my Dads WW2 Cattaraugus is on a shelf just behind me.when i made Order Of The Arrow in the early 60's he got the knife out of hiding and gave to me. he was a Second Lieutenant and like most Vets from that war never talked about it. he called it his "sheath knife" and the one time i asked if it was a fighting knife all he said was the only real thing he did with it was cut his way out of a burning tent. i used it on a few canoe trips and then put it away as a keepsake.

I had gotten a Cattaraugus knife from my grandfather when I was young. He was in ww2 and I remember him telling me that the grunts aka foot soldiers got tired of the thin crappy design of the ka-bar breaking all of the time and ended up stealing the Cattaraugus knives from the quarter masters because they were a hell of alot stronger and designed better. I don't know where people got the idea that the ka-bar is so collectable since the people who actually carried them in war said they were complete shit. The Cattaraugus knife was never issued to commandos, and yes they were originally meant to open crates up. That's why on most of the ones you see the front part of the knives are scratched and worn out.

The 225Q was an ebay special. The Camillus I got from a indoor flea market and the Pal I got at an Antique shop. Been hunting around like crazy for them.

No PAL Cutlery bought Remington Cutlery in 1939 and closed in 1953. After WW2 the need to continue producing the fixed blade fighting type knives stopped because there were so many and soldiers were bringing them home from the war; they focused on other things like pocket knives and shears. Your PAL 35 was made between 1940-53. PAL never became ka-bar. Remington cutlery took back the reigns after 1953. RH stands for Remington Hunting and several RH models were produced starting in the early 20's by Remington Cutlery. PAL continued making the same products.

I've got a Ka-Bar, 2 pilot survival knives, and an old Pal fighting/utility knife. I read somewhere why the pommel on the pilot knives were shaped like a nut/bolt head but I can't remember for the life of me right now.
@paulie4x111 жыл бұрын
Like I said, I have several Ka-Bar's, one knife even had a note written on the sheath, to his son, from 1943, but the one Ka-Bar has a round tang at the pommel instead of a regular rectangular slot on the pommel.
@donjames57614 жыл бұрын
i wonder if hes still trying to date the knife or it keeps turning him down ?
@Bushcraft41212 жыл бұрын
There is a pin in the pommel that you can hammer out. However it may need to be heated up to get it out. It might not go back together very well though. I can't remember a sight but I do believe someone is selling refurb kits for them. Comes with a new pommel, pin, and leather washers. If I find the person I'll send you a message. I'm pretty sure I found it by a google search

Neat video. Obviously ebay is a great (& easy) place to look for these knives. I got a camillus pilot knife in excellent condition a few years back for around $30. My understanding is that these pilot knives were not great knives - for example the tips had a propensity to snap off. On the other hand, presumably you only used them once - if your plane went down. Not an every day used tool.

I carried mine for 11 years. Germany, Panama, Alaska and all over the States. Lots of field duty. It's a great knife and I wouldn't hesitate to carry it afield today.

I have a Woodcraft style blade with leather handle and aluminum pommel, 5 inch blade, aprox 9 inches long. Marked pal in a circle on one side, and Fabrique-en- Allemagne on the other side, which means, made in Germany in French. Some ppl think it was made after Pal bought Remington around 1940 to 1953, but I'm more inclined to think it was before that, since it was made in Germany. I know they used the Pal stamp back until 1924 the trade mark of Utica razor knife Co.. Any clarification on this would be great. Thanks ahead of time

What does the tang stamp say? there were actually a handful of people making the ka-bar design during WW2. Camillus, Ka-bar, and a few others. Could be a rare one.
