Vintage Fender Princeton tube amp modification upgrade D-lab electronics

Special upgrade to the Fender Princeton by D-lab. This update delivers more power and bold sound than stock. You would be very happy to hear your Princeton after this work is performed.

Darn, I thought it really was going to be a Princeton non-reverb, since the title doesn't say "Princeton Reverb". They are different amps, more than just the reverb circuit is different. My 1970 Princeton has its original C10N, and I prefer it to the two Princeton Reverbs I used to have, because clean tones are my jam.

You can get a MUCH LARGER sounding am be replacing the 3.3m / 10pf cap resistor pair to 1m / 1000pf and you will send a ton more signal over to PI and amplification. I used a Mullard mustard 1,000pf. There is still plenty of signal diverted to reverb. You don't lose or change any of the Princeton charm.

Great work,, nice job omn the upgrade transformers. The original power transformer is only rated at 70mA on the secondary and 2A on the filament line.. That is not much with 4 preamp tubes and two 6v6gt tubes. The filament draw alone is roughly 2.2A. The new power transformer is also just rated at 2A on the 6.3V filament but has at least rated 100mA on the high voltage secondary..

I thought on PRs it was the undersized PT that gave the PR it’s signature SAG. FWIW ..... the PR, BF/SF Champ, and Tweed Deluxe all use the same 022772 Fender PT.

Dave Anderson I think terry approaches amp building/repairing from an ultra correct hifi point of view, for instance if you put too large of filter caps you kill the character and woodiness of the older amps, making them sterile. Which is exactly what you want for hifi systems.

i have a new 68 pr and i dont like the sag. it sounds terrible. the clean sounds great. also the power trans gets really hot around 160 to 170 degrees after an hour or so.

@@jhue73 That's gonna happen. If you want more "sag", go for a lower wattage amp. There's a number of mods to do to a fender princeton Reverb Amp. The master volume mod, and the Casanova mod to the feedback can really make that thing shine. I've tried the Mid mod, the mids "RAW" mod, and negative feedback MOD... It's not very pretty being OD'd....but get some pedals and drive that thing. It's great with pedals. You got reverb, and the best tremolo IMHO. I've built mine from scratch, on turret board. Check out Rob Robinette's mods, that's where I visited, and I like it.

@@jighead81 i want less sag. i use pedals. i did add another feedback parallel resistor to have more headroom but it really didnt increase the headroom much. i also changed the ot for a hammond deluxe reverb ot with 4/8/16 ohm taps. i built a cab extension with a ragin cajun in it. what is the casanova mod? does the master volume mod help?

Erm no, I have some vintage amps and I'm keeping them vintage lol, they sound great hence why everyone likes them, what I would do however is have you build me a Princeton reverb from the ground up, that way I get a brand new amp rather than devalue my collection, I'm in the UK and will contact u in the new year, as I will want it with a voltage of the uk which to me is 230v, so a nice hand built Princeton reverb or deluxe reverb would be awesome
