I think that the crank arrangement is, as you speculate, to use the rim as the drag (anti-reverse released) similar to "palming" a fly reel. In addition to folding the crank out of the way, the length of the "lever" is increased when the handle is deployed radially, increasing the cranking power. Not sure how useful that was... I expect this didn't work out as well as the marketing guys thought it might, I have the same vintage Minicast silver version since the 1970's-Exactly the same with the exception of the premium gold colour and the elaborate handle. It works well , including the drag. I could imagine that using only the wheel as the drag might be fun as increasing the drag resistance with a fish on the line, with the silver version, is less than precise in a panic. 😂😀

I think your explanation is right on Seems more of a gimmick than something useful on such a small reel I love the portability of this setup but having to assemble it every time is a bit of a pain Thanks for your comments

My brother has one of those reels. I believe the wheel increases the gear ratio.

I'm not sure what you mean? Turn off the anti reverse and put pressure on the wheel?
