We invite you to join us on March 8th, 2024, as we kick off our first auction of the year. The exclusive event includes four thoughtfully curated vintage watches from the families of the original owners. The auction starts at 9 am PST and concludes on March 12th, 2024, between 5:00 and 6:30 pm PST.
All inquiries about these watches and the upcoming private auction can be directed to Brandon Frazin: BrandonF@bobswatches.com.
VINTAGE ROLEX GMT MASTER REF. 1675 ROOT BEER
The GMT Master ref. 1675, featuring brown and gold tones, is usually called the “Rolex Root Beer.” However, Brandon has nicknamed this phenomenal pilot’s watch the “Grape Soda Dial” after the unique patina on the dial.
The original brown watch face has aged to more of a purple hue, a type of faded tropical dial we haven’t seen before. Of course, this ref. 1675 also has the Root Beer’s charming trademark gold nipple hour markers, filled with Tritium in a pale cream color. The dial exhibits some normal reddish discoloration around some of the hour markers.
The bezel on this GMT was originally brown and yellow and has since faded to a pale blueish and butterscotch hue. Otherwise, the case still has an overall sharpness.
This watch, circa 1979, comes to us directly from the family of the original owner, complete with a full set featuring the original Rolex box, papers, hang tags, and the original sales receipt with serial numbers and the seller’s last name to help further validate the watch.
VINTAGE ROLEX SUBMARINER REF. 5513 MAXI DIAL
The original owner of this Submariner, circa 1981, was a diver who used the watch often. It had immense sentimental value as a gift given to him by his wife on their wedding day. Flipping the watch over, we see the lovely, personalized engraving, "To Lee Love Always Ruth 4-30-82,” to commemorate the occasion.
The example we have here sports a Mark IV matte black dial. Rolex initially produced reference 5513 with glossy dials and then switched to matte near the end of the 1960s. Rolex would then produce many variations of the matte dial during the watch’s impressive, decades-long production run.
The Mark IV dial was available until around 1984 and is distinguished by larger “Maxi” hour markers and a “zig-zag S” Submariner logo, which is shorter than the depth rating below it. It is also commonly regarded as the non-chronometer-rated counterpart of ref. 5512 produced during the same era.
VINTAGE ROLEX EXPLORER REF. 1016
This adventurer’s tool watch, circa 1972, was sent to us by the wife of the original owner, the latter of whom was meticulous about preserving all the original accouterments associated with the watch, including the Christmas card gifted alongside the watch, the original box, punched papers, case back sticker, booklet, pamphlet, and hang tags - a collector’s dream kit!
Ref. 1016 is one of Rolex’s longest-produced models, running from the late 1950s until the late 1980s. During its many decades on the production line, Rolex made several upgrades to the model’s design. Early models had glossy dials, which were eventually replaced by matte dials in the late 1960s.
Our example from the early 1970s displays the time on a Mark I matte dial called the “Frog’s Foot” after the unique, squat shape of the Rolex coronet.
VINTAGE OMEGA SPEEDMASTER REF. 145.022
The beloved “Speedy” famously went to the Moon aboard the Apollo 11 mission in 1969 and was the first wristwatch worn on the Moon. Now referred to as the Moon Watch, the Omega Speedmaster is one of the most sought-after luxury watches on the secondary market.
Ref. 145.022 never went to the Moon, but it did venture into space and enjoyed an incredible production run from the late 1960s until the late 1980s.
Our example circa 1970 sports a desirable step dial that was originally jet black and has since faded to a stunning, even brown color. The accompanying “Dot over 90” Tachymeter bezel has also aged from a black hue to a very attractive dark grey color.

Lovely watches. In my opinion, the 1016 is just about as perfect as a watch can get.

Some great options Brandon with some interesting stories behind them. If I had the spare money It would be a very hard choice but the Sub and the Speedy just edge it. An impossible choice without seeing them but I would be happy with any of them. Thanks for sharing.

I wonder if people are creating these tropical dials. My Submariner is approaching 40 years and the dial still looks like new.

Inspection is key. Our team uses various methods to validate authenticity with these types of dials. Given the provenance of both watches in our auction (both coming directly from the family of the original owner), as well as the history of the watches themselves ie. documentation that this is possible, we are sure this is truly organic to each watch. To your point, artificial tropical dials are out there and we take that into consideration. Thanks for the inquiry!
