Vintage Appliances: Toast-O-Lator Luxury Toaster

Here's a look at a Toast-O-Lator "Luxury Toaster" or sometimes also billed at the "Aristocrat of Toasters." This design uses a track to carry the toast from one end to the other, and as the toast passes the electric coils, it toasts. The faster the track moves the lighter the toast, the slower it moves the darker the toast. A unique way to toasting bread, this special vintage toaster was a recent gift to the Cavalcade collection from friends Utz and Shirley - thank you so much!!

Nice find, or gift rather. Very cool. I did a quick search and it apparently went on the market around 1939, but may have been in production through at least the late 40's, if not into the 50's, most likely to the early 50's. I used to have my parents old Toastmaster toaster from 1954 when they got married, I think it was a wedding present and it had a solenoid to raise/lower the bread automatically so when you put the bread in on one side, it would automatically lower, when done, it's smoothly rise up, even when you pressed the temp control in to cancel. I later replaced it with a wide slot toaster for bagels etc from Farberware with a red plastic housing cover. It lasted for quite a while until the element went, by that point, it was unevenly faded from the sun.

I have only recently found this channel. Growing up in the 70-80s I always loved things from the 50s and before. I was always amazed that 30+ year old appliances and electronic items were still sound enough to be re-sold at antique stores for yet another owner. And they’re still being re-sold in working order. Thank you for re-creating the innocent age of a bygone era in a modern world that is hectic and often less colorful and interesting. I have enjoyed watching your back episodes. I have never heard of this toaster, and was very excited to see a video on it. I’m guessing it didn’t catch on because of having to wait to toast each slice individually, but that might just be my modern world influence of everything needing to be faster! What a wonderful collection you have! Congratulation on 400 episodes. I look forward to 400 more! Also I’m in awe of your cursive with a piece of chalk!

I have a Sunbeam Radiant Control toaster! Its not working at the moment, so I bought a different vintage toaster at a flea market. I used the Sunbeam for many years, I think it just needs some kind of adjustment, but I haven’t figured it out yet. Old toasters are SO much better than newer ones!

Happy 400th Guys! Neat toaster, but I think I can see why it didn't take off, considering it was one slice at a time! I'll have to go back and check out the other toaster vid. My grandmother had one of those that the sides opened to load the bread, which seemed cool to me as a kid! (that was late 60's, but I'm sure the toaster was old then). I remember wondering as a kid why everything at an old person's house was old too, but back then applainces were built to last a lifetime! Wish they still were! Amusing sidenote: my very frugal aunt had to get a new fridge last year! She's 95. She had been using the same fridge since she and my uncle set up house in 1951, so that fridge was 71!

What a wonderful gift for you Kevin. I must admit I had to hit pause and go and make myself toast in my 1950's General Mills toaster! I have my grandfather's 1940's Sunbeam toaster also. The little light on the Sunbeam has always lancinated my children and now, my grandchildren. Over the years, I have received newer model toasters, but I found other homes for them, as nothing toasts the bread to my liking like the old ones! They both still work GREAT and look like new! I love that toast- o - later though! Rye toast is my favorite! Congratulations Kevin & Ralph on your 400 wonderful episodes!

Congratulations on 400 episodes! That dish you used to catch the toast is Blue Ridge Pottery in the Fruit Fantasy pattern. I have a whole set in that pattern. One of my favorites and very colorful. Rye toast is great to use for club sandwiches. I've never seen a Toast-O-Lator in action, so thanks for the demo. My mom got a "pop-down" toaster as a wedding present in 1951. It's very tall. They used it for a few years and then got a GE toaster that worked better.

I found this site when I went looking for a photo of this toaster, which I grew up with. It was a wedding gift to my parents in 1947. My brother and I used to watch the toast crawl along through the porthole; we'd move the toaster to the edge of the table so the toast would fall on the floor. That way, we could toast another piece and the show would continue. I have ours. I haven't used it in years, since its cord is frayed and I need to find someone to lovingly replace it. How lovely to see it in action again!

Happy 400th episode!! Could you run more than one piece of bread at a time? The Henry Ford museum in theircollection has a 1939 toast-o-lator. For those not familiar with The Henry Ford Museum and Greenfield Village are in Dearborn Michigan.

Thanks, trainships. The Henry Ford Museum has an amazing collection of toasters and other old appliances - and lot of other things. It's an amazing place!

Wow, 400! Awesome. Toaster is amazing. I could imagine people putting their hands in the two side slots, to move the toaster and forgot it was still hot. Possible reason for the design not catching on.

Congrats on your 400th!!! And all best for many more to come :) What a great gift! I was wondering what the "0-Later" means? Appears to run similar to an escalator?😊

Hi Victoria - I'm not sure. The word "lator" is a Latin word but it refers to someone who proposes laws (like in legislator). Thanks!

Hi RF - yes, that Sunbeam Radiant Control is another very neat toaster. Thanks!

While interesting, it seems slow because it only does one slice at a time. I had the Sunbeam one which belonged to my husband's Aunt. Bought in 52. We inherited it around 84 and used it well into the 2000s. Had 2 children. Was not fixable. Many large families in the 50s and 60s had 4 slice toasters. I have a vague memory of someone having a 6 slice toaster. Would not say for sure.

👏 congrats!🎉 love your fountain of vintage kitchen info. We look forward to many more.. Tring to think of a different topic. But you cover all of them. But I do notice that your not interested in gas stoves. I am, but to each their own!😊

Thanks so much, Don! I only collect electric stoves - I have no gas lines in my kitchens!

It would kinda be a nightmare for Kevin to rotate gas stoves around for display, with all that's involved in hooking them up, but I love gas stoves too. I had a propane tank where I lived before here, and I ran a little gas stove on it, but when we bought this place, it came with a nice electric range. I still fantasize about switching, but so many other projects are higher on the list!

Wow 400 episodes, who knew? Being a toaster fan, that is too cool for school! However, I did see one once that had kind of a similar concept with the conveyor. It toasted only on one side, and when it came to the end of the conveyor the toast flipped, and went down the conveyor and toasted the other side. That one I think they said was from the early 30s. I'm curious what year yours is from? I would guess early post WWII, but who knows?

Hi Scooter! The one you saw sounds like it might be an earlier version of this one. I'm pretty sure this is from after the war, around the late 40's. Thanks!

When your bread gets stale, just run it through the toaster.

From the days when people had enough common sense to unplug it, before getting to the "guts" -now they would have a million safety cutouts and a microchip or two in there 😞

Actually, there isn't even a way to get inside most modern toasters. They are not meant to be repaired or taken apart - just thrown away.
