Thanks for sharing, I love that old vintage test equipment. That meter reminds me of my old Simpson 260 analog meter my Uncle gave me. My mom & dad lived in Newark, NJ in the 40's & 50's and I remember my dad telling me about companies there like the the Weston Instrument Company.

Pretty cool, even with the incorrect meter movement. Ceramic wafer switches. You don't see that every day!!

I have something very similar, but is a bit newer, maybe the 60s. Analogue meter in a wooden box, only with mine, it's actually a plastic unit designed to sit in the box.

Love the old test equipment. I remember an instructor once saying "we went to the moon on a Simpson 260".

Yes they are pretty cool. Have an old meter someone gave me & of coarse no leads, also no box with it. but with a zippered case & it's a Sencore M# FE16. Also have another old one he gave & can't find where I stashed it, but I just love these old units.

I am also a Simpson 260 brat. I remember reading Popular Electronics and shopping at Radio Shack attached to Tandy leather. This channel is almost the old Popular Electronics on KZbin!

What type of solder would they use back then that would operate in the 230v range?

That gauge is likely merely stuck. You can most likely fix it. There are plenty of video that will show you how. Check how to fix a "stuck" VU meter.

No, the needle was moving around as I shook the housing.

The calibration is probably off, but can be compensated for.

Meter was totally non responsive to direct input tests. 17k ohm at rear terminals.

Probably, but it's not mine, so I won't spend 40-50 bucks on a new gauge.
