Great video, nice work on that lead and the cap insert.

Thanks. Nice to know the background to the 'rubber' insulation.

Thanks. Yes I don't have an .5uf caps so I've put 2 x .22uF in parallel. However I've ordered up some of the right value so I may replace them later.

It can go either way, sometimes in the same radio. In the case of the Rogers Ten-60 some went gummy, some went rock hard and flaky, and oddly enough some was still quite usable. I don't know if the dye they added to colour the insulation was related to the deterioration but the wire with yellow or white insulation held up the best and was almost like new, the blue was rock hard, the green was like gum, and the red was somewhere inbetween.

Thanks - both of them are stuffed now.

should be OK - has worked fine in the past - everything will be glued up when it's done. I'll admit I was pleased with how the cable turned out. Now I have to do a second one that goes to the magic eye..

As for capacitors I used to buy the poly film caps, in bulk, from Radio Daze but they seem to have changed the layout by only selling in packs of five and not offering bulk discounts. I'm thinking of ordering from WJOE's site instead for most of the poly film caps I need but they don't have all of the sizes and voltages I need like 1 and 2 uf caps at 630V. So I will probably get the remaining values from Mauser along with a bunch of electrolytics and resistors I need.

Hello John. Very good work so far, specially with the cable, looks very neat... Leaving that cap lead only touching the can is enough to assure a good contact?

nice restore on the wire bundle

Rotted rubber wiring, it seems like there was a plague of that everywhere in the late 30's and early 40s. I'm just finishing up a Rogers set from 1936 that was full of rotted wiring, most of the rubber didn't go hard but turned into a gummy substance that would fall apart if you tried handling it.

In my case the insulation has hardened and become brittle so it flakes away when touched or moved. I doubt when these were built anyone was considering what their condition would be like 70 or more years later!
