Beyer sounded very tight and balanced to me. EV had a surprising amount of low end and a nice mid range thwack. Akg sounded wide, meaty and open. Very nice comparrison between legendary mics in their own category!

while the re-15s are darker and more midrangey, they take a hi-shelf wonderfully and brighten up in a very pleasing way

Amazing M160, 414 and 4038. But if I have to choose one? Vintage akg 414 EB with c12 capsule!

I heard it that way too, really liked the M160, but the 414 EB won me over. Really clear, and just the right balance between crisp and smooth (where modern 414s, 451s etc.. can be a bit harsh). Really nice extended low frequency range too, which together made for a deep image. I felt it a bit less the Coles, but it's nice, and with some EQ, or other closed mics it would shine. Those RE-15s had a nice character crunch that for certain tracks would draw me more than the Coles.

The 414 EB's, M160's and 4038's, along with U67's, are the best vintage stereo OH's you can buy. RE-15's very cool stick definition on the cymbals, but off axis sound isn't as pleasing - prefer them as spot mics imo.

Same here. Love using Re15-16s on high hat or ride.

M160 is most well rounded, but the 4038 has a nice crunch that might work for some genres

In this particular case, the Beyer M160 gave the best result. Definition and crispiness without any agressive tone.

I was surprised by the EV's. I didn't like the Coles. Favorite of the bunch, but not by much are the AKG's.

Some API’s for gain but otherwise no EQ, etc!

Sounds like the polarity is flipped on the 414s (414s in phase with close mics), had way more low end than the others. Maybe different pinouts?
