Thank you very much for your time and effort in making this outstanding video. That old Stihl 034 cut that tree with no problem. Maybe it is time to get that Johnson/Evinrude up and churring water again. There is something very special to my heart watching your channel. I love old time equipment and trying to restore it as best as I can. MERRY CHRISTMAS and HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Thank you for such a nice comment. The Stihl 034 works well in certain circumstances, like cutting up that rotten tree. The old Johnson outboard hasn't run for a long time, but if the neighbor that owns it would like me to get it operational again I can do it. I have a lot of experience working on outboard motors. Thanks for watching and Merry Christmas and Happy New Year !

I had an 034 and sold it based on what I have seen on your channel. I believe I have the same saw as your Frontier but its branded Skil. Got it free a month ago or so and got it running.
@mrobsoletesvintagehomestea9156Ай бұрын
The 034 has it's limitations for sure. The Frontier saws were sold under a bunch of different names, Skilsaw being one of them. Great little saws, but parts availability is next to none.

Hi Mr Obsolete. My Mac 610 has a slight bog when I initially give it throttle it gets better after warm up. I’m not quick to start making carb adjustments I often find my saws run worse. I love my 2 Macs and want them running great because I plan on using them often.
@mrobsoletesvintagehomestea9156Ай бұрын
First try turning the low speed needle about 1/8 of a turn counterclockwise. If that doesn't change anything, a carb rebuild most likely is needed.

I lucked up on a 066 magnum Stihl with a 36 inch bar and chain. The guy that I got it from gave me a brand new 28 inch bar and chain with it for getting a big red oak out of his yard this passed week.

Many Pro Loggers say the 066 magnum is the best saw Stihl ever made. That was an excellent find.

Looks like the 034 cuts pretty good to me. Cutting rotten pine wood is tough because it has cyystalizd sap in it which will dull a chain in a heart beat.
@mrobsoletesvintagehomestea9156Ай бұрын
The 034 did a good job of cutting up the rotten old fir tree that blew down. If you watch carefully you will see anytime the chain speed starts to drop, I lift the bar up slightly to get the chain speed up again. If I don't do this, the chain speed will drop off a small amount more, then the chain will stall. The difference between cutting good and stalling the chain is a narrow window of rpm's. A really weird saw !
@johnclarke6647Ай бұрын
@ it might be a carb problem. I adjust the carbs on my saws to maintain the same rpm throughout the cut.. richen it up, slightly, to see if it maintains its rpm. It is hard to tell how much pressure you are putting on the bar.
@johnclarke6647Ай бұрын
@ I listen more to a saw than watch what it is doing. I know you run more oil in your gas mix than Ido. I run 50:1 or there about sand use non ethanol gas with Stihl Ultra and stabilizer. I adjust a carb to the rich side of the curve. I want a saw to maintain its rpm throughout the cut and continue to idle if I set it down. I want it to continue to idle until it runs out of gas if need be. The plugs on my saws are usually dark, but I have never smoked a saw by running it lean, either.
@johnclarke6647Ай бұрын
@ never forget a carb tune is only good for the day it was made. If the weather is colder or hotter it will be out of adjustment. More saws are burned up in cold weather than I hot weather. This is why I always carry a small Stihl screwdriver with me, so I ca readjust the carb of red be.
@mrobsoletesvintagehomestea9156Ай бұрын
The problem with the 034 is not a carb problem, it is a design flaw. I can't put anywhere near as much downforce on the 034 as I can with my Mac 610's, both with 24" bars The Mac's have the torque to keep cutting in hard cuts, not so with the 034. Many have commented that 20" bars are the max for an 034. I had an 18" bar on it originally and it worked great.

The OMC V 4's were introduced in 1958 and were 50 hp. The OMC V 4's were the largest selling 4 cylinder outboards ever made. They were excellent engines.
@alisaproctor7725Ай бұрын
If one were to find a sprocket with one less tooth than what's on it, you might be able to cure the low torque problem.
@mrobsoletesvintagehomestea9156Ай бұрын
The 034 has the smallest sprocket available on it already. I did a muffler mod on it which barely improved the torque. The 034's were just a flawed design. The 034 Super and the 036, which replaced it, were much better.
@alisaproctor7725Ай бұрын
@@mrobsoletesvintagehomestea9156 Well I guess using it way you do is the only way to go without porting it, Which, would be a crap shoot, and costly if you're paying someone else to do it.
@mrobsoletesvintagehomestea9156Ай бұрын
The best way to get an 034 to have hp and torque both is to put an 036 top end on it. It is just a bolt on modification. The top cover needs to be modified for an opening for the decomp valve or replace the top cover off an 036. I think I need to find an 036.

034 does much better with a 20in bar. 24 is asking alot in good wood. Still a good little saw though. 60cc and up i do a 24in. See ya next time!
@mrobsoletesvintagehomestea9156Ай бұрын
When I received the 034 it had a 20" bar but was totally worn out. I swiped an 18" bar off another saw and used it initially which worked really well. I was originally going to put a 20" bar back on it but found a super deal on the Tsumura 24" bar and put that on it. I was surprised that the 034 has so little torque and the chain stalls easily, even though the saw has a lot of hp. I run 24" bars on most all my midsize saws of 60 to 70cc's with no problem, so I mistakenly thought it could hack it. Oh well, live and learn ! Still works great in certain applications.

I just bought a 1992 036 pro,very low hours, now I have a 62 cc saw and my 1988 066 for the big wood
@mrobsoletesvintagehomestea9156Ай бұрын
I don't have an 036, but it would be interesting to run one against the 034, just to see how much better they were.
Selecting the right bar length and chain pitch would go a long way.
@mrobsoletesvintagehomestea91566 күн бұрын
My 034 came with a 20" bar, but it was junk, so I bought and installed a 24" bar on it. The reasons for that were that the 24" Sugihara bar was on sale and was about $30 less than a Stihl 20" bar and most all my midsize saws of 50 to 60 cc's can easily run 24" bars, especially my McCulloch Pro Mac 610's of 60cc's. So ,since I have the 24" bar on the 034, I will use the saw where it works best, cutting small wood, trees, and larger rotten wood and use my McCulloch's for the harder jobs.

@mrobsoletesvintagehomestea9156 Pro Mac is a big torque saw. I even run a 18 inch bar on my 6HP G444 to get max rip out of it. I have a 10 pin sprocket. I want to try on it someday.
