Nice explanation. California issued month stickers for the first time in 1976. Your plate would never have had a month sticker on it in 1964. Cars I've seen place just the 1964 sticker on the plate and use the two ears for both the month and current year registration stickers.

I think the 1964 sticker was supposed to go in the left side well where he put the month sticker.

I used to live in .CA and always Lived the old 50's, 60's and 70's colored plates and am glad the brought those choices back a couple years ago as Vanity ones.

I had a 1965 Honda S600 with CA black plates. I scraped off all my year stickers down to the original and put my New yearly sticker on a rubber magnet. So when I went to car shows i took off the current to show the original.

I moved to Oregon 3 years ago, much easier up here. You only need 1 Oregon YOM plate and you only pay one fee for life of the vehicle. If you bring a vehicle in out of state it's $250 but only once, never pay registration again.

Nice video. I wanted to post a few comments about the process. The YOM program was extended a few years ago to include cars and trucks up to 1980. Trucks from '70 to '74 must use the appropriate 6 character blue commercial plates. 1975 to '80 trucks may use 6 or 7 character blue commercial plates. 1970 to 1979 cars must use 6 character blue plates. 1980 cars may use 6 or 7 character blue plates, this is the only year car that can use 7 character blue plates. As for restored plates being accepted by the DMV, the form says "plates may be restored but not replicated."

Good vid. I have a couple of CA YOM plates on cars. Well done video and I learned from your dish soap trick (thank you). On one of the YOM visits to the DMV, they asked for the current plates on the car (meaning the ones I was replacing). This is something you may have to have with you. This was not a consistent requirement from the DMV (I know... the shock!), but you should be prepared to either have them or have a story as to why you don't have them to see if they will let it slide. Started the processing that day - Approval from Sacramento was needed in order to make them legal. Approval in just 18 working days. Follow the list that I put in the "About" section at the top of this page so you don't have to leave the DMV and go back another day just because you don't have something with you. Take the current plates (that are on the car) off BEFORE heading into the office, they ask for them. Bring proper tools. I've read guys complaining about it, but I had zero problems!!!

If you bring the car in from outside California, yes you have to surrender the plates. If they are California plates you might have to pay fees if the car was not registered as a Non-Operational Vehicle, but you have to check with the DMV if you need to surrender the original plates. There is a Vehicle Registration Fee Calculator on the ca.gov website, but for the current vehicle owner. So maybe you start there and if all else fails - try contacting the DMV

I checked with CA DMV and the only year cars that can be registered with a YOM plate is 69 and older. However, for commercial vehicles, you can register 72 and older. So, for commercial vehicles you can use the blue/yellow plates. Only catch is, you will need to use a six digit blue/yellow commercial plate for a 70, 71, or 72 commercial vehicle. I am in the process of registering a 6 digit set of blue/yellow plates with the CA DMV for my 1970 El Camino.

IcemanGaming Great news, the YOM has extended to 1980 as of last year. You can use the Blue & Gold plates on your 1979 car with a 79 sticker. I just did mine on my 1978 Ford Bronco with a 78 sticker last week.

Haven't seen anything that states UN-restored Plates Only - The DMV agent knew my plates were restored, even asked me how much I paid for it to be done. He didn't mention anything more about it. The agent did not keep my plates, he did photo copy them in B&W and Color full size copies. Have two suggestions- -You can call or go down to your DMV & ask an agent. -Get them registered & then have them restored (but if I had done that, I would've lost a 64 Sticker that was needed to register them.)

1) Do they actually require the correct letter prefix for a multiyear plate? If so, how do you know what's correct for your car's year? 2) I presume a correct original year sticker is not required, but you chose to use one. Where'd you get an original unused 1964 sticker? 3) Month stickers weren't used on your plates originally, but I assume they're required now?

1) Prefix Letter: You can get Any Set for any year car - I've seen an "FFC" on a '69 Camaro & I instantly knew it was a YOM - Your call "F" being an early issue would never have been on a '69 Year Model Car - Just search your vehicle year & look at all cars of that year to see what is most common... go from there. 2) Year Sticker: Dbl ck with DMV if you really need it - I read it was needed - I got mine on eBay 3) Month Stickers: Are Required Now - My Red "JAN" is from eBay

DMV is issuing legacy plates, though they need at least 7,500 preorders by January 2015 for each type, before they begin producing them. Right now the black with yellow text seems like it'll be the only one that will reach the 7,500, though I'm pretty sure some rich car fanatic will drop (7,500 - # current preorders) * $50 to make sure that they get their plate, if all else fails, then give all those plates away as gifts, or sell them, or something. lol

I am building a custom car based on a late 60's design with a 72 frame and registration. I think really old plates from the 20's would look awesome on my car as they are longer and sort of european. Will DMV allow much older plates on my car? What if i use the registration sticker to cover up the year stamped in the plate?

Talk to a supervisor if the agent is not helping you - Take in any info to prove them wrong. Bring pictures of other 72 model cars with Blue/Yellow Plates... Also the DMV will be issuing "Legacy Plates." I will but a link in the my Description above - Hope some of this helps - Keep me posted

The drop down tags are worthless, don't use them, put your plate with the year of car sticker up front, keeping it real with the red month sticker, give away on YOM plates is the blue month sticker.

Funny you say that - My 64 Sticker is not staying on well (even thought I have sprayed strong adhesive on it) & have thought of just carefully removing it and start putting the yearly Tag in place of it... I could put the 64 sticker in front, like you mention...

I hear Florida and Cali says must send them UN RESTORED original plates, not allowed to refurbish them. I just got my 53 and it is id say about 7-7.5 too me, I want to have it restored and try and send it in, do you think this is a bad idea? are they going to send the paint chip out for testing or some crazy ness to ensure I didn't restore it? any thoughts?

Is the plate your asking about already on the car? If so - just register the vehicle - but you could get a ticket for only one plate - but I see that often... Don't tell the DMV you only have one plate - they wont know - Then you can get one of the custom made plates to match the one you have. I see that often also - Find a company that makes nice repo plates - This video is for placing 63 style plates on a car made from 63 - 69 that has plates other than black & yellow -

I only have one plate for my recently acquired 1967 Bug in CA (car is registered as non-op to the yellow/black plate) and am interested in your comment about only having a single plate... It sounds like I cannot get a new aftermarket front plate manufactured? Or I need to order new plates from the state? I'm confused and the DMV form isn't helping. THanks!

Here's that List: 1. Verify plates are DMV clear - call 1-800-777-0133 2. Have two plates - one will not work for registering 3. Remove Current Plates on car and bring inside with you 4. Have your Current Registration!!! 5. If your up for renewal, bring Registration Renewal Notice 6. Print out the DMV form 352 from DMV Website - Fill out & bring with you I Was Not asked for my Title or Current Insurance papers - but have them just in case!

UPDATE: these laws are dumb they said the yom only applies to 69 or earlier and 1972 trucks only so if you guys are planning on getting a nice set of blues think again its not happening calif dmv is not doing it....

Chris Dee CURRENT UPDATE: As of last year, DMV extended the YOM program to 1980 and older (for both cars, trucks, motorcycles and trailers). Last week I put a set of nice blue plates (w/ a 78 tag) on my 1978 Ford Bronco.
