the firex mechanical units many ontario home builders used in the 1980s were far more terrifying to children than i imagine these honeywells could be. the audio in youtube videos doesn't do that alarm model/series justice. i see from your profile, you're also from ontario/canada.

Cool I am also in Ontario too. (Southwestern) and I agree about those older Firexs too. But as scary sounding as they were they were effective..wished smoke detectors still sounded like this today. Piezo are useless in my opinion.

@@janeaton3417 depends on your hearing. i've heard or read that hearing impairment affects higher frequencies the most.

@@Jon-hx7pe the FireX units don't chirp when they are first powered up...which is the whole reason why I was terrified of the Honeywell unit in my old house. I would say that the Honeywells are scarier because they're much bigger and something about those large side vents is intimidating

@@BAFVintage i hated the firex because it falsed frequently, often at night - the combo of that and super loud sound. not the manufacturer's fault - it was probably dirty.

At 0:53 lol reminds me when I was scared of smoke alarms and then started liking them. I’m sure you can’t remember but I’m curious if you were terrified of looking at the alarm? That was my fear but worse when smoke alarms go off

Mine was the sound they made. These kinds of horns were around when I was little. The squealer horns were definitely scary sounding but that was the point. No way I could sleep through that but I also had a fear then the way some of the older 1970s units looked. However by watching these older KZbin videos I started to get over my fear and as of late 2017 started my own collection of 1970s units. Mine is small..so far only 12 soon to have 13 detectors and alarms. I also have one Honeywell in my collection the CD200A from 1978. It is neat that something that was once my biggest childhood fear is now one of my biggest adulthood interests.

I like the sound of that. I also agree it looks more like a thermostat than a smoke detector. Very cool and I bet those as you said were rare.

Also just want to know if the First Alert SA76RS can be found in Canada?

Yes I have an SA76RS in my collection and I'm in Canada (Southwestern Ontario) although I got it from a non collector in the fire alarm panel who lived in the USA (Ohio). It was in a house he purchased. I never saw one growing up and I was amazed how small it was when I got it considering it's a 1970s unit. A very cool unit too.

I would think that DU stands for Date Unknown, but that doesn't seem to make any sense to me either...hmm.
