it needed. I used that machine as my daily driver dishwasher for about 25 years. The only repair I had to do to it was the belt broke after about 20 years and I just bought the part and replaced it myself. About three years ago I bought a house that came with a modern Samsung dishwasher built in. It works sort of. It doesn't clean as well as the old Maytag and it takes almost three hours to complete a cycle. The Maytag now lives in my cellar and is available for emergency backup duty. I Installed the special aerator on my laundry sink so I can just hook it up and be back in business if the Samsung breaks down. I have used it a few times during the holidays when I have lots of extra pots and pans and it still works great and gets everything clean in about 45 minutes. That's what I call high efficiency! Taking three hours is ridiculous.

Thanks for the dishwasher tour! I actually own a Kitchen Aid KDS-20 and used it this morning. It still works perfectly. Got it new in 1985 when my house was built and it's almond like my stove and fridge. It's had a few repairs, some I did myself like replacing the plastic upper rack rollers and fixing the detergent cup not opening. I had to replace my silverware basket because holes developed in the bottom and silverware would fall through. Also both pumps have been replaced. I'm so glad I had that done instead of replacing it. I saw in the stores that the new Kitchen Aids were just fancy Whirlpools. I always use Low Energy and Dry Heat Off and let my dishes and silverware air dry afterward with the door cracked open. Superba was their buzzword for their top-of-the-line model. Mine came with a free Kitchen Aid Food Processor, which I also still use. Both are very sturdy and made to a standard that's long gone. The dishwasher has pieces made of real metal and covered in real chrome. Very heavy duty and not "computerized." My grandmother had the portable Kitchen Aid and it always worked well and before that she had a GE Mobile Maid that was OK but a bit small. My mom had a 1953 GE Dishwasher when her house was built. Very unusual. It was a tub that pulled out from under the counter and had to be loaded bottom first and then glasses in the top. One small detergent cup and one thumbwheel knob to start it going. Later replaced by a 1973 Kitchen Aid and then a 1990 Kitchen Aid that she still uses.

My grandparents had a brown under-the-counter model Kitchen Aid dishwasher. Their last house was built in 1964. I don't know what year the dishwasher was from. It worked wonderfully and exactly as you described. It was still working wonderfully until 2005 when my Maw Maw died and the house sold. The dishwasher detergent that my Maw Maw used was in a powdered from (Cascade or Electrosol). The detergent dispenser had cups that you could fill according to the load. I can't remember if it was according to the length or type of the cycle. We rinsed the dishes clean and didn't load greasy dishes into the dishwasher. At 50+ years, I still do that. There were dishes to cook in, dishes to serve on and dishes to store in, many simply did not go into the dishwasher. I gather you remember those times as well. Our family tradition was that Mother and I (the girls) helped Maw Maw clear the table, change the table cloth, reset the centerpiece and candles and clean the kitchen after meals. Those were some of the sweetest times for me. Thank you for the wonderful trip down memory lane, this video hit a nostalgic nerve right before Mother's Day. Maw Maw and Mother are both gone now. I don't have children.

Hi CC - thank you for sharing your memories of you Maw Maw and her kitchen. I know what special times those were - and that Kitchen Aid dishwasher she had was a good one! Built to last! I still have dishes that can't go in the dishwasher, but I don't mind washing them by hand once in a while. There was an art to serving food and preparing a table - nice traditions! Thanks so much!

Hi Kevin, I just watched this video and am so pleased to see your dishwasher collection, so nice. When I was little we had a top.load GE that would keep running if you opened the lid mid cycle, my Mom got fed up with that machine and ordered a Kitchen Aid Superba, the same model as your collection only in avocado green, this machine lasted for more than 30 years and when it died beyond redirection we looked for another and found one like your white Superba someone was replacing because they wanted a Stainless steel front dishwasher,gO for not tell them about swapping the front panesl to SS. That machine is still going strong to this day and my Mom is now 89. Best to you, Brett

"They use more water, and they use more energy, . . . ", and that's why it is a superior dishwasher. Lucky find! Hotpoint's version of that brown on that 2nd Kitchen Aid was "Coffee". I bought a new, coffee Hotpoint refrigerator for Mom in 1976, at Christmas. Excellent video. Thanks for sharing!

@@jakeblake231 The old Kitchen Aid dishwashers took 60 to 90 minutes to do a complete cycle. The one I had used a total of 4 gallons of water for the wash and rinse cycle. My new Maytag dishwasher I have now takes 3 1/2 hours for a cycle, and uses the same amount of water. I bought Maytag this time since the three new Kitchen Aid dishwashers I owned from 1998 to 2021 stopped working, and needed repairs that were almost the cost of a new machine. Since the late 1990's the quality of the Kitchen Aid dishwasher has declined substantially. As for the saying that the old machines use more energy and water is a bunch of crap. A new machine that takes 3 1/2 hours to complete a cycle is not energy efficient. My old Kitchen Aid took 60 to 90 minutes, and the dishes were also spotless.

@@sharonlatour6230 Whirlpool also bought the Kitchen Aid brand. After they bought them they started to come out with Kitchen Aid dishwashers that were nothing more than rebranded Whirlpool products. People call them Whirl Aids. When this happened the quality sunk to junk level. Whirlpool then bought Maytag in 2006, and did the same to the high quality appliances Maytag made. I was in the appliance store looking at Whirlpool, Maytag, and Kitchen Aid. The insides were all the same. The only difference was the name on the front panel, and price. Three different prices for the exact same dishwasher. The Whirlpool was the cheapest, Maytag priced in the middle, and Kitchen Aid was the most expensive. The Maytag I bought had a square pump design that was different than the common round design. The square design really works this time. Now Whirlpool has a Kitchen Aid on the market with the Square design like they offered on the Maytag.

Kenmore Elite wasn’t even around 30 years ago. That model was introduced during 1999, along with the Catalyst washing machine and dryer. Whirlpool made the Catalyst washer and dryer one year later and introduced the Calypso washer and dryer in 2001. Kenmore made the Calypso washer and dryer with all those illuminated pushbuttons during 2002 and the last one with cycle knob and illuminated pushbuttons one year later. That company introduced the Quiet Supreme Ultra Wash dishwasher during 1988 and Ultra Wash models with Soil Removal System during 1996.

I don't have a dishwasher & it's been over 30 years since I used one, but the one my mom had was a portable one & usually ended up being more of an additional cabinet, with additional counter space. If I was to get one it would be a portable one for that reason. One of the things that you could have mentiined, with all your old pyrex & other vintage items, is do not put them in the dishwasher. They remove the finish & frequently the patterns off of the glassware or even pottery with the soap that is used & will also scratch it up. There are folks that will try to "fix" the problem wigh "Bartenders Friend" but usually that just makes it worse. I hand washed ALL my old stuff even when I had access to a dishwasher for that reason. Have been enjoying your channel & am glad I found it a couple of days ago.

I remember the Kitchen Aid dishwashers came with white panels that you could turn around if you wanted a black front. I had one in a house I lived in once. We remodeled the kitchen, and wanted black appliances. I remember reversing the face panel on that dishwasher. That dishwasher really cleaned the dishes, and I now live around the corner from the house we remodeled the kitchen in. The Kitchen Aid dishwasher we once owned is still in that house, and is still running to this day. Kitchen Aid also rebranded their dishwashers under the Insinkerator name. They are exactly the same insides and mechanicals. The only difference was the name. I wish I still had one of the old machines. The new dishwashers are done for in 8 to 10 years and have to be replaced.

I purchased a new Maytag WU700 dishwasher in 1991 when I bought my first house. It was the next model to the top of the line WU900 (I think that is the model no.) that had all pushbuttons and no dial. The WU700 could clean anything without ever pre-rinsing. I loved the reverse rack design with plates, pots and silverware on top and glasses/cups of on the bottom. All the tines on the top rack could be folded down to accommodate any size pot or pan. It was loud but the cycles were fast. The Light Was was 67 min., Regular 75 min., Pots & Pans 90 min. and Rinse/Hold 12 min. There were option buttons for Normal or Sani wash, Power Dry, Temp Boost and Energy Saver. The wash arms had smaller holes than the Kitchen Aid so the force of the water jets was stronger. There was a full sized wash arm on both the bottom and top as well as the central spray.

You are so lucky. I'd give anything to get my hands on a "Hobart" KitchenAid Superba. What a lot of people never knew at the time, was the KitchenAid dishwasher was actually a Hobart Commercial dishwasher that was designed for small coffee shops and where they just didn't have the room or the need for a Hobart conveyor tunnel type dishwasher. So they took the commercial model and designed it for domestic use. That's one of the reasons the KitchenAid dishwashers cleaned so well and lasted so long. The KitchenAid was one of the more expensive brands, but considering that you gor a commercial level dishwasher, they were worth it. As for how much noise they made during operation, the water hitting the inside of the door made more noise than the Hobart Gold Seal motor did. LOL Still, it was music to my ears.

Nice! Grew up with dishwashers as the house we bought in 1970 had an early 60's GE in it, it was the original machine to the house when built in 1962 as it matched the cooktop and oven, all three were bright yellow. Depending on the house, some were coppertone, some turquoise, some yellow and some may be pink, all were GE's that I know of as the houses were built by the same construction company for the most part when the area was being built at the time (Evergreen builders). Anyway, it had the Plastisol plastic lined, steel tubs that were very prone to scratching and rusting as it only took one punch of a fork to begin it rusting, even though there was a patch kit to "fix" them, but once the moisture got behind the plastic, the tubs were done for after a few years. I suspect that was what took ours out by 1974 and my parents replaced it with a white Custom I think it was KitchenAid and we may have had a dud as there were issues with it from new. It was still in the house when we sold it in 1985. Sadly, KitchenAid now is owned by Whirlpool, as so many others are (like Maytag) GE is I think still a separate entity when it comes to its DW's. I have a 2015 era KitchenAid with stainless steel tub, not the quietest as it as the food disposer (soft) but it cleans the dishes fairly well, even though it is a basic model, but is what they call, a "tall tub" as the door takes up the entire front of the machine, unlike dishwashers of the past with the separate lower fixed panel. My parents have had 2 later GE Potscrubbers in another house they owned from the mid 80's to the late 90's when my Mom sold it after she became a widow. The first one was purchased I think a year after we bought the place when the original mid 70's Whirlpool basic model dishwasher kicked the bucket, the first GE died in the early 90's and I think the pump began to leak so it got replaced with a second Potscrubber model and that one still was a chugging when that house was sold. By then, the original kitchen which was all dark brown (thanks to the then popular fashionable thing to do brown or gold or some such in the mid 70's when that house was built (1974) but my parents, redid the kitchen in I think 1991 and went with pickled stain cabinets and white countertops that lightened up the dark, dreary all brown kitchen in orders of a magnitude as it had become an interior room after 2 additions with the original owners so the lone kitchen window became a pass through for the family room. Sadly, the people that bought it from us had to totally rebuild the house a number of years later when an extension cord in the garage shorted (from what my mother understood as she kept in touch for a while) and the fire spread to the attic, well, you can guess what happened after that. Anyway, the house looks much the same as it ever did so without prior knowledge, you'd never know it was rebuilt about 15 years or so ago.

My first dishwasher was a "Lady Kenmore" in avocado I would guess from the 70's. The top rack was suspended from a rail in center of the top. It had the jets underneath the rack and the rack was round. When it was running the rack would spin as the water hit the dishes. I didn't think much of it at the time, but in retrospect it was very cool.

1980 I was in a rental duplex that had a portable dishwasher where the formica top raised up. The top rack lifted out to expose the bottom rack so I had to load the bottom first before I could load the top. So forget about adding a dish. Then I would place the top rack in, where it was suspended from hooks, and finish loading it. I don't remember what brand it was. When I was young, my sisters and I fought over who was going to unload the top or the bottom rack because none of us liked to put away all of that silverware😂 In later years, in a different place, I had a portable Maytag with a butcher block top. I remember once when I had to take it to Montgomery Ward to get repaired, when we tipped it back to load it in the trunk of my car, dog food fell out of holes in the bottom. A mouse had stashed it in there for the future.😂 Now I have a whirlpool that I love because it has a China setting. It does a very good job, and there is no comparison to the newer models that take forever to cycle. This has been a great demonstration, and I love each one you do. So glad I discovered your channel.

I always wanted one of those Kitchenaid Superba models but no such luck. There was a reason they were referred to as a hurricane in a box! I currently have a modern Kitchenaid but it's just a glorified Whirlpool and not the same. It's sad that the real Kitchenaids and Maytags are no longer. For many years we had a built-in version of the Maytag. Ours had a few more options such as a temperature boost option, but was very similar with the same control knob and the reverse racks. Everyone who came over to our house for dinner thought putting the plates on the top rack and the glasses on the bottom was the strangest thing! It may have been different but that thing cleaned exceptionally well.

@@cavalcadeoffood Maytag's reasoning for putting the plates on the top rack was less effort to unload the machine. It made sense when you think about it. Less distance from the rack to the cabinet for heavier things like plates.

Another KZbin channel that deals with technology; went into a long format video comparing traditional powder, liquid and modern pods of various types. Liquids and pods do not always clean consistently and with pods do not allow the use of detergents in the prewash cycle. Great old machines.

I Kevin! Thanks for sharing these with us. I've been curious as to what the brown portable was in the background. I have 3 KA dishwashers - one installed and two in storage. Also have a Lady Kenmore portable in coppertone that I use as a back-up. They work so much better than anything today. I'm shocked at how LONG new dishwashers take to cycle. It's like 3-4 hours I think. Ridiculous and unnecessary. While you mention the old machines use less water/energy, I'd say it's a wash (no pun). With as long as the modern ones run....who knows? Anyways, did you know your upper racks on the KA are adjustable for height? If you look on the sides of the rails, you'll see a little white knob on each side and you can adjust how high or low the upper rack needs to be. Terribly handy for large or long stemmed glasses! Also, do you know the approximate manufacture years on these? Cheers!

Hi Adam! Wow - you've got a nice collection of dishwashers! In the KA manual, it shows how the racks can be adjusted, but I must admit I've never used this feature - although I should. Wine glasses especially! I believe the white KA is from the early 80's and the brown rollaway is from the late 70's. These really do out perform most new dishwashers. Hope all is well with you!

Good to hear from Maryann. Kevin, thanks for sharing this segment on the dishwashers. Was so excited to see this vid. Had no idea that Hobart owned Kitchen Aid. Will have to follow up on some additional research regarding the company. I miss the push button control panels, bc I knew exactly what cycle I engaged compared to the new GE rotary dial. I can easily overshoot a cycle, even w/ the slightest turn of the knob, & then I have to roll thru all of the cycles again. I appreciate the energy savings; however, these newer units are inferior to yesterday's models. Whirlpool made very good products in the 70s. Btw, do you have a collection of washers & dryers that you plan on shooting a vid about? Finally, have been reading your website. Beautifully written. Very pleasant read. Will try to catch your music program on Saturdays. Enjoy your vids. Hello to Ralph. God bless.

Hobart USED to own KitchenAid, have not for many years now, I forget when they divested of it but it's been a while. It's now part of Whirlpool, who also owns Maytag, Roper, I forget who else, GE I think is still a separate entity, not certain about Speed Queen (though they do washers and dryers) and not certain about Westinghouse (or White Westinghouse as it's known today). Anyway, I have a later model KitchanAid, from 2015 and while basic, as the stainless steel tub but a basic model, bereft of fancy features, besides heavy/normal wash, rise and hold (though they no longer call it that) for wash cycles and a sani wash and no heat dry option, that's it. Gets the job done, takes roughly 90 minutes for a normal wash, longer for heavy loads.
