I get someone might simply not be in to Megos or even the 1974 releases but to be so upset as to bother with a dislike... well, I think we're getting more of an insight into the disliker than the content.

Straight out of my Mego era (which was 1974, 5 & 6, I think). I got all 8 of these worlds greatest heroes plus Joker and my sister had Dinah-Mite. I never knew Superman did double duty as Dinah-mites friend until recent years. I have repros of all these DC heroes and foes now, plus Tarzan and vintage Spidey, Cap and Dinah.

I still find it absolutely incredible the vinyl playsets were made in Brooklyn, I think, if I remember correctly. So many factories in Brooklynn, as well as the other boroughs. These toys being around today are a testament to how they were made, even the imported goods from foreign factories. Getting a Batman, and the Batmobile... that thing survived eight foot crashes down stairs. And how many kids were carrying Mego figures everywhere they went in the 70s. No wonder the gloves were lost. Lol

Oh gosh, the Wee Woodys, it's been a minute since I've thought about those. I remember going into a small toy shop with my Mom once back around 1976, and that place had a bunch of these toys there. It was a store that mainly sold games and toys for younger aged kids, so I guess that makes sense. For some reason I wasn't interested at all in the line even though I was about right for it age-wise. Instead, I wound up leaving with the Hasbro COOTIE game, for some unknown reason lol.
@jakecamp123 жыл бұрын
Playsets and vehicles are what made the action figures worth investing in. Mego really understood the long term play value when you had these things. Imagine a time when we played with these things and did not keep them in the boxes to display on a shelf. Crazy times LOL
@japewisteria3 жыл бұрын
I think Mego was one of the last companies to make capes from both Marvel/DC in the same toy line. There could be other more modern lines, but I think this was it. And they did it in 3.75, as well. Kids don't get IP or branding or all the other stuff that keeps properties from mingling...they just want the Hulk to take on Superman. One of the many reasons all 3 lines were iconic.
@BrickMantooth3 жыл бұрын
Well, Lego has that honour now but I get what you're saying.
@bobastu3 жыл бұрын
Funko does that. They are not cloth capes, but still. Funko is what Mego was in the 70s into the 80s. They secured multiple IPs very early. Mego's beauty today lies in their simplicity. The same body, but updated to new millennium construction methods and materials. There is such a market, I think, if they can secure Star Wars, if only for a few two packs guaranteed to sell. Luke/Vader, Boba Fett/Din Djarin, et al. I picture a Farmboy Luke figure. Then pilot outfit, Stormtrooper, Hoth, Dagobah/Bespin outfit, Jedi outfit, et al. If Mego did get the license instead of Kenner, I doubt we'd have the SW toy legacy we have. Still love Mego!

Groovy music, maaan. Rock on witcho bad self. Great videos. Flashback inducing for all of us "Adult children" that traveled here from the 1970's. Zayre, Ayr-way, Woolworth's, Value City, 3D-Danners Discount Department stores, Western-Auto, Montgomery Ward's, Service Merchandise, and whatever local "five and dime" stores you had. They live on, in that small friendly town called Memories. It's only a short car ride away. We'll race to the toy dept. to get what we want, and then complain to go straight home in anticipation of "adventuring" with our new action figure/ vehicle/ playset/ utility belt. Hoping we don't have to stop at the STUPID grocery store. See you in the next toy isle.

Question: When buying vintage Mego from ebay, how can one trust the figure is actually vintage? Trek and PotA have been redone/are being redone and other lines like DC come from FTC (if they’re still selling/introducing new characters). What figures are “easier” to purchase than others, price wise? I apologize for the questions, my area really isn’t overflowing with collectors lol
@BrickMantooth3 жыл бұрын
Don't apologize for the questions, there are several "tells" in modern reproductions, the Mego Museum galleries cover a lot of this.

some of those earlier like dr. mego are hard to tell what's what. they are beautiful reproductions. I'd say be persistent for sure. that's what I did. I knew nothing of what to look for. kept snooping on all sorts of pages. (like mego museum) and asked questions. if the seller wasn't sure or did not know, I said thank you and moved on. that was over a common soldier ape too.

@@camcordernonsense5264 Thanks for the reply, I’m just a little worried about getting suckered. I wouldn’t mind a vintage figure with repro gloves or a belt or whatever, but I’ve heard stories of people being ripped off by getting something willfully labeled as vintage when it wasn’t 100%.

One question I would love to ask Marty Abraham and I apologize if it has been answered elsewhere. Why Mr. Myxyptlk as Superman's arch foe and not Lex Luthor? I mean Batman had his four greatest adversaries. Spider had a respectable showing of Green Goblin and Lizard. Why Mr. myxyptlk? And why was a scrawny midget imp redesigned as a full size man with a collosal beer gut? My guess is licensing on Lex was too much Money and they had spare penguin bodies that got repurposed as Mr. myxyptlk since no other figures needed one. Now if they had made the Adam West Batman back then or a modern Shatner doll....
@BrickMantooth3 жыл бұрын
I feel like I can answer that. At the time Luthor didn't have a great design, he was a guy in a lab coat or street clothes. DC gave him that purple outfit a year or two later.
@arthurcummings36793 жыл бұрын
@@BrickMantooth true, he would just be a generic bald guy in a white coat. Forgot there were years ol Lex that were pre purple suit. It must have existed by the time of the pocket heroes as the Lex figure was sporting his purple suit
