As always, your dedication to quality craftsmanship is well worth the extra time spent, nice job! As for comments, at first I was kind of unsure about the idea of mounting under the bumper, but I have to say you won me over. The lower the winch line sits, the less resistance to the pull there is, a definite advantage. The 8274, being a tall winch, blocks airflow to the radiator a lot more when mounted higher, another plus. Finally, my only real concern to begin with was the fear of bashing it on stumps and rocks. Realistically, if you have not been mangling your tie rods, then you probably won't be hitting the fairlead much either. Nice to see your helper starting to follow the tradition. My daughter started working with me at about that age. She's 44 now and we still do a lot of projects together. Looking forward to your next video, thank you for this one.

I was in the same boat at first I hate how much these winches block the radiator but I was worried about smashing it. You nailed it though if I’m smashing the winch I’m probably smashing other stuff too haha! Thats awesome I hope my kids grow up loving these old jeeps as much as I do! Thanks!

Glad to see you are using the 8274, and not some new fangled planetary setup. They are the standard to which all winches are measured. I love the fact that it holds so much line.

I have a 67 CJ5 I bought 1987 for 600 bucks. I have an 8274 on mine. Fastest retrieving winch ever made! Buick V6 with an SM420 transmission spacer 18 transfer case. I’m Kevin Jenkins and my brothers call me Stinky. Have a great day.

It being a skid plate it being under the front plate makes it stronger and gives you just a fraction more clearance for the winch line

Ha! I know all about mangled frame horns! Remember the pix I sent you, Jacob, when I was restoring my '67? I ended up sawing about 18" of mine off and building new ones. Someone had a PTO winch mounted on the front of it when I bought the poor thing. The winch was obviously stronger than the frame because the horns were bent, cracked and busted. Luckily, I had the Jeep completely disassembled so I could fix it properly. When the frame was completely disassembled and ready to go in for powder coating, I found the winch had also twisted the frame. It wobbled rather than sitting flat on the floor. My friend Wyatt and I spent an entire weekend working on it til it was finally straight. Moral of the story....be smart when you use your winch. It can really do some damage to the wimpy Jeep frame if you do something stupid. I was so disgusted, I threw that winch right in the scrap bin. Probably not a great idea in retrospect. 0:03

If you end up doing a Saginaw steering upgrade you'll need to move the winch over all the way to the passenger side fame rail to make the steering box fit FWIW

I almost set a box up there to plan for the future but I’ve not had a problem with the stock steering so far fingers crossed! Good point!

Nice job! I prefer doing corner offset for the skiplate, but it's not going anywhere the way you put it together. I hope I can offer a pre-shaved version of the #HOSSfairlead some day for the 2x3 bumper setup if it becomes more popular. It is nice being able to tuck the winch up that extra little bit and have easy to access hardware.

Keep up the good work you’re putting out excellent products for these old jeeps! Thanks!

That bumper arrangement is way stronger than the rest of the Jeep, but I think that's a good thing. I was a bit surprised to see the way the winch is mounted, using a hi-mount winch like a low-mount?? But that means your radiator air flow isn't impeded as much as it would be with the winch mounted above the bumper. When I get to the winch on my 3B, it will be a low-mount type and I'm thinking to have the fairlead above the bumper. A hi-mount winch like yours would cost a minimum $2k here, where I can buy a new 12000lb winch for around $350 - not that I need one that heavy duty.
@SevenBarSalvage9 ай бұрын
That was part of my thinking it blocks the radiator so much otherwise! These old winches have a crazy price tag I’ve just been fortunate to find a few deals. I really like the setup where the fair lead comes out of the front of the bumper too. Thank you!
