US Fighting Knife from WW2 RESTORATION

Restoration of an OLD authentic WW2 Fighting Knife PAL RH-36 from the USA and scabbard. Absolutely amazing piece of history from 1941. Sold extensively to US Military Bases to soldiers and sailors. US WWII RH PAL 36 Fighting Knife Stamped RH PAL 36. The knife was manufactured by the PAL Cutlery Company. The knife blade shows a clip point steel blade with a single cutting edge and fuller on both sides. The blade is marked near the guard reading "RH PAL Made In USA 36". The knife guard shows a simple steel design with a stacked leather grip.

This was a really nice restoration to see, the masterful skills of the Restorer have given this historic knife a genuinely needed new lease of life. These knives would have been a great comfort to Troops, knowing that if they needed to, they could rely on their personal knife to defend themselves during combat. The before and after images are remarkable, and I particularly liked how neatly the finger guards on the knife matched the sheath.

You did a very nice job restoring a piece of history. A practice I use when hand stitching leather, is to tie a knot in every whole. Done this way, even if the stitching is cut it will not come apart. Thank you for letting us share your experience.

I own several RH-36 knives along with many others including the RH-35, Ka-Bar and such. All original and in excellent original condition. The 36 is my favorite (except for the Ka-Bar that I was issued in 1973) Love the use of all manual tools in this video. Keeping the tradition alive is a wonderful thing and keeping history alive is even better. Very enjoyable watching you work. Keep it up!

This is the same knife my father carried as a pilot WW2 pilot in Chennault's 75th Fighter Squadron in China. I still have it in un-restored condition, but decent condition, considering how much as I misused it as a young boy. I cherish it today and will pass it on to my own son.

Wonderful craftsmanship! I was mesmerized throughout the entire process. I enjoyed that you were restoring a GI fighting knife as I have a nice collection of knives including my Kabar fighting knife that I bought and carried through my years in the Army. I knew the Army would not issue me a bayonet to keep throughout my tour so I had my Kabar. Eventually I did buy a bayonet but that was years later and after I left the Army for my collection. Oh, I wish I had your skills and patience!

Good job and great steel in that Pal .My understanding is that Remington stopped knife production in 1939 and Pal bought Remington ‘s remaining supplies and knife making machinery.I own a Pal and sheath like it and my daughter named it Excalibur and carries it on her side .

Really enjoy your videos. I recently restored a Case xx 337 6"Q WW2 fighting knife with a stacked leather handle. Unfortunately in this case the leather washers for the handle were beyond salvage, just crumble dry . Lucky for me the blade was in great condition polish and buff and it looks great! I used antler for a new handle and made a leather scabbard. Saddle soap and Shoe polish made it supple . I appreciate your skills and I learned from watching your video Great work you are inspiring. I believe you can order the leather handle washers from Kabar, I think. I know I've seen them online some where. I have a Kabar that my uncle had when he was in the Marines, but he took very good care of it. It is on its second sheath. Dog got the first one, or so his story goes.

With so much work did to the blade, I am surprised you used the old leather washers. A knife that old will have the washers too dry and brittle for hard use. Good job on the pommel.

Nice work! That basic design was made by at least two different companies during the WW2 era; I've restored two that were marked Cattaraugus 225Q. The pommel design is different on the Cats, though, as well as the guard. The Cats also (usually? or always, I'm not sure) came with a left-handed sheath; the best info I could find on that was that it was meant to be worn on the soldier or sailor's left hip so he could still carry a handgun on his right hip. A funny thing nowadays is that some folks are claiming it was a "special forces" knife, and that does not appear to be the case at all. There were A LOT of the Cats made and they were issued to all sorts of servicemen in the different branches, from supply guys to tankers and whomever. Apparently they were basically a dime a dozen in surplus stores for many years after the war. Now of course people want a couple hundred dollars for them.

I read a few years ago, that the cats and pals were not military issue. What happened was that only certain people were given either the KABAR knives like the MK-1, or the KABAR MK-2, or the Marine Corps Version. These were for crew served weapons teams, frog men, pilots and the like. The rest of the men who wanted a knife, went to the base exchange and private purchased a CAT or PAL. If those were exhausted or there was no PX, then there were theater made knives. Made from leaf spring steel, aircraft parts, etc. Some of these theater made knives look pretty crude, almost like prison shivs, but others are well made, and have rater colourful grips made from aircraft plexiglass, etc. The scabbard could be decorated as well. Of course, another source for blades were either a captured, or otherwise procured bayonet, that was customized into a very serviceable combat knife.

@@jamesdolan5236 there were definitely gov't contracts for the Cats. It's hard to sort through all the details of all the MANY knives and knife manufacturers used in WW2 because a lot of the records (both gov't and commercial) have been lost, and there's a LOT of just plain hogwash out there now. Much of it is just something somebody's cousin's grandpa told them and they repeated it in an article or forum, and then it got repeated even more until it's accepted as the truth... and no one really knows. "Theater" knives are indeed a fascinating topic all unto themselves... as you said, some were basically junk, but a lot of them were really nice examples of the craft.

​@@jamesdolan5236 you probably already know this, but KA-BAR is a company, not a knife. There's not really a "Marine Corps version," it's just that some were stamped USMC or USN. If you dig around you should be able to find scans of the original measured drawings and specs online. What's come to be known as the "USMC fighting knife" or "KA-BAR" was designed by the US military for the US military, and was made by several different manufacturers. Including the Camillus, KA-BAR, Union Cutlery, and PAL knife companies. . KA-BAR still makes that model today, along with a boatload of their own designs. But they didn't invent it.

Many were indeed purchased from all the companies already mentioned, who were already making more-or-less similar hunting knives before the official gov't designs were developed. Of particular note is Randall knives. They were a tiny one-man shop at that time, it was just founder Bo Randall who was making them at first. But his knives were highly prized for their sturdiness, good looks and overall quality, and although they were a bit pricy they became very sought-after. Many point to the success of Randall knives in the 1940s as being the beginning of the modern custom handmade knife industry in America. Now-equally-famous custom knifemaker Bob Loveless wrote that he wanted a Randall when he was a young man in the merchant marines, but didn't want to wait for one or pay the high price, so he decided to make his own. He and a handful of others got fairly well-known too in the 60s and 70s, and that REALLY kick-started the custom knife biz as we know it today.

For more info on Randall knives, try to find a copy of "Randall Knives: A Reference Book" by Sheldon Wickersham. It's excellent. For more about Bob Loveless start with "How To Make Knives" by Richard W. Barney and Robert W. Loveless. Bob tells his early story in it, and provides a fascinating walk-through of his stock-removal process. It also contains a long section with Bill Moran, who forged his blades and was one of the first, possibly THE first modern maker who started making "Damascus" knives again. There are lots of other good books and articles about Randall, Loveless and Moran, of course, but start there. You won't be disappointed.

Nice job. I made a L shaped fixture out of wood to hold the knife. I clamp the vertical part into my vise and then clamp the knife to the horizontal part. That way I can't walk into the blade. It also guards the cutting edge. I like to put the knot in between the welt and one of the sheath sides. That hides the knot and makes it look cleaner.

Enjoyed watching the restoration. Very well done.. I own a RH36 . If I could make two points . I was disappointed that you didn't copy a the actual original pummel shape. Also, I wonder why you didn't "blue" the blade after completion. The patina of the knife was intended to reduce light refection when in use on the battlefield. I will look for more of your restorations !!

I believe the first examples were made without patina on the blade and I wanted to have this one shiny anyway. I can always come back and replace the pommel if I needed to or add patina to the blade.
