A very nostalgic video, thanks so much. I grew up in Reading in the 60s and early 70s and regularly spent all day Saturday at the western end of the platforms where the locos would come to a standstill, Brush 4s, Westerns, Warships and Hymeks. Great memories.

What a lot of nostalgia is packed in this set Bob. Even a Thumper thrown in. Such gems deserve to be seen. I wonder how many watching this are regretting not being able to do a similar job on the everyday traffic at their local hotspots? Count me as one! Chris

I'm delighted you've enjoyed it Chris, and greatly appreciative of your kind comments. Although, better quality and sound would be great, to see how things were 40 years ago on film does indeed remind us of how things were back then during our younger years....Many thanks...Bob

Hi again Bob, Reading General was our nearest large station for spotting and between 1968-71 was always worth a trip funded by the paper round. I only remember the Southern Terminus as a semi-demolished building (car park later) then replaced by the single platform you filmed the Thumper arriving at, some days we would see the fireless boiler steam shunter at Huntley & Palmers biscuit factory working in the distance from the platform you were filming from. I would never have believed the changes taking place currently at this location, but in the 70's the only construction I recall was the bridge widening at the east end of the station. Greetings from a very warm Dolau, Brian.
@robmasterman10 жыл бұрын
I remember that fireless loco at H&P Brian, I haven't been up to Reading for a while, and probably wouldn't recognise it now. It was somewhere I occasionaly passed through on my way to London. I'm currently on holiday in Dorset, where the temperatures for most of the week are around 39 degrees. Good to know you've settled at Dolau, a beautiful place and a Station to be proud of....Best wishes...Bob

More fabulous nostalgic footage Bob. It is striking to see the contrast where coloured signals are aplenty in this era, yet we see semaphores still in use at Ferryside and Burry Port in 2014 !!!

A very nostalgic video, and not a hi-vis jacket in sight! Reading has changed beyond all recognition, especially with the recent £800million spent on it by Network Rail. The new western flyer-over that serves to relieve the conflict of N-S versus E-W traffic is a masterpiece.

Sheer quality Bob.,all my era ,especially Cardiff General,noted the Cardiff West box demolition train. Loved the hymek propelling up the centre roads. I could watch these for hours,nothing on the Roath dock branch and junction at Llandaff by any chance ?.. thanks again Brian

+Brian Tucker The Hymek propelling on the Up Main at Cardiff (General), still called that then, is propelling the Canton Breakdown Vans, very probably from a callout to the docks somewhere; they were 'always off the road' down there. West Box was indeed demolished around this time, but by a class 08 shunting parcels vans out of the Riverside platforms (8 and 9) which ran though the trap points and would have gone down the bank into the Council's dustcart garage, originally tram sheds, had it not been for the pile of rubble it created holding it up! No Breakdown was needed to demolish the box, the recovery of materials was done from the trackside, but of course it was called out for the retrieval of the 08. The driver was sacked. I was a freight guard at Canton at the time, and must thank Bob for the memories here.

great traction there, good to see the peak in action again, the glory years of british rail, lots of diffrent locos, you did not know what you were hauled by then untill it pulled into the station, i remember going to york from newcastle you would have expected a deltic, how disapointed was i when a 31 pulled in, that then changed locos at york ( where i got off ) and 55 007 pinza took the train to kings cross
@robmasterman10 жыл бұрын
I'd forgotten about the changing of locos...another great memory jogged!....One of my next uploads will be behind a Deltic from Leeds to Kings Cross in 1968...so keep an eye open...Bob

@@robmasterman I remember going up to see a relative in Leeds, must have been about 1968, we were hauled to Leeds from Kings Cross by D9015 Tulyar and came back a few days later behind D9021 Argyll & Sutherland Highlander. Wonderful machines that made a noise totally unlike any other locomotive.
