Brent travels to a local hand tool supplier to dig through piles of tools in search of the right ones for jobs today. Brent shows us how to find good hand saws and what to look for. He also looks at hand planes and gives us clues on how to find good hand planes that can improve the quality of our work today. Being able to use hand tools is one sign of a master craftsman. It all starts with good tools.

Im in my mid 30’s and a fifth generation carpenter and a collector of hand tools I love keen kutter, belknap bluegrass, Stanley sweetheart , to name a few i can’t just set them on a shelf I’m always putting them into rotation on my jobs its like each piece has a story to tell I just want to continue the stories and hopefully use them with the same skill as the men who used them before me.

❤ you, Brent! Architect, builder, hand tool woodworker, and virtuoso. I bet you and I could really have some amazing conversations. I make custom hand planes, and I design my own moldings. I recreate old patents from the late 1800’s and early 1900’s. I want to sign up to your Patreon just so we can have the occasional 5-minute chat about old tools. Possible?

What a good video covering a lot of information in such a fun way. Concerning heritage planes, most pre-war planes are pretty good (contingent upon condition). Millers Falls, Dunlap, Worth and Sargent, to name just a few. For new planes, I'm sure Lie Nielsens are great. They're also $$$$. Same for Veritas. As one viewer noted, WoodRiver makes good stuff that's mid-tier, not ultra-premium but not pretendo caca either. TayTools also makes good tools that are well designed and executed without the premium fit or finish, or price tag.

Today I was looking for a hand tool that can help me add some details to the stairs spindles without removing it from the hand rails .Would the small hand plane be the tool that I need? Any suggestions 🤔 thanks.
@BrentHull
@BrentHull 2 жыл бұрын
Good question, small hand-planes can work. It depends on the detailing your hoping to do. A chisel could work as good as a plane.

Pretty sure the transitional planes came after the fact. Not between wood and steel.

@@BrentHull Excellent video, thank you. The metal body preceded transitional planes, by a brief interval. The mechanisms of a metal plane were longer lasting and much easier to tune and adjust. But they were also more expensive and the cast sole is susceptible to damage if dropped. Transitional offered a lower cost than metal bodies with a similar wood-on-wood feel many were already accustomed to. Additionally the wood sole of a transitional can be easily replaced if damaged or worn. And wood doesn't rust. Much easier to clean and oil the few metal parts of a transitional vs an all-metal plane. The transitional plane sought to utilize the advantages from both wood-bodied and all-metal planes.

You lost me when you started proclaiming the virtues of old hand miter saws. The best of cuts were poor compared to the quality of the every cut off of an modern power miter saw. For quality work those rough miters had to be refined with a plane on a shooting board. The craftsmen of old would trade up to todays modern tools in a heartbeat!

I agree. Didn't mean to say otherwise. I think it is more amazing the work they did (see any great historic home with crazy built up crowns) using the tools they had.

I’m sorry but NO Stanley plane should be in any list of “great” planes or “planes to buy”. They are complete garbage. I can’t believe you put it up there with a LN. I would only recommend buying a quality LN plane or a if you are on a budget, WoodRiver. But the Stanley plane were hunt not square at all and the irons are too thin.
@BrentHull
@BrentHull 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your insight. While I agree that side by side the LN is better, I was trained to rebuild Stanley planes before L.N. was who they are. There has been good work done with those planes over the past 150 years and I have too much personal experience with them to exclude them. Kind regards
@bestbuilder1st
@bestbuilder1st Жыл бұрын
Dude, you are TOTALLY wrong - do you work for LN? A well set, older Stanely, will do the work of any LN. I'll chalk your opinion up to user error, or buyer justification. Some people need to justify why they spent a lot of money on their planes. I'm not knocking LN (they're good), but don't dis an old Stanley. Millions of craftsmen over the last 200 years will argue with you.
Don't buy these USELESS vintage chisels.
