Comprehensive program! Glad you had all those shots from the old PRR Pemberton line, I grew up in the Moorestown-Mt Laurel area & saw outbound commuter trains sometimes, I recall one stopping at Masonville station (1 loco, single coach).

Grew up in Audubon, a block away from the tracks and station. Spent many a day playing and exploring the tracks and area. Across from the station to the NE was a coal yard. There was a siding that led to it for deliveries. The Graisbury Ave bridge was torn down in the late 70's or early 80's. We used to run up to the top as the train passed under enjoying the engine exhaust. There was a derailment near the bridge of a SE bound coal train heading for Atlantic City. Lots of kids were collecting buckets of coal as many older houses in the town still used coal-burning furnaces. Still have dreams of the trains and track. We learned by accident that if a piece of metal was placed across the rails, it would set off the crossing signals at the Merchant Street grade crossing which was just SE of the station. We put coins on the tracks and the train would flatten them to twice their original size. The good old days...

I know you displayed the state map at the start of your presentation but it would be cool if you had map that showed the station/town location when you displayed the rail infrastructure so their locations didn't have to be researched. Not from New Jersey but love looking at all railroad content and learning about railway history from all over.

I think you have a photo of my Grandfather’s Buick in front of Stanwick Moorestown. He was a trackman for PRR. I would ride to work with him and then walk over to Stanwick school house for kindergarten. 1960. Not sure what year track gang moved out. He also worked out of Hatch. They must have turned that passenger train at each end because it ran with that special coach head out in both directions. Mtown to Camden at 5pm. Camden to Mtown 750am.

Do you know anyone who knows about the Sterlng Mtn RR ? It started just across the NJ/NY line in Sloatsburg NY. I ask b/c on Good Friday 1964, my 7th grade Bud & I walked along the Erie RR tracks from Glen Rock up to Sloatsburg. We found the Sterling Mtn tracks & walked up them. Got dark, called our parents to come and get us. Thank You, 🙂

Me and my son have been looking for a historic station in Bellmawr, NJ. There is an active line that runs past our home on Browning Road and evidently went a bit further prior to the creation of the NJ Turnpike which cut the line off. It is still acive up to Bellmawr for freight but there are some properties adjacent to the line which are shaped in a way that would lend themselves to be rail stations. Do you have any information about this?
@WestJerseyNRHS9 ай бұрын
Ron Baile says the station was at the intersection of Browning Road and the railroad. Our historian John Burlage added some detail about the line: "The rail line referred to is the former ACRR/PRSL Grenloch Branch. It is in service up to Bellmawr, as there are customers in the industrial park through which Benigno Blvd. passes. The line is abandoned south of there. The segment from Station Ave., Glendora was abandoned by PRSL in 1973, and the segment from Glendora to Bellmawr was abandoned by Conrail in 1984. The NJ Turnpike was opened in 1952, while the line was fully intact and operated. Much of the abandoned right-of-way is now the Blackwood Railroad Trail. There is an exhibit along the trail in Blackwood where West Church St. crosses the right-of-way featuring an ex-CNJ caboose. As far as I know, there are no railroad buildings left along the right-of-way. The Grenloch station was moved away from the railroad to become a residence, but this building was razed several years ago. The only extant Grenloch Branch station is the Blackwood station, and that was moved to Olde Stone House Historic Village, 208 Egg Harbor Rd. (CR 630), Washington Twp. (39.776339, -75.093396)."

In the 10 days since I left that comment my son and I have found a map from 1907 which showed the location, right where you said at the intersection of Browning Road and the rails. With all the great photos I've watched in this video it's a shame I didn't see one of the Bellmawr station. Do you know of any photos of this station?

Who owns the rails that run from Camden thru Audubon to the shore? Does anyone still use them?
@WestJerseyNRHS Жыл бұрын
Conrail owns the line from Camden to Winslow Junction. The original Reading line from Winslow to Atlantic City was abandoned in the early 1930s when PRSL was formed. There is still freight traffic on the line, although much reduced since the B. L. England power plant closed in 2019.

This is interesting to me. I only lived in S Jersey for four years, but I know some of these towns. Suggestions: rather than alphabetically, maybe follow a line, referring to the map occasionally. I wish you'd say if the facility still exists in each case. Is Atlantic City Union still there? I'm guessing not. Be nice if the pics were full screen. And, forgive me, but clicking dentures, or whatever, are distracting.

did seaside ever have rail service ?
@Cha-y4125 ай бұрын
Yes. Track crossed a bridge over the Barnaget Bay from Bayville NJ to Seaside Park ,then ran North from Seaside Park to Bayhead NJ . I believe that track & bridge was owned by the Pennsylvania Railroad but not sure.

@@Cha-y412 thanks...iam old....but i remember the bus station in seaside looked like a train station
@Cha-y4125 ай бұрын
@@joebarnaskas I believe the bus station in Seaside Heights was at one time a train stop. Once the train entered Seaside Park it ran North on Central Ave into Seaside Heights and beyond to Bayhead NJ. There was a spur that ran South for the pound fishing trade located in Berkeley before Island Beach State Park. There are tons of photos of steam engine trains running on this island. Before my time but some of my neighbirs still talk about it. I live in Seaside Park where Ive seen photographs and remember a big steel sign being in the building that use to be a Coast Guard Station now Boro Hall that read J St Crossing watch out for trains. And I think PRR. But that sign hasnt been seen in 40 years. When I was a child in the 1960s there were abandoned rail cars on the Seaside side of the bridge crossing that burned down in the 1940s. But they to are long gone.
