Wow - The Telly does the job very well. It´s a little bit thinner sounding than the original U47 snd the sibilances are a bit more present. It´s a little bit sterile in direct comparison - I love the bottom and the warmth of the original one. But after a usage of compression and filters you won´t hear any difference in the mix. Nice microphone!!!

What is more amazing than anything is the quality of this microphone could not be recorded or reproduced with anything available at the time of its design.
@diegoambrosio7 жыл бұрын
With this test, it gets easy to identify the difference between both microphones! It seems as the vintage is less brittle, i.e., brings less high frequencies while maintaining balanced mid-range and low mid-range. The new one seems to bring more definition and clarity with more response on the high frequencies. Perhaps, the vintage one would provide good balance for a gritty-voiced singer. Does anyone know of a MOSFET microphone? I read about the Wunder CM50, but I am not sure and could not find a video of that microphone yet.

Vintage mic has a natural compression. I’ve noticed this in a few great vintage mics. It smooths things out a tiny bit like adding a touch of La-2a. The new one doesn’t have that and the transients are more “spikey”, however this would go away and match pretty well with a touch of a nice compressor. They are very close in tone though. Also as others said… More highs in the new vs vintage. I’d say I could match it perfectly by just small EQ and compression that I’d already be adding anyway. Good job Telefunken!
@EandVEntertainment7 жыл бұрын
The difference between these two microphones is only slight. The vintage mic has a saturation thing, maybe a low end thing, going on that gives it a bigger size. The difference may be negligible depending on who you ask, but at 10k should it be? There are companies like Flea who make really accurate clones for less than half the price whose sound is just as negligible. If you're willing for a slightly larger difference between the two mics, but want to stay in the ball park there are microphones by Advanced Audio or Peluso that are in the 1-2k range and will give you much of the flavor for much less money.

Probably the recording or another factor at play (honestly don't hear that on my end). The vintage U47 is actually the brighter one when comparing frequency response tests, most likely due to the original M7 which is brighter than the new K47 in itself.

The 50 mic shootout they did proved that a $100 microphone can sound just as good as a $5000 Manley Gold. Literally any decent condenser microphone gets it done. U47's are just for show because people expect to see them in a reputable studio. I've used them, they aren't special. Just expensive.

Andrew Elias it really just depends on the voice.
@modelcitizen19777 жыл бұрын
Take a $200 AKG Perception 200 mic and a $3000 U87 and put them both in a full mix, and I'll give you $20 if you can consistently tell the difference. You can split hairs all you want and say "Well, you really have to have XXX to hear the difference" or "With the right vocalist, it makes all the difference in the world.", but the proof is in the pudding. The mix doesn't lie, and I have yet to meet a vocalist sound that radically different between two microphones that a 3db bump in EQ somewhere along the curve couldn't fix it.
@samuelfleisher7 жыл бұрын
Andrew Elias use a 2 p200s as stereo drum overheads. Then switch them with top of the line DPA, Neumann, blue etc mics. They will sound completely different.
@EandVEntertainment7 жыл бұрын
As I said before it's really vocal dependent. I record a lot of old school crooner style vocals and operatic vocals. Big warm voices they get thinned out with cheaper/bright mics, EQ or not. That's not to say that you can't get good results with the cheaper mics, but many can be harsh up top and you have to EQ the hell out of it. The more expensive mics are more even more particular. I personally don't sound best on a U47. I sound better on an M49 or a U67. I have a kind of voice that sounds good on most mics, but you can still hear a difference. When you match a mic with a voice properly you won't need the EQ. I'm very big on that method of working. It's very Al Schmitt.

When it comes to any vintage microphone vs a reissue, there can't really be a fair comparison... even two vintage U47s against each other will sound slightly different. That being said, the differences between the reissue and the original are effectively insignificant... no average listener could tell the difference to save their lives - or would even care for that matter. It is so important to keep that in mind when we're talking about the thousands of dollars that separate these two microphones from each other, let alone from many other great microphones that cost a third (or less) of what these do.
