My old man got me one of these in 1969 for Xmas. Always wanted another one. Just won one on eBay today a day before my 56th birthday. Old man is long gone but great memories flooding back. Thanks for posting.

Funny you should say that Ron. I was given one as a gift from my uncle when he visited us in NJ in 1977. I was 10 and I ran that till I nearly wore it out. Fav toy. I’m a NASA engineer now and I was fascinated by the engines. I took delivery today of a Brand new, never run/fueled, in Red. I’m 54 now and I can’t stop looking at it. Even without being fueled I can almost smell the fuel and hearing it run in this video, I’m now back in my backyard, in 1977. Who says there’s no such thing as time travel. Now I’m waiting on another EBay purchase of a COX Action Van, all yellow, brand new as well. The guy I bought mine from Ron has other new ones also. I realize that this post is 5 yr old but thought I’d answer anyway.

Way years later I had an 049 centrifugal clutch RC Jerobee 2 channel radio I think it was a Dodge Challenger? I took the 2 channel radio control out of it and mounted it in the bodyless chassis of the Cox Dune Buggy. They used to make 049 planes that you wing around in a circle wide open. They used to run backwards just as well. I took the backwards running 049 prop motor and bolted it backwards on a thin wood block that was then bolted outside the engine cage on the back of the bodyless Cox. I hooked everything up and had RC steering and and throttle from the jerobee. The 049 was finally unimprisoned from the merciless jogging speed 18,000 rpm over run torture of it's life and we would follow the pneumatic knobby tired bodyless cox dune buggy chassis around the block in a car hitting speeds of 40 mph like a Florida everglades air boat but on land.

i had a cox buggy in 1975 & mine was running great like yours in the video, it was its first running, it ran for about 6 loops & sudenly stopped instantly, after dismanteling the engine i found that the counterweight on the crank broke off - acting like a drum break in the engine case, causing it to stop instantly, one of my sadest days of the 70s. Lol.

I added the 2 channel 27 mhz radio and one servo for throttle control on the exhaust sleeve, worked as planned. What you need for these small engines is care and patience. I have the tiny Cox .010, Pee Wee .020 and a handful of .049s mounted on airplanes. I enjoy flying my planes with these engines with no problem at all.

This is how we dreamed of having fun long before video games and 500 TV channels! Yeah, we often got cuts, scrapes and burns, fuel sprayed on our faces and all over our clothes, but we had real fun. We rode bikes everywhere, You hardly ever see kids riding any more, and i haven't heard a gas airplane in a park in ages. I guess some of us were lucky to grow up back then.
