I have always thought this idea was so cool, mounting old lenses on the cameras we have today. Cool stuff!
@MarkHoltze
@MarkHoltze 6 жыл бұрын
Definitely. Especially if you have a few old ones laying around the house left over from parents or grandparents. What got me into it specifically was wanting to take portraits of my family with lenses my grandfather used to take pictures of my dad and uncles. Same lens, different cameras, different people. There is something beautifully cyclical about the thought of that. It quickly became more than that given the quality these lenses render. Especially for video. Once you experience fast prime lenses, it's hard to go back to slow zooms when you realize all the interesting things you can do with the speed.

You CAN remove the 'correction' glass inside the adapter (it requires that you 'pinch' your thumb and a finger directly on the glass, and then rotate the adaptor -- Fotodiox has made a video on this, which is either on KZbin, or on their website). Why would you remove glass? For 'macro' or extreme closeup only, as you will not only lose infinity focus; the maximum focus distance will be down to inches or so (depending on the lens mounted). But, the image will be much sharper and cleaner. I am using the adapter without correction glass, on a Canon FL 50mm f/3.5 macro lens, mounted to an FL bellows with slide duplicator -- for copying 35mm film slides to digital, using an EF mount camera.

When using this FD to EOS style of adapter with the optical element it is best to stop down to at least f11 on your lens (actually f8 for metering due to light loss from adapter's optical element). Shooting wide open using these adapters can give a soft focus fog filter halation effect - (not that there is anything wrong with that if it is your thing ....). Both Novoflex and MTF have now produced hi end FD to EOS-R adapters - Cheap Chinese copies to follow in 2019 for sure.

The older fd manual focus has less glass thus giving better micro-contrast in film. That's why I like them.

Canon FD's are not the best for adapting on Canon because of that glass element. Vintage Nikkor, Pentak K, and M42 lenses will give you a crisp image.
@MarkHoltze
@MarkHoltze 6 жыл бұрын
Ya, I've heard that actually, which is why I wanted to test it out myself. Unfortunately I need a bit cleaner day to really get a sense of clarity. The FD lens on my Sony A7SII is crystal clear, but most of those shots were taken on days with much less low pressure ;). I think you need that glass element on the adapter to allow for infinity focus? The lens is removable so I'm going to attempt some contrast and comparison shots when I take it out. Thanks for your comment Nate! Appreciate it!

Mark Holtze Yes I think it’s due to the flange distance, which is why mirrorless without the glass element will give a better image.

Yes, anytime you put glass between a sensor and a lens is not great IMHO. Also want to run some tests on how it performs on the CINE cameras. I know a DP who's CSC and just got a set of unopened FD lenses from 20-135 from Syria who's adapting them for use in commercials/films. It's pretty cool actually, don't know how a set of FD lenses that old stays in unopened boxes for decades but I wouldn't have believed it had I not seen the images.

If you think about it, its not much different than putting a teleconverter on there, just in the opposite direction. It would probably be something like a .8 times converter (speed booster). We just need Canon to make the glass so its of a quality similar to the glass in the lens.
@MarkHoltze
@MarkHoltze 6 жыл бұрын
Yes for sure! Glass quality is really the crux in my above statement. Glass quality solid than no issues in my mind really. Always shooting video with ND filters so glass will always be in front of lens to some degree. Great point though, thanks for the comment!

Awesome review Mark. I have the same adapter and I agree, it’s a solid unit. I don’t know about your full-frame, but on my APSC Canon you can pull the little lens out and it becomes a macro tube (but you lose infinity).
@MarkHoltze
@MarkHoltze 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Tim, thanks so much! I think full frame is crop 1.4 x the Focal length, if you have an APSC you do 1.4 x focal length x crop factor for that camera to get the ACTUAL recorded focal length....but I could be wrong. So the glass, is that necessary for only FD lenses do you know? Or is that something all DSLR's require? I'm new to using them with DSLR's which is why I'm asking. My Sony adapters (mirrorless) don't have anything to them other than a mount, which works cause there's nothing between the lens and the sensor. Really love the smooth aperture option though on this one though. Looking forward to more tests!

Mark Holtze Hey Mark, sorry, I didn’t get a notification on your reply. Yes, the little lens is necessary for FD to EOS and also Minolta to EOS because the optimal flange distance is closer than Canon EOS. Without the lens you lose infinity focus but you gain minimum focus distance. No optics required with M42, Pentax, Olympus and Tamron adapters for EOS because the required flange distance is greater than that of EOS. Not a problem on mirrorless either.

Using FD lenses with a Fotasy FD to EF-M adapter works very nicely with my M3 and M6 mirrorless bodies, but you do still have the crop factor. I get very good results using focus peaking, and the all manual mode is a nice change of pace. I'm looking forward to Canon coming out with a full frame mirrorless body that can be adapted for FD lenses, and that I can hopefully afford. I still might try the Fotodiox on my 6D MkII body to compare results.

The quality you will see for yourself. A lot of what we see out there is trying to sell you new gear. Affiliate links, camera makers winning you over by stats. It’s all good but is unsustainable for most. The FD L series lenses are unbelievable. Way more expensive than the StandRd FD, but I put a vintage 50 L 1.2 on my camera at a recent camera show and was blown away. I wanted it, but guy wanted $500 for it (Canadian). Not terrible, but I was looking for the 135 and didn’t want to blow the wad on another 50. Optically, the bokeh the short min focus distance, the focus ring all of it was pure gold. It still hurts me a bit when I think about it.

Question on FD lens to EOS camera. Sensor = APS-C = crop factor 1.6 , FD to EF adaptor = crop factor 1.25 . It was recommended that a 85mm 1.8 lens is good for portraits. So with my Canon SL2 if I used a vintage FD lens would I use FD 85mm or would I start with something like. 40mm and use the crop factor to be around 85mm after factoring in the crop factor.
@MarkHoltze
@MarkHoltze 4 жыл бұрын
A 50mm would probably be a good 85 equivalent. 40mm would be hard to find in an FD I suspect. 50 would be close enough to get that 85 look on an APS-C. Portrait work on a FF 60mm-135mm are good, so if you're in that range, you're golden.

I wish I had the money to get an R5, or R6, but I don't think that's going to happen anytime soon. I kinda hope the R comes down in price again after the 2 new cameras come out, maybe I can pick one of those up in the next year? If I do get a mirror less, (R or M either one) I'm going to get the adapters for using both EF, and FD lenses!!

Curious to know. During all your shopping for these old lens, how often do you come across ones that are completely unusable? Either because of scratches in the glass, or a broken body (focus ring, etc..).
@MarkHoltze
@MarkHoltze 6 жыл бұрын
Hey Blake! Actually if someone is selling a lens than it's almost always in good shape. Depends where you are buying of course. I haven't picked up anything from garage sales, but people often buy these lenes for like $5 if you can find them. Hit and miss with them as the people selling them probably just want to get rid of them and might not know the actual value of them item. Trade shows the lenses are in PRIME shape, I suspect people buy and do the tune up work themselves and sell for a small profit. Generally though from what I've seen is that lenses are almost all in great shape. I haven't purchased anything off Ebay so can't speak to that, I like to mount and test out the lenses before I buy anything. How a lens feels/focus ring etc is all very important to me not to mention the image quality it produces. :)

Is there any advantage to changing the aperture with the adapter as opposed to changing it on the lens? Will the camera sensor read what aperture it's on, possibly?
@MarkHoltze
@MarkHoltze 6 жыл бұрын
Hi John, there really is no advantage changing the aperture on the adapter vs the lens. You can still change thee exposure on the lens just to be clear. The adapter option simply de-clicks the aperture so you get a smooth opening and closing of the aperture. Your camera won't detect what aperture your set on regardless as there is no communication between the lens and the camera. You know and your light meter will read it properly, but the camera won't know. Having a smooth aperture motion is more necessary in video shooting/film. T-stops are what they're called on cine lenses and a big difference between cinema lenses vs photographic ones is that smooth transition between stops. When shooting video and moving from inside to outside while shooting you'll notice ugly hard stops down as you bring the F-stop down, on cine lenses it's gradual, almost looks like a fade so you can continue shooting and many films do this while maintaining the shot. But long answer long, no advantage whatsoever really for photography.

"faster prime lenses" as this 2.8 becomes 4.0 with the adapter Proper EF conversion kits are over $100 (and semi permanent) which is why no one outside of the cine industry really adapts FD to EF. Luckily there are many other choices besides FD for adapting to EF cheaply (and effectively.)

@MarkHoltze
@MarkHoltze 5 жыл бұрын
I'd be nicer to NOT have the lens on the filter, but it's necessary for the DSLR to get infinite focus with the FD lens.I don't think you'll get blurry, you might get hazy, but you can pull that down in LR and play with that element in creative ways. The Blurry part is going to be just landing focus. Shooting 1.4 wide open the focus point will be razor thin. Practice makes perfect with manual focusing on DLRS's. You can do it, i know you can ;). I would get the adapter and see how it works. You could always return if if you hate it. But even stopped down you basically have a free lens that is worth real money on the vintage market. Hold on it it and watch in 3 years as the price goes up with all the mirrorless cameras coming to market (although I would never sell it, i just like knowing the $$$ sometimes). Fotodiox Pro is probably your best bet, I can't speak to other adapters but I use the pro on my DSLR's like this one and get a smudge of hazing wide open, the pictures as seen in the video aren't all blurry. That said, if you ever go mirrorless, that's where these lenses really shine. The EVF makes everything so much easier (focus peaking, focus zoom) and seeing exactly how the picture will turn out when you click the shutter takes a lot of the guess work out of it. You also don't need an additional lens on the adapter to get infinity focus. I use my Sony Mirrorless for most of my video/photo vintage stuff. I sprung for the camera because I knew I didn't have to spring for a whole new lens ecosystem....all my vintage lenses now don't equal to what I paid for my one Canon 24mm 1.4 :) Hope that helps mate
@RememberNineEleven
@RememberNineEleven 5 жыл бұрын
Also when you use this adapter you will lose a stop of light - the f1.4 will be an effective f2.5 (usually rounded up to f2.8). A 50mm becomes around a 64mm on a Full Frame camera as well. The lens element in the adapter is an extra piece of glass not part of the lens design and is not sharp at low apertures. Becomes moderately sharp at f8 to f16.

Thanks for the video!! Do you know if can I use this to hook up my Canon FD 50mm f1.4 to my Canon EOS 6D?
@MarkHoltze
@MarkHoltze 5 жыл бұрын
You can yes. You need to get the "pro" one that has the lens so that the FD can infinity focus. For some reason Canon FD lenses don't marry well with Canon DSLR systems. Mirrorless line brings them back around, but it's got to do with the flange distance on canon DSLR's. The problem with the glass is that it muddies up the image a bit wide open (not super sharp as you can tell from this video) and there is a small crop. Other problem I find with Canon DSLR's like the 6DII (I have) is that it's tough to manual focus through the rangefinder seeing as the aren't any split prism or manual focusing aids. Still manageable, but a little tricky. Using the LCD for wide open sharp focusing is way more helpful as you can do focus zoom. It works though, just need a bit more practice, but if you work through that you can get some amazing images.

@MarkHoltze
@MarkHoltze 4 жыл бұрын
Bokeh will get slightly affected because it’s cropping in a bit and impacting a small fraction of the light. Very hard to notice to be honest. Most wouldn’t even see the difference. The biggest impact is on the wide open performance of the lens. It’s a bit hazier if that makes sense. You can still get some great bokeh based on your subject and background distance from Camera

It varies, it’s not ideal but to get around it just don’t use FD lenses on DSLR EF mounts. M42 lenses like Takumars and the I famous Helios just take a simple M42 screw adapter with no glass elements to corrupt the image. you can focus from the viewfinder not bad, the thing with modern DSLR's is they never intended you to be able to focus manually so compared to SLR's that had split prism etc, it's much harder. The digital viewfinder on the back is a bit better, at least you can focus zoom or use peaking. But ultimately yes, the glass element in the adapter corrects the flange distance issue you have with DSLR's and canon FD lenses.

Hello Mark and thanks a million for a terrific and comprehensive video. I would like to purchase a Vivitar Series 1 70~210mm Lens with a Canon FD Mount. My question is, will I be able to use this lens on my Canon EOS 80D body? Will the adaptor create any issues as far as image quality and focusing distance? Again, many thanks for your assistance. :) Tony
@MarkHoltze
@MarkHoltze 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks Tony! Yes you can use it on your 80D. There will be a natural crop factor of the zoom because the zoom lens is a full frame, so you just have to convert into APS-C sensor size which is about a factor of 1.53 I think. So take 70 x 1.53 = 107-306mm on your crop. The lens adapter adds an additional 0.7 crop and will impact the light by like 1/3rd of a stop. It's KIND of annoying, but it's how the Canon DSLR's are built. If you ever get a full frame Canon R camera then the vivitar lens will be able to be adapted with just an FD to ER mount (no glass) and it's full frame so the focal length will be 1:1. The glass is in there so you can obtain infinity focus on the EOS DSLR mount from an FD lens. There are a number of M42 mount lenses (Takumar, Helios) that can adapt nicely to the DSLR format without having the lens. It's that darn FD mount on the EOS DSLR that causes problem. Regardless, work within it's limitations and it shouldn't hold you back from being able to get some great shots with it!

What matters most is knowing what the lens mount is of the lens you want to adapt. SMC Takumar, Helios and Pentacon for example are all M42 mounts. So you need an M42 to EOS adapter. Canon FD lenses use FD mounts, so an FD to EOS adapter is required. Note FD lenses on Canon DSLR's need to have a glass element inside the adapter (like the one I tested on this one) otherwise you won't be able to achieve infinity focus. If you have an eye on a lens, let me know and I'll help walk you through the more specifics.

Crop just makes it so you have to multiply the focal length by 1.5/1.6. I wouldn’t say ruined. Lots of people shoot vintage on a crop sensor. Part of my lens reviews I just stated was showing the aps-c sensor examples. I know gh5 users using them as well. Just have to go super wise to get a normal wide. But getting an 85mm equivalent focal length with a 50 (cheap and common) on a crop is less costly than buying an 85 for a FF which are all super expensive. Even vintage. Plus my c100 is super 35mm so is technically a crop as well and still works fine. Have you tried personally?

@swistedfilms
@swistedfilms 5 жыл бұрын
What you can do is set the camera to Aperture Priority. When you're in an uncontrolled environment (e.g., outdoors where the lighting can change quickly and drastically) then this mode (or Shutter Priority) is usually better than Manual mode anyway. When you're in AP the camera will meter the shot and set everything else according to that, so it doesn't really care what the shutter reading is; it's only concerned about the metering it's reading. You can't set it in Shutter Priority though because it won't be able to control the aperture, but you might be able to set it to Automatic. One thing though: you might need to set your camera to back button focus. If the camera can't find focus then it won't take the shot. Back button focus separates the two functions and allows you to get focus and then take the shot. If you're not already using back button focus then you should give it a try. It's incredibly useful, especially for sports and any situation where you need constant focus, as well as for focusing and recomposing. It takes some getting used to but once you've learned it you'll probably love it!

I managed to buy the lenses however for me to get the right shots from it I need to be about a half meter away of the subject.. i can work on my shudder speed which helps make it clearer a bit but I don’t know why I can’t be further away from the subject.. any tips would be great.. I’m feeling like all I can do is macro shots for bugs or something.

@@kelly___lopez It doesn't work for the new R? That's so weird! What adapter are you using? Honestly the R I thought would be a great replacement for my 6DII but....no pictures with vintage? I thought it was going to reunite native FD to Canon after decades of needing a glass element adapter for infinity focus. So it just won't take the picture? I wonder if there's like an override or something.

Mark Holtze it won’t take photos without a lens on it so I don’t think it is reading that the lens adapter is a lens so it’s just disabling the shutter button as if it doesn’t have a lens attached. I may just need a different adapter

I just bought a 35-70 f/2.8-3.5 Canon FD lens. I'm going to put it on my 5DS-R when it gets here and see what happens. I would've just bought a Sigma 24-70 Art series for the camera that I already have but it wasn't my fault that I bought the 5DS-R instead! Honestly, I thought someone would outbid me at $2,000 for it! But it didn't happen, and once you make the bid you can't retract it, so I had to buy it! I'm just glad I showed some restraint and didn't buy a Petzval to go with it!

@MarkHoltze 5 жыл бұрын
The Sigma art lens is a good lens, I think you will enjoy that! You could always sell it back for what you paid for it if you regret it. Keep the packaging and stuffing on hand just in case. Makes reselling super easy ;). Let me know how you like the FD 35-70, curious to know how it performs.

It should be. Might take a bit more practice to get consistent with it, DSLR’s and vintage lenses aren’t as easy as mirrorless. Being able to focus zoom and use focus peaking (coloured outline around the in focus part of the frame) made possible with EVF (electronic view finders) is super easy. Regardless hold onto your FD, with canon and Nikon now in the mirrorless game, these lenses will only increase in value in the next few years. You should look at some fast prime lenses like Helios 44m 58mm F2...cheap as chips and really cool swirly bokeh around the edges.
@swistedfilms
@swistedfilms 5 жыл бұрын
I went on a vintage lens buying spree! I just won the Helios you suggested, and it even included the adapter, so that's cool. I got a 70-210 f/4 Canon with a brass finish for $20, shipping included! I'm currently bidding on a Quantaray Macro 85-210 f/3.8. We'll see if I win it. If I do then I'll have gotten a 35-70, 70-210, 50MM f/2, and an 85-210 macro for about $180, including shipping! That's a pretty complete vintage lens stable right there, and according to the sellers they're all in mint condition! I did find some information on the 70-210 f/4. It's just okay, not great, though apparently it gets better when you stop down the aperture, which I'll probably be able to do with no problem considering I'll probably use it in broad daylight most of the time. I wasn't able to find any information on the 35-70 f/2.8; when I get it I should probably make a video because either I've got a pretty rare lens and I should share my fortune or there are others who have it too and would want to know what it's all about. It should be interesting to see what happens when I pair these with the 5DS-R I just got.

@@MarkHoltze The Canon FD 35-70 mm zoom is a good lens, which covers the most useful range of focal lengths with a reasonable maximum aperture. The image quality is good. It often came as a kit lens with cameras such as the T50 and T70, and thus is a very common lens. This also means it is very cheap to buy second-hand (e.g. under $20 and $30 max.) In fact, you may even end up with a free camera attached to the lens! :-) A nice feature of this lens is that it includes macro capability, and is able to focus down to about 30 cm. I think its success is that it does not try to do too much. I recommend you get one; I have three of them.

Oh sorry mate, I thought this was a follow up question to FF to CROP. The crop on this 1.21x. I'm so sorry. The 1.53 was a FF lens on a CROP frame, two very similar questions happened at the exact same time. So a 50 on this would be a 60.

@@Adomarf What camera and lens are you adapting? DSLR's won't infinity focus without a little lens element adapter. If you're on a mirrorless you don't have to worry so any adapter should work. FD to EOS specifically won't work because of focal distance on the lens and the mirror/sensor on the camera. it sucks, but that's the way it is unfortunately. You have to deal with a bit of the crop. You could look at speed boosters, but they're pretty expensive.

If you get one without glass it becomes a small extension tube. A extension tube is a cheap way of making your lens macro. So if you buy one without glass than the FD lens will not be able to focus to infinity. The lens lets you to infinity.

@@ezrachristi9222without the glass on the lens adapter, will that remove the 2x crop factor? Because on aps-c lens it's already a 1.4 crop factor Correct me if I'm wrong, example if you got a 50 mm f/1.4 lens with a lens adapter, it's 2x crop factor, and then a 1.4 crop factor on aps-c camera body, so your looking at about 140 mm, with the glass lens adapter? With a glassless lens adapter, that'll all change?
