Thankyou for the video! I'm restoring a 1965 cb72 and the tacho is reading 2000 rpm without the engine running! I knew Honda's were good but this one's exaggerating!!! Anyway I was considering replacing it with an electronic one which for the CB72 means the speedo would be changed / replaced also. Anyway after watching your video I am now going to open it up and try to salvage it so thanks for the confidence boost! Cheers!

Thanks for the video. My tach stopped working on my 82 Suzuki GS1100G. I've been wanting to get it fixed and kept postponing from concern about not knowing what would be getting into. I'm ready to open the seal and glass to check it out.

@@fupabox Right before I started to open the glass, I tested the tach with my drill turning the cable and it worked fine. I then checked the male outlet at the engine connection and found the male end of the gear was not there any longer, broken off apparently. It looks as if the gear and male connector piece can be replaced without difficulty. Thanks for your help. I'll post a video on my site sometime soon.

Great video. You must be much more patient than myself as my metal trim "tore" trying to separate it. I've gone through so many of these through eBay that I will try your fix. How has it held up over eight years? Can you also confirm which "direction" worked when testing with the drill?

I sold the bike about a year after the vid , but it still worked fine . if you look at the gauge from the front the front the gauge moves clockwise , so reverse when spinning from the rear . Some gauges go the other direction but very few

Great to find your KZbin video. I've been chasing screeching and erratic tachometer readings for quite a while. Finally I can put some real sense into my efforts. I have 20 speedometer and tachometers all told in my spare parts box to play with. One on only one of my Suzuki motorcycles has a tachometer that screeches and bounces all over the place on cold mornings. I'm guessing Nippon Seiki made a LOT of these for Japanese motorcycles because mine look a lot like yours. I have replaced cables with new ones from Suzuki and double checked and replaced the sending gear at the front wheel several times. I'm looking at a speedometer with a broken needle that didn't jump at maximum speed of my drill which was 20 MPH. Maybe it needed to go faster but it's faceplace is like new. It's odometer reads 75553.0 yep, not even 10.000 miles. Any ideas why these kind of things happen?? I don't see any magnetized particles around the bell or magnet.

Hey bud, i had a question i am restoring (or trying to ) a 550k gauges, i already got them separated but i was wondering... you wouldn't happen to know how the tripometer handle/conical thing comes off? i dont wanna break it, i know on some there is a screw but i see none so im guessing it has to be pulled out? thank you for your time

what could be some reasons for the tachometer not moving at all?
@fupabox

Broken cable, stripped gears inside, it may be an electronic tach. and the pickup wires are broken .

Hi. I assume a speedo with the same issue would be the same process to fix? Mine gets bouncy between 50-60mph. Brought a new cable, didn't fix the prob.
@fupabox

yes.. pretty much the same except the odometer gearing can sometimes get in the way, and is hard to work around..some are gear driven , but most are not..

fupabox thank you. It's a '75 CB360T so very similar. If the lube in there seems a bit sticky from age, I'm guessing a little carb cleaner to blast out some of the old lube, followed by a couple dabs of fresh silicone grease would do the trick? 😀
@fupabox
@fupabox 7 жыл бұрын
yup , that should do it.. watch the carb cleaner doesn't get on any painted #s on the speedo or odometer..it will melt the paint off in some instances...don't ask how I know :(

how to install taachometer on the motorcycle which doesnt have any tachometer from the factory??
@fupabox
@fupabox 7 жыл бұрын
you need a universal inductive pickup tachometer . it needs to be designed for the number of cylinders you have as well this one will work www.glowshiftdirect.com/white-elite-10-color-tachometer-gauge.aspx

I have a 83 shadow. my tach jumps a little but has a whining noise. any idea whatsup?
@fupabox
@fupabox 7 жыл бұрын
the drive cable is slipping or just likely needs lubrication .. unhook it at the tach. and drip some plain motor oil down the cable a few drops at a time.. not too much.. 10 drops will be enough to get all the way down ... If you can slip the inner metal cable out when the cable is unscrewed from the tach. just pull it out, clean with wd40 and put a tin coat of grease on in and slide it back in.

The whining noise comes from the internal mechanism of the tach. The jumping needle is caused by a (nearly) empty damper. Nippon Seiki gauges often have that issue.
