I have always dreamt about having a vintage tele. Especially those maplecaps from 65-68, but ofcourse i could never afford one. But Some yeare ago a friend of mine who is a collector asked if i wanted to pay him a visit. He had lots of old fenders, both strat and teles. And we jammed and had fun. I played a really nice ‘72 ash with rosewood neck whiteguard. Quite heavy though. All of a sudden he asks if i want to borrow it. And ofcourse i say yes.. at that moment i knew i was going to keep it. Allthough i didnt know how to afford it. After playing it on recordings and gigs i ask him if he was willing to sell it… after a while we made a deal where i traded in my ‘83 and paid some cash as well. A great deal for me… We kept in touch after that and also played some gigs together the following years. The tele felt good, but was heavy and also needed a refret. I mentioned this to my buddy. And once again he invited me to come to his house. He didnt say anything but i felt he wanted the guitar back. And maybe trading it for another vintage.. but i wasn’t sure. That night we played and talked about fenders and other vintage stuff for hours. Some really great teles especially a red ‘68 that blew me away. I did not say anything at first, but my plan was to ask him if i could trade the ‘72 for that ‘68. And then he asked me if i was interested i trading it.. ! And he asked if there was any of his guitars that i was interested in… told him that the red ‘68 was really interesting… and then he said that it was actually the only guitar he was interested in selling. I can not describe the feeling i felt when i knew i was going to own this guitar. It was not original by any means. Refin, snakebite, new tuners and pickups. But it sounded incredible. I Also paid some additional cash, but this was a great deal for me. I think he wanted me to have this guitar. And to this day, it is still the best tele i have ever played. Thats how i got my vintage. I guess some dreams come true.

Sometimes things happen. In the mid 80's, I was having a beer at a bar where a friend was tending. He said to me that the old guy sitting next to me plays guitar also. So, Ed and I chatted a bit. Then he said that he had a guitar that he wants to sell, and that he lives next door. We finished our beers and walked next door. From under the bed, he pulls a tweed case containing his sales slip from January 1960. White blonde 1959 fender telecaster, slab rosewood board, clay dots, with original strap and ashtray cover. Very clean condition. The sales slip says telecaster and vibrolux amp. He went to the closet and took out the 1959 tweed vibrolux with original cord and slipcover. I thought abought Ed's offer and told him that I would come back the next day. I was quite a poor man at age 25, but I returned the next day and paid Ed his price of five hundred dollars for his guitar and amp.

@@thezakkuhnshow The gear is long gone. It helped us to get our first home. I held onto it for about ten years. I still have photos, and the appraisal from Gruhn's.

I played that 55 white guard JD had for a while. He was cool enough to let me check it out before a show at this little bar outside philly. That thing was incredible. Jd was always so cool to hang with everyone before his shows back then.

Love Zac and his stories! This is one of the best holy grail stories! One ask - can we stop with the ‘what will your wife think’ meme. Zac and his wife sound like they have a wonderful, mutually respectful relationship. No need for the “omg, what did your wife say”. She’s not your mom. Respectfully, can we just let this stupid trope die? Distracted from an otherwise fantastic story.
