The fact that you can never reach this thing tells me one of two things: Either A. it's only a mirage as the real creature is still fully inside whatever dimension the rifts are from or B. this creature is so ungodly large that it can be seen from hudrends, maybe even thousands of miles away.

The lore does expand pretty deeply into lovecraftian themes so far even though it’s unfinished. A great plague destroys all living things and a great human inventor attempted to build a machine to stop the coming apocalypse. The device that he created unintentionally was/became/was destined to be some lovecraftian eldritch god of another mirror reality that exists in the same place as ours just in another “dimension” After the creation of this “machine god” thing these temporal rifts began appearing and the drifters began to crawl out of it. There’s a lot to it honestly and I did a poor job of explaining. But yea basically humanity did a fucky wucky and awoke some ancient evils from a parallel universe that is now slowly seeping in and infecting the world in a similar way that the plague once did in the past

I feel like overexplaining or diving too deep would ruin it. one of the reasons lovecraft is so good is the otherworldly mystery aspects he presents. derleth liked to explain too much I think.

Yep jumpscared me a good few times during a temporal storm where I’d turn around inside just to see 2 drifters bowing down to thin air instead of attacking me, almost always happened when a cat was around when I had a pet mod too so there’s def some AI coding wires that got crossed there I think lol

Saw that thing walking about in the horizon during my first temporal storm(it was a medium sized one). I was safely inside my home and looking through the window when I saw it. There were a couple mutated drifters prowling about trying to get inside as well. It was really unsettling to experience...

During my first temporal storm I saw this thing and got freaked out thinking it was an actual enemy (I play with maxxed settings which is why I was able to see it). It seems like this thing is like the giant gears though and doesn't actually do anything for now. I think the reason it was glitching out was that those entities, gears and walker, might never despawn and just hang on players' horizons then scale up when the game detects your in a storm. Food for thought.

funny thing, i once watched my friend play this game and he was off exploring a nearby mountain while his temporal gear thing was drained and he was going insane when he decided to throw a spear at it and FUCKING HITMARKER SOUND and then some ungodly screech FUCKING wrecked the entire server and made him go temporarily deaf and blind in the game ive been trying to find a video about it but i haven't had any luck finding anything about it it scared the fuck out of us😂

My head canon, with no evidence for it whatsoever, is that Dave is the reason our temporal stability returns to normal. He's walking in the opposite direction to the cogs in the distance, so I think him doing that is what's keeping Vintage Story's world stable to begin with. My thinking is that our world is as alien to Dave as the temporal storm dimension is to us, so he's walking in a way to close the rift between the worlds so both can survive. Put simply, Dave is the man with the plan.

man its like that dream i had about "resident evil: the last" it's the end of the world and there are only 3 infected ones. a giant floating sphere, a giant deer looking thing, and a normal sized man. they stick together in a group. they are peaceful until provoked. they always radiate infection. your character can die if too close for too long. they all look veiny up close. and they all have that color as this video has. and they are all nearly invincible. the only way to prevent it is to go back in time to warn everyone, but the paradox is that the ones who warn people start the infection by bringing it with them.
