This video was really comforting to see. I shoot on a vintage Nikkor glass set (24-180mm) from the 1960-70's almost exclusively, my 105mm being my favorite portrait lens of all time. The lenses were my dad's when he was in college and as I started out at MICA, he gave them to me. Currently I'm shooting with the lenses on a ZCam E2 with a Metabones M4/3-F mount adapter, with an added Black Promist 1 when I need a dramatic highlight blur.

Hey Spenser, is that 24mm FD you have the one with the S.S.C written on it or is that the later iteration of it that does not have that written on it ?

Late to the party but I’ve been shooting video with a GH2 paired with a 35-70mm Canon FD and a 16D anamorphic. I love the look and feel of this combination although I have to zoom in completely for the image to fill the sensor therefore the 85mm prime is the more practical choice. I have a few video examples that i shot using the setup mentioned on my KZbin page if you wanna check them out...

I love shooting with my set of vintage lenses. I have a metric sh*tload of old GDR-produced M42 mount lenses that I use for video _and_ photography. They just look awesome. And they're all primes, which have themselves a very different look to them than zoom lenses. Not something for your everyday work, but for the right occasion, they're the cherry on the cake.

Vivitar made some great lenses too! If the 1.4 and 1.2 lenses are too expensive, there are plenty of comparable Vivitar copies. They're just not as fast, but lenses in the f1.8 to f3.5 range are very useable for photos and video. My favorite lens of all time is the Tokina (under Vivitar) 35-105mm f3.5. It has this amazing macro ring that lets you dial in your macro focus and it only cost me 40 bucks.

This was super interesting. I wonder what the difference would be between buying a metabones versus (potentially) harming the resale value of a vintage lens by converting it to EF. Or hey, maybe the latter would actually be worth more for then it wouldn't have to be converted! Thanks for going into so much detail here.

@@spensersakurai That's super rad. It's guys like you and him that I'd love to grab a coffee with and just talk through your process. Not to knock on anybody, but there's so many *hype* cinematography channels on KZbin dedicated to getting the "cinematic" look through LUTs and workarounds. It's refreshing to find someone who sees the value in slowing things down, and really considering how to get a beautiful image without slapping a $10 teal/orange LUT onto a timeline with photoshopped 2.35:1 bars and crazy transitions. For what it's worth, you've definitely gained a fan. 🤙

I would add that many lenses need some kind of additional friction if you de click them to avoid the aperture moving around. You can use a small amount of lithium grease but other lenses need an actual shim or they will really slide all over the place. Also your wobble on the 24mm is due to the nylon spacer rings degrading. You can get them replaced and it will stop.

You SHOULD have mentioned that you CAN'T adapt an FD or FL lens for a Canon DSLR. The FFDistance is 2mm shorter on Canon FD lenses, and you'd end up scratching or breaking the mirror of your camera. The only problem with the vintage lenses, is that they're not wide-enough (the 24mm here is quite rare, as you said). For action, or modern filmmaking, you need really wide, and back then, they didn't know how to make them wide and fast at the same time. Other than that, vintage lenses are much nicer than modern clinical lenses.

I'm a filmmaker from Malta, I actually co-own a production house over here, and you have managed to convince me to make a switch from the Canon eco-system to the Blackmagic one. I mainly shoot commercial advertisements and am currently looking into buying myself a BMPCC 6K. What do you think of this to be my A cam for my gigs? Much much love, man!

I haven’t directly shot with the 6k yet but from what I can tell and knowing the pocket 4k, I think it’s a great camera for commercial projects. For the price, you should have zero complaints. The color science seems better than the 4k as well.

I’m using M42 Takumars on an L mount fp with the Novoflex adapter, in addition to other old glass. The 35 f2 and 85 f1.9 are OUTSTANDING, and still going for around the same prices I paid 10 years ago, 300 bucks, if I recall correctly. We have this psychological resistance to paying so much money for such an old manual lens, but we shouldn’t. It’s the character of the GLASS we’re paying for, not autofocus, because so many of us do MF anyway.

Very well done dude, i recently got a canon m50 and my first course of action was buying an FD 50mm 1.4 lens and an adapter. Fuck that kit lens lmao, this suuuuch an upgrade! Also got a tokina 28mm 2.8 for next to nothing, FD is where its at when money is tight 😎

I'd also love to get my hands on some faster wide angle glass but it does get way more expensive than 50s :(

What about lens breathing when you pull focus. How much re-framing do you find yourself doing when using these for filming?

Is it possible to have a reference site ?? Thanks for your work, vintage lenses will soon become a must! Greetings from Italy Simone

cool video. I didn't know about the shape ways thing. I may have to try that out. Just a note though, the regular 55 1.2 is still pretty cheap on eBay, but if you actually look for the aspherical version, the price is significantly more. Ive read the 24, 55, and 85 aspherical were the ones the k35s were similar to...and all of those are pretty expensive to buy. of course less than a k35 and still a good investment, just saying. Vintage lenses are the shiz tho. Love them

Yea I was a little confused too caus he's talking about the cheap $2-300 FDs, but he's holding an aspherical one. If only they were as easy to find / cheap!

Question: I've been wanting to declick my FD lens for a while (NFD 50 f1.4 and 100 f2.8). If you declick them without the "damping grease" will it create problems or do you think it's not necessary?

I have a 28mm m42 lens from Pentax and I love it but how can I measure the filter screw on diameter for the step-up rings? Also how can I decide which seamless gear size to get? Love to know your tips.
@spensersakurai
@spensersakurai 4 жыл бұрын
There should be a marking for the filter screw on the lens. And you need to measure yourself for the gear size since that was not a common spec.
