We've certainly come a long way in the last decade or so, but I'm grateful that I recorded any video at all of the trucks I watched around 2005 instead of taking only pictures. The video quality will be as much a trip down memory lane as I believe the content will. If nothing else, this is part of my own effort to preserve the trucks I remember watching in my youth, but I hope you also enjoy seeing some stuff I haven't yet uploaded anywhere. This is not the last of my library of EDCO and EDI truck footage filmed just North of San Diego, CA, but these are among the very oldest clips.

3 years later, these things are insanely vintage. I remember seeing these trucks, they were my childhood!

You really deserve a ton of credit for these clips! These were some of the first videos of garbage trucks that myself and many others got to watch many years ago now. These really helped pave the way for so many of us, so a huge thanks goes out to you. 3:26 is pretty iconic too. Very fitting that your first upload was an MSL imo. I also echo a similar sentiment to Andy’s comment about garbage day never quite being the same again. It really was trucks like these that got so many of us enthusiasts into this whole thing. They were loud, fast, simple, with tons of action easily visible, and honestly looked cooler. All things that are exciting to kids and the lack of them on new trucks is largely what I blame there being less new people interested in these trucks now. I digress, I thoroughly enjoyed this video and it was great to see all these clips again(or some for the first time?) While I didn’t grow up with these type of trucks personally, the amount of time spent watching them on KZbin makes them a bit nostalgic even to me. Do you have any idea how many MSL’s EDCO and their subsidiaries had running around 05’ish? Seem like there was an unending stream of combinations and hardly any were exactly the same.

Thanks bud. to be honest, I didn't realize you have been in the community so long, did you go by a different username back in the distant memories of '06-'08? you would say there are fewer people interested in trucks nowadays? a younger generation growing up with digital cameras and the internet in every household is why I have thought I'm noticing more people interested in and filming these trucks than before. but I will agree, and add that the sound isn't the same. newer trucks feature more efficient hydraulic pumps and even if a modern day truck sounds good to us, it's not necessary for it to rev up as high as these oldies. plus I think the pumps themselves sound different than before. 0:24 and 3:26 are the only two clips I've uploaded before, and I thought 15 years ago is long enough time that newer viewers haven't even seen those. my estimate for EDCO, which means San Diego County - ignoring Burrtec, is about 150 MSLs back in 2005. so you're right, it did seem like an unending variety of makes and models and I'm glad so many filtered through my neighborhood. even front loaders with a dumpster weren't uncommon, as noted in that very brief instance here. thank you for the comment and I appreciate your continued viewership.

A little late to comment, but can’t not comment on this one. Great work. So nice and refreshing to see some old footage of classic units like these. Definitely made me realize just how much has changed truck wise over the last 15 years. For a lot of these trucks (the MSLs in particular) it’s pretty clear that they were built to collect, and pack trash. Nothing more, nothing less. Simple square body with a hopper and a blade. Same deal with the chassis, so simple with nothing fancy like trucks today. Definitely miss seeing trucks built like that. Seems like everyone today is in a competition for who can make/sell the most technologically advanced trucks. On another note, can’t go without mentioning how amazingly loud those MSLs were. I bet you could hear those things from many blocks away. Ottawa Rouge sounded particularly nice imo. Seeing how the packer moved on these old trucks also makes you realize how slow new MSL blades are lol. Nice to see some footage of that Maxon FL as well. Great stuff!

Good stuff scott I felt like you were due for a Escondido video haha! Definitely enjoyed every second of this, no doubt the MSLs on greens are my favorite and have the most old school feel to them! Wish trucks were as loud as they once were, How loud the MSLs gets when the packer Cycles is something I’ll miss. Edco still runs a fair amount of good stuff down there these days but definitely nothing this good, really enjoyed this and appreciate your work that went into this finding old clips from so many years ago probably isn’t easy! Thanks for posting!!

thanks man the loudness was probably my favorite part. we lived at the top of a hill and you could hear the truck literally a mile away and sometimes see it if you knew where it was working and usually tell which truck it was. did you ever see manual side loaders growing up? or what'd you grow up with besides rapid rails?

This is absolutely astounding. I have no doubt that you have the most complete archive of pictures and footage of these 80’s model California style trucks. As strange as it sounds I think we can agree that the sights and sounds of trash collection will never be as beautiful as they were in those days. If only you were able to venture down south back then, who knows what kind of oddballs were running out of Federal and Armour in those days, not to mention all the other major sites. I know from an old contact that the front loader may have been the last Crane Carrier Mashburn bought before they became EDCO, if it was 43 yards (and it looks massive). I believe most if not all the Crane Carriers were from Mashburn. Also EDCO never had tag axles until they bought the McNeilus Ultras in 2014. What did you say to the drivers back then? Obviously the internet wasn’t what it is today, they must’ve had a pretty different reaction than most do now. It’s crazy to think about how this was so mundane to the people who were closest to it but we look at it like it’s something that belongs in a museum. I can’t wait for more!

that seems to be right about the Mashburn trucks, the one or two aerial pictures I've seen of a yard of theirs was full of Maxon Eagle MSLs on CCCs and I'm sure they bought some oddball bodies beside Maxon like that ABC/Bridgeport in the beginning here. I used a very basic film point and shoot camera for a solid year before my parents got a digital P&S camera, which is what I used to take most of these clips. so it wasn't obvious that it was a video instead of a picture, and I hardly got any videos of trucks before 2006. plus I liked to help a lot of drivers with what I could lift, so I guess that was how I broke the ice. thanks for the comment, glad you appreciate the throwback and have the same interest I do in the old days

Ah, listening to these beasts brings back so many memories, especially of the old trucks that serviced my area. Those MSL's were sure loud as hell (even though I had rear loaders doing my route up here in NorCal)! All those engines had their own unique sounds to them, especially those L10 Cummins engines (my all-time favorite, I might add). I sure remember that clip you posted of #51 on greens, would've been nice to see a full vid of that one with some long takeoffs mixed in there as well. It's truly amazing how far trucks have come in the last 15 years, my yard doesn't even have any L10 Cummins units left, which is just sad. I feel like it should be better if all these old gems still roamed the streets, because they were plain and simple, they got the job done and nothing more! I know you have tons more vintage clips of these trucks, so definitely looking forward to more of them!

Is the thumbnail a mack LE with 310 headlights or a newer model of a RTI chassis?

Neither one, it's an Ottawa Rogue. Ottawa made that chassis for only a couple years in the late 80s
