I'll never forget the sound of these trains accelerating. I'm glad some were saved and restored. I have never seen the line to the North Sydney rail sidings at Lavender Bay. Surely, one of the most scenic rail journeys of the Sydney rail network - and that's really saying something.

I miss the old red rattler. Loved the "grrrrrr" sound it made as it rolled out the station. Reminder of a simpler time.

Vintage???? These were some which I'd be catching in my school days. There were also a lot of Bradfield cars still around, draughty as the doors went straight into the seating compartment with no vestibules. And before anyone makes a comment, I'm not that old

With the faux English voice of the old films, "Welcome to sunny Sydney". When I was little in the late 60's, Dad would take us into town to the movies. Yeah, the movies were fun, but I couldn't wait for afterwards, next door. Downstairs at Hobbyco. Back when you could get everything down to scale nuts and bolts for your scale trains. Under the glass counter top were dozens of fine scale wheels, couplers, motors. Then there were the brass models !! BRASS!! The other memorable part of the day was boarding at Hurstville, hearing the growl of the traction motors with their accompanying ozone. The dim glow of the (what I thought were 20w bulbs) pearl shell lamp shades and the smell of the brakes in the tunnel to Town Hall. There was a strong sense of ambiance then. On a day like when this footage was taken, it felt cosy. The seats had the best springs in them and were always comfortable. I used to take it in riding through the tunnel, thinking we could be in the tunnel for ever and no-one would ever know...Just riding in the dim glow. Speaking of seats, I remember drivers sitting on little stools which they carried with them. Trilby hats, fitted trousers and jacket. Oh yes, and a doctors bag. When I was older and going to school, it didn't matter the season, you'd squeeze your shoulders in between the white enamel hand rails next to the open door and look out. I never heard of anyone falling out, but having worked the railway for over 10 years, I'd figure they did. It was a different time. Not a simpler one really. Bay of Pigs, Vietnam, Reds under the bed, Green bans, pollution, leaded fuel....leading everything. But my memory shows me the old days with the warm ambience of 20w bulbs in pearl shell lamp shades.

The Interior Looks To Me Very Much Like The U-Sets, Or "U-Boats;" The Original Inter-Urbans!! The Two Blue Mountains Commuter Sets, Both 10 Cars, Were Nicknamed "The Fish" And "The Chips!" They Had The Same "Chopper" Motor As The Red Rattlers, So Sounded The Same, But Very Fast!! I Cannot Remember A Red Rattler With This Interior; I'm Sure It's A U-Boat!!

It's a standard set. The U boats had arm rests, heaters, fans and the seats were very different styles.
