Vintage Bench Grinder Restoration [1974 Bench Grinder]

1974 bench grinder from Japan, In this videos I recorded it step by step the process of grinder restoration.

just a side note..... you need to hit the impact driver with a hammer for it to loosen the screws. Really nice job on the grinder.

Bob Ferranti I too noticed that, I had a mental image of it stabbing him in the palm of his other hand the way he was using it. I used to know someone who had limited movement of his fingers from doing that, his scar looked like the Stigmata.

Great work, but please ensure the ground wired to have proper contact with bare metal. Paint does not conduct electricity and will not safe your life ;-)

I think you did a Great job it looks great! For metal parts that have rust in tight to reach places I’ve seen people use different kinds of things to bathe the parts in. Vinegar, some acids, or even some commercial products do a great job of it. Electrolysis is a little harder to do but lots of fun

A nice looking restoration. A few suggestions if I may: 1 - On something that rusty, use a rust converter before primer. There will always be some left, and a converter will help. 2 - Did you do a wet sand before the final paint? It can help with products that old to get a smoother finish. If you were wanting to keep the old pitted look, then disregard. 3 - I wouldn't of painted the supports the same color as the shields. Personally I'd want them to stand out and not blend in. Go fun and do a neon color or something.

I agree. And the original green color would have been much better as well. BTW in the previous bench grinder restoration video was the same with the bearings. But great job!

Agreed with those bearings, it's horrible to fix something and then have to take it apart because a bearing goes bad in a week.

The bearings were fine - no noise and they rolled freely when he spinned the end cap. It was sealed bearings, and I think they had been replaced before.

Yes, I would had put new ball bearings in it. But then a friend of mine used to have a Fairbanks-Morse ball-bearing motor from the 1930s which ran as quietly as the day it was new.

That rust you didn't remove will keep eating the metal. If you wash the parts before paint stripper it will work better and you have to use less. Also i think you should look into removing rust with a bath so the rust is removed where you can't get with your tools

Я вот смотрю и поражаюсь всем этим реставратарам. Просто красят, без понимания процесса. Никакой защиты от коррозии в будущем, просто грунт, без кислотника. Никакого исправления поверхности от былых очагов коррозии, просто покрасили и готово. Внутреннюю поверхность корпуса не очистил, ни внутри корпуса двигателя, ни внутри основания. А подшипники поменяли, похоже что нет. Заземление прикрутил на окрашенную поверхность. Камни поставил два одинаковых. Просмотров много, а вот лайков маловато.

С заземлением все в порядке. Есть плотный контакт с болтом, а у болта есть контакт с корпусом. Насчет подшипников, видимо данный реставратор смотрит по потребности, так как есть видео где он меняет их. А вот по окраске, ничего сказать не могу.

Water sand between coats - that will get you a smooth finish on top coat. You would have dealt with the rust underneath and coated that for longevity. Someone mentioned the wiring - 2-prong in Japan does not help that. So your grounding is the best under the circumstances. Good work man - keep it up

Awesome. You just fixed the most important tool in a clean it up and make it look nice shop. Take that paint to the next level by using a high build primer, wet sanding THEN painting. It'll smooth it all out and make it look like a restored hot rod. Keep going man!

Renovation? Ok good repainting anyway. The motor compartment wasn't derusted, repainted or secured. The motor was remarkably clean inside and seems to work without cole pins.

Looks nice when done, but there were a couple misses here. The metal pieces with the sets screws on the outside of the wheels are balancers. They are not meant to just be aligned opposite each other, there is a process by which the wheels are balanced. Probably not critical on a small grinder like this, but when balanced the wheels will last longer, the bearings will last longer, and the finish on what you are grinding will be better. Looking at the way the shaft nut fits, I would guess those wheel balancers are not original, the shaft doesn't look long enough to get complete nut engagement with them there. If you aren't going use them to balance the wheel you would be better off just replacing them with a properly sized flange washer. -edit- Here is a similar balancer available new: oneway.ca/products-category/sharpening-grinding-jigs/Balancing%20Systems -end edit- The left side wheel, which was centered by banging with a chunk of wood, that needs the proper sized bushing so it can't be moved that way. As it is that is a grenade just waiting to go off, and yes a little grinder like that has the potential to kill. And finally, your wheels look to be an inch too small. That said, good job. You saved it before the screws rusted so much they broke off, and it looks nice. To the people worrying about the rust inside the base, that is cast iron, surface rusted cast iron is stable and the rust won't grow noticeably if the grinder is kept inside. The ground is a good idea, but I would have just replaced the cord with a 3 wire with a grounded plug, and put the ground screw inside the base, one less wire to catch on things when working around the grinder.

I don't feel like I'm sacrificing any rpms or power for the quietness either. All in all it's a very nice machine. No vibration whatsoever.
