I love seeing the wind and brass instrument players having to blow their instruments but having to fight off laughing from Rodney's routine. You can see it in the shots where they're smiling through their mouthpieces

Not many comics today can do rapid-fire jokes like Rodney and some of the old greats. Rodney's a master at economy of words, not to mention having one of the all-time great stage personas.

The band was a show of respect and was part of the bit. Not bad mouthing the band. I am very happy to find this clip as I saw it on TV as a kid. Watching the band crack up made it memerable. Talked about it with kids at school it was so epic. Thanks for the renewed memory.

Rodney was famous, but seriously underrated, I would rank him as the best comedian of all time. If Netflix paid Dave Chappelle over $40m for 2 shows, Rodney would be able to demand twice that if his prime.

Rodney got his stage name from a character on "The Jack Benny Show". That Rodney Dangerfield was a brash cowboy star, voiced by a 22-year-old actor named Elliott Lewis, who'd go on to make hundreds of radio appearances, before becoming a producer and director in radio and TV.

That band is like if Bania was there on stage going "That's gold, Jerry! Gold!" after every single joke. However, it's a comfort to know back then networks were already at ruining decent shows by trying to hype them up and appeal to a wider audience. I like to distinguish real nostalgia from a false sense of nostalgia.
