Just came across your video today, in 2024. Love it that you finish what someone decades ago started. Im sure they would be pleased knowing someone cared enough to do that. God bless. Thanks for sharing these.

So glad you were able to use these... we love giving old fabrics new life, avoiding the fate of them ending up in the city dump.

Makes me wonder how many old quilts or quilt blocks get thrown out. 😢

What a lucky find! The fabrics in these bow ties look SO much like the fabrics in the blocks my grandmother left in a suitcase...unfinished Jacob's Ladder quilt top, including mostly remnants from clothing. All from 30s (including some feed sack fabrics!) or 40s. She died in the late 60s and I was so happy to get this old "cast off" suitcase of hers. I was able to finish the Jacob's Ladder with her blocks and fabrics. I feel so blessed since her quilts disappeared soon after her passing, if not before.

Improved 9 patch was the one my dads mom made for each of her great granddaughters! I have the patches for my younger daughter, but the oval piece is missing! I will have to draft one in the larger size to finish it! Grandma made many quilts and gave most away! She made us grandkids flannel utility quilts by machine to be used and washed frequently! We all treasure those quilts I learned applique quilting, and she didn't make me anymore! She called it "laid work" . She was born in 1903 and one of 11 surviving siblings! Only 2 of us have continued the family tradition of quilting! Nice to see others work saving the older work ! ❤

Just can across this video, my we’ve come a long way in quilting. Fairly new quilter here, but I have to say it seem like the top quilting has taken precedence over the piecing of quilts. All of quilting is beautiful without a doubt, but now I have a even harder skill to work on. Thanks for sharing 👍❤️😊

I think what you do is awesome. I’m looking for vintage quilt tops now to. Last year a really nice lady passed away and her daughter in law started selling her unfinished projects almost immediately. By the time I found out all that was left were 6 placemats that were made like the US flag. I was thrilled. It kinda was upsetting to see them sell the lady’s hard work like that. Sometimes our children don’t appreciate what they have until it’s gone.

Thank you. Many tomes our kids don't realize how much work we put into our quilts.

Eautiful finds. I have a quilt from each of my grandmother. They were anywhere from 40’s and older. One I have is the bow tie. I need to start looking for a pattern, as I want to make one for my granddaughter. I’m 65 so the fabrics are very old.

Thank you for sharing. Your voice is so soothing to listen to till the end of this video. I have been buying vintage quilt tops from EstateSales lately including those from the 70’s. Recently, I opened an old chest trunk and found a very well made yoyo coverlet that’s made of feed sack fabrics. I was ecstatic I think it’s from the 30’s.

Very true. I enjoy all of her videos. I have a 301 in the same color schemes as her's and I enjoy watching her work. I don't know the first thing about sewing anything. Being a man I never learned. I just like working on the machines to get them racing along with those perfect Singer stitches. Plus her voice is very soothing to me. I lost my Mom a couple of months ago and these videos are soothing and calming.

My husband’s step mother recently passed away and she had an unfinished doll quilt top that her mother made in the late 30s or early 40s. I had the pleasure of finishing it. She also had some old Grandmother’s Flower Garden blocks that I am going to appliqué onto solid blocks then sew them together. She also had some sports signature blocks from a high school in the late 1930s. Not enough to make a quilt with. Any suggestions?

You could make them into pillows, or a wall hanging.

The red and white with the nip in it I feel certain it was near 1945 to 1950. Ive seen 1 very similar. I think you could make a lightweight quilt or a duvet cover and that way protect the vintage fabrics a bit.

I think you are right. They were meant to be used.

Hi there! I was hoping for some advice on some blocks I found while cleaning out my late grandmothers home. I’m so new to quilting and I don’t want to mess up or ruin these precious blocks! Yet..... I’m eager to see them in a finished product. I just know these beauties were meant or be displayed. I don’t know what timeframe they’re from or anything. Do you have any advise for me. Some are a bit stained on the white areas, I didn’t know if I should remove the stained area or not. I wish I could attach a photo!! I have looked the design up and the pieces are called “grandmothers flower garden.”

Melissa, there are quilt soaps on the market that you can buy to soak your blocks in. Try your local quilt shop and ask them if they carry any and ask them how it should be used. There should be instructions with the packaging. I have a video where I show how I used a quilt soap to clean a set of Strawberry basket blocks. It is ok to clean the blocks before putting them together in a top. You may have to press them to get them back into shape after they are washed due to shrinking of the thread they were pieced with.
