Vintage Scalextric cars, how to clean white mould / white rust

Scalextric servicing and maintenance, restoration
Hi and welcome, today we will be looking at issues known as white mould also known as white rust, white mold, white powder. In this video I will show how to clean and treat, and hopefully prevent from coming back.
The simple steps shown in this video are as follows.
1, fully disassemble the car
2, using a tooth pick or similar tool to remove any large areas
3, fill a container with warm water and washing up liquid and fully submerge all plastics and leave to soak for 30 minutes
4, remove all plastics and refill the container with warm water and washing up liquid and place the plastics back into the water, using a flat toothbrush scrub all plastics and the toothpick when needed in the more stubborn corners
5, once all white mould has been removed dry all plastics
6, once completely dry place all plastics into Olive Oil fully submerged and leave for a minimum of 20 days
7, after the 20 day period clean with warm soapy water and dry
8, reassemble the car
I have done this with several scalextric cars and currently haven’t had any reoccurrence of the white mould.

Very good upload, really helpful. Ive been into slot cars on and off for a few year's and having found an old Audi Quattro the other day, stripped it and cleaned it up. Thank's to you I got the rear grille piece under the spoiler back in properly, so all good now.. Many Thank's Hope to see some more video's from you soon.

I bet a few seconds in an ultrasonic cleaner or under a karcher would get the mould off!

Great video ,I to have cars with this problem my cars are stored in a climate controled basement, but I believe it is the darkness and some humidity contribute to this . I have a question for you did you submerge the axles and tires in the olive oil as well and one more question do you or any one you know , have a video on how to restore old scalextric formula 1 s not the sledge motor the other ones thanks again for the post you have a new subscriber Keep it it the slot GAS on !

Wow, I have never seen this. I have an old martini 911 where the white has turned yellow / brownish, do you know any way to fix that other than a repaint?

Hi, I will experiment with a few ideas I’ll let you know if any of them work as I have a few cars with the same problem, the main Cause of this is direct sunlight causes the white cars to yellow but using common bleach submerged 48 to 72hrs and then washed with warm soapy water can sometimes solve this but I will test it out one of my cars and record it and I’ll post results on KZbin.

@@topvolts81 it will be interesting how that works. The car has martini tampo so I have been scared to mess that up though I sourced some repro decals. I painted a rothmans 962 which had turned beige, was a fun project. Yes sunlight is the issue, nature hates shelf queens maybe??

@@markwheatley5191 Try soaking it in some peroxide for a few days. But you'll need spare decals first, just in case...
