I tell my wife yes I have gone around the bend. But you know I will say I would rather watch an hour of this man repairing shoes or a hand bag then watch “any” sitcom or tv show on abc, nbc, pbs or fox network. The shows are so dumbed down I can’t even watch.

Beautiful restoration of a classic vintage Gucci tote! I know some people may think that spending approximately $1,000 to repair and restore a handbag is ridiculous and the customer could have just bought a new bag, but I disagree. New leather Gucci totes are $2,000.00+ dollars and they are not currently making this classic style with iconic bamboo handles. Additionally newer designer bags seem to be using lower quality components compared to the beautiful leathers and detailing of older bags. The owner has obviously used the bag for many years and knows that it functions well for their life and style. There might even be a sentimental attachment to memories associated with the bag. It is wonderful to watch you bring back to life something that could have been tossed out in the trash. Thanks for sharing the process with us and reminding me to go condition the leather of my favorite handbags, belts and shoes.🥰

Do those bamboo handles hold up? I worry they wouldn't be as strong as the leather.
@SEFenno

Callie Masters, yes Gucci bamboo handles hold up really well. Much better than leather handles that can show dirt and can thin out over time. Wood handles are less common and not for everyone, but I personally love them.

That's the CRITICAL point; the client got better quality than can currently be sourced and spent less too boot. It's very hard to argue with a win/win situation. If your bank balance can stand the "hit", give Steve your work. "You get what you pay for."

@@SEFenno gucci had bamboo handle bags in their 2014 - 2015 season if I'm correct, since I worked as security in one of their stores. Not sure if it was of the same quality as the vintage version though.

Very true; you can tell when you're no longer poor when you can finally afford to buy something that can be fixed instead of disposed of and replaced. All of my summers in college but the last I worked labor jobs requiring work boots. I think I went through two or three pair a summer! My final summer of college before I got my internship I was able to afford good boots, I still own and use them today nearly three decades later.

What can be repaired and what can't is always based on the craftsman doing the repair. My SOG backpack is 5 years old and has been repaired maybe 4 times, because I know how to fix a seam and sew up a tear. Considering I bought the thing for $20 I wouldn't call it luxury. The knowledge of the craftsman is more important than the item thats being repaired.

@@bowtiesandcigarettes Shitty materials can be made into a competent product when the craftsperson knows what they're doing. Cutting into bags is like breaking the eggs that you need to make an omelette: Yeah, it looks nasty at first, but the end results are more than worth the effort. My best friend's dad was an upholsterer, and I saw him disassemble what to me were beautiful pieces of furniture. When he'd finished, the results were much better than what he'd started with. Just gotta' grit your teeth and bite down on the bullet. EXCELLENT JOB, Steve!

I purchased a bag like this off ebay a number of years ago, only it is a brown suede on the outside. Its a beautiful bag and the exterior is still in beautiful shape but the interior has begun to deteriorate just like this. It is a lot of money to repair it but for a vintage bag it may be worth it. I have had people follow me in the mall and ask me where I got it. Its an old Gucci called the Diana after Princess Diana, and there is actually a photo of her exiting a car with the bag.

Everyday I get back to a project, and just stare..what was I doing here. Fixed my 2nd pair of shoes today... My Niece had a almost new Nike's whos top and bottom came apart from each other, making it a kinda weird looking flip flop. But I was there with my shoe glue, glued and pressed them overnight. Now happy Niece. That bag was total class act, worth the repair. Seems like if you knew enough about leather and sewing, you could just make one, sure it would be a Knock Off. But you would only make one, and give it to the women you love. Probably cost alot just for the nice leather. Beyond me.

Can you talk about your materials in a future video? Where do you get your leathers and fabrics from, what do they look like when you get them, what colors are available, what's the most expensive/best deal, what kinds of leathers & fabrics do you recommend or try to avoid for bags, etc. Most people never buy the raw materials, just the finished bags, so it would be interesting to know all about material sourcing.

Shoku nin. 職人。Has anyone seen Jiro dreams of sushi? This is a true craftsman. I have so much respect. The owner who’s at work hours before everyone, cleans the bathroom daily. Show up every day and do your job. Every day. Skills pay bills. Respect.

Great to watch a master craftsman at work. Would like to see more of the work at the sewing machine 👍
