I love your idea with using the dill pickle jar top for the bottom. I was wondering how it could be fixed. Keep up the good work.

Excellent restoration. I have never seen an oil can that was so far gone, but which was made useful again. Most people would have scrapped this can, regardless of the Ford logo. So what if it doesn't look original. You saved a genuine relic and restored to it's original use. The vacuum pickle cap is ingenious. I would happily use this can on my grandparents 1948 Ford.

Thanks Pat, it was definitely a hard one to restore and get practical use out of it. I found a couple of them in better shape, but this one I wanted to see if it could be fixed.

Thanks! I was nervous when I tried to separate the spout. The main part was about to crack and break because it was so brittle.

Wish you could of got the top off but you made a better choice than destroying the oil can. Nicely done.
@lostandrestored3 жыл бұрын
I wish I could've gotten it off too. The metal was like a piece of paper, it had rusted so bad.
@conscience-commenter2 жыл бұрын
Why did you drill a hole in the side instead of heating ,lubing and cooling the screw on spout till it came off ? Immersion in oil and repeated heating and cooling would have made the rust weld eventually let go .
@lostandrestored2 жыл бұрын
The metal was extremely brittle any twisting would have destroyed the entire can.

Not bad, for the condition it was in. I can understand not wanting to apply too much heat to where the cap is, as those spouts/caps are solder sealed, from what I've seen, and at least for me, I don't really mess with soldering. But after a long rust removal bath, a long bath in penetrating oil should help, then heat carefully and tap with a light hammer all around the cap to help loosen the rust that's holding on. The one oil can I'm working on now only has tiny rust holes in the bottom, so I'm mostly just trying to figure out exactly what method I want to use to fix that, but something that will still allow me to do a copper plating
@lostandrestored3 жыл бұрын
Wow, a copper plating would be really nice and something I would like to see.
@Tacosgalore243 жыл бұрын
@@lostandrestored the procedure is largely straightforward, electroplating/electrolysis. The one method I see a lot involves copper sulfate though I would want to check and see about its acidity etc, because I don't want it to eat thru any solder that's holding the pieces together.

That turned out great! Im really surprised how nice it looked when done, What was that you used to paint the FORD logo white ? All I could tell was that it looked like a small square piece pf paper or something. What ever it was it turned out perfect and it would be great to know how it was done.What was it? Thanks and great job!!!
@amandaggogo2 жыл бұрын
I know you commented this 5 months ago lol, but I'm 99% sure it's a vinyl sticker they used. So they printed to logo to match the raised lettering on the can, and stuck it on. The clear paper was used to line up the vinyl letters and stick them onto the can.

@@amandaggogo Hi, thank you for answering my question...five months on or not! I really appreciate you taking the time when Lost and restored wouldnt answer for his own channel! I have a small collection of oil cans and it would be really cool to be able to add logo's and such when restoring. I never realized it was a sticker. Thanks again!!!

There's hundreds anyone can find in great condition. This was like taking a baseball card chewed up by a dog and giving it a new life. Yep, it will never be the same, but it still can provide use.

One, was it truly impossible to remove the oil spout cap? Those threads are not usually that tight. They would have been frequently opened to replace the oil. Maybe a bath for a couple of days in a good rust remover would have unfrozen the thread. Your work-around filler undermines the historic look of the piece. Two, were the spouts painted at the factory? It seems highly unlikely. Three, obviously you needed to replace the bottom pan, but you should have used a larger piece of tin so you could have hammered more curvature into it. Your replacement made the right sound, but wouldn't expell much oil with each push. Nice looking work, but a faithful restoration should have taken some of these things into account.
@lostandrestored3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the feedback. I bathed it for 3 days. When I tried to remove the cap I could feel the metal starting to crack. It was so brittle I was afraid if I tried anymore it would have been a complete loss.
