This proofs it. This man is a wizard! Turned a rusty bike from the trash into a spectacular and shining and eye catching magnificent! 😍🤩 Just missed the usual grease & ball bearing that goes into the pedal section and the usual chain lubricant. They're essential part of the ritual and should be included 😉

I thought for sure that a few of those components would be RUST WELDED on. Happy to see the dismantling didn't give you too much trouble. This rebuild took me back to my childhood when we would make Frankenstein bikes from the bike/frames we would find on trash day. Thank you 😊

@@CycleFields Giving an old bicycle another chance now is way much better to watch first of all because some of them are bringing back old memories from old times back when they were popular and secondly yeah i watch other new dream builds but they are reaching some prices that very few would afford one of those so they always will remain dreams and these projects are more realistic closer to most people the only problem to source true genuine parts.. Big love for the full STX line i use to own a Niagara my first bike with full drive train Shimano STX and when i ride-it back in those days few friends of mine with they parents doctors lawyers have buy to them upper class bicycles equipped more expensive parts some have Deore LX components others Deore XT and XTR specially when we were going in short trips near a lake we take a short brake from riding put all bikes line them up on they'r stands side by side eat some snacks drink before riding back home and i use go around all bikes lined up next to another to look closer annalyse components and latter i search in magazines from the bike-shops to see how different the upper components they are and the prices, i always thought to up-grade my bike with more expensive parts but i never did it because of money or other priorities.. so my bike remained all 5 years with STX line in my possession and latter i trade it + a small difference in money to an older guy who was interested in my bike he wanted to do a lightweight gravel bike from my Niagara despite was initially a hard-tail aluminum + magnesium fork mountain bike without any suspension not even fork the bike was very light (since i kept-it with only minimum equipment just like you, no wheel fenders, lightest seat-post, tires for city- not even bottle carrier, no lights or other things that could add extra weight and it was kind of fast like that for riding in city and for roads near-about since i could manage to keep up with other guys who had road bikes with narrow tires.. anyway i trade it eventually and instead got a Scott with full Rockshox suspension and first gen SLX line for going into forests on some other harsher mountain trails.. but yeah when i watched your clip with old STX line parts instantly it flashed back my bike in my mind.. so yeah i wanted to tell you did a great job and say tank you to remind me of my old bike ! ;0)

really nice to see that someone is able to do this without high end tools, gives me confidence to do this myself (can't really afford those). the bike came out great. I was a bit sceptical about the handlebar, but it really fits the bike cause it's also from that time period. btw: love the green color!

Spray paint is the best. Long trusted by the professionals over long years of experience. But I also see people who paint directly by hand without mixing the paint as long as it's enamel paint and just painting over the material without scraping off the old paint. As i noticed, you are also a good paint chemist and painter. And you choose only the best. Congratulations!

I was thinking the same thing! I picked up a nice Specialized Crossroads which appeared to be in much better shape than this one, but the seat post and the stem would not budge!

It can really depend on the quality of the original assembly. If there was enough grease or anti-seize compound used - it gets sealed in there and can last despite what the external parts of the bike may have endured in its previous life. Alum. posts in steel frames are more prone to seizure. This bike had a chrome steel post within a steel frame.... "cheaper" quality for the time; but more enduring because there's less risk of galvanic corrosion between different metals.

@@erieq22 I don't think that's strong enough. I've been using penetrating oil, PB Blaster, but to no avail. I'm pretty sure it's steel on steel so the rust must be very bad.

Я недавно купил с рук практически новый велосипед ( от силы года 2 ему , но видимо он больше стоял чем эксплуатировался) и всего за 30 евро ( живу в Германии) для Германии 30 евро это не деньги, 3 пачки сигарет. Вообще в Германии хорошие велосипеды выставляли на улицы для желающих ( теперь уже этого практически нет)

Real nice old MTB feel...llooks amazing!...love the colour (green being my fav)...but surely the cost of new parts and time negates the restoration?.. how ever nice it is to see an old bike brought back to life.

My wife has a well taken care of specialized hard rock circa 1998. I have upgraded it a few times. However, if you take care of a bicycle there is no reason why you should need a new bicycle in your lifetime. The mods I made to hers have been adding slicks as opposed to knobbies ( no need for knobbies for what we do ), going to a 1x8 as opposed to a 3x8 (less maintenance), a few cable changes, adding protective tape to prevent chain slap chips/cable rubbing wear on the paint, and just general tlc. My only advice is buy a quality bike from the start. My last bike was a pro-flex 857? It lasted me 20 years but was Too much mountain bike for my new locale. Now I have a salsa journeyman which I am sure I will ride til I die. Keep on riding on 👍
