Good seeing the old Blackpool trams. If you look on you tube for Blackpool trams you can see the tramtown museum.

JUST BEAUTIFUL. DON'T UNDERSTAND WHY THERE'S NOT STREETCARS IN EVERY CITY ???????
@josephbennett3482

The invention of buses is what made streetcars obsolete because buses can go anywhere but streetcars can't because they have a fixed route due to rails , with a streetcar you can't just divert them onto another road if something happens the entire line would have to stop. Also it's super costly to build and maintain streetcar lines and the streetcars themselves , it's not worth doing in modern times because there are transit buses to take commuters where they need to go or people can use Uber or taxi's.

@@josephbennett3482 THERE ARE MANY CITIES THROUGHOUT THE WORLD THAT STILL USE STREET CARS. JUST YOUR OPINION.

@@josephbennett3482 Nope. Busses did not make streetcars obsolete at all. Most places outside the US merely continued to upgrade their streetcars until they turned into metros and S-bahns. This is, for example, how Tokyo got it's outstanding and gargantuan metro network. Streetcar line after streetcar line got converted into a metro/subway line and now you can go anywhere in Tokyo on a clean, modern, electric train. In the US, we bought the hype of "superhighways" and plunked billions and billions of mostly Federal taxpayer money into this new gadgebahn. They were supposed to "solve traffic once and for all", doncha know 🤣🤣🤣🤣 They didn't. It turns out that increasing capacity in one part of a continuous system merely squeezes the balloon and creates crazy congestion in other places in the system. Long story short after 80 years of continuing to throw good money after bad we've finally realized that more highways = more congestion. Also, you need to pave entire cities to create parking for literally all those vehicles. You need eight parking spaces for each and every vehicle at all the destinations that that vehicle might visit! So now we're trying to go back to trains. But since we have surrendered all the streetcar and intercity rights of way, building these costs 5x more than the equivalent systems cost in other countries. Well, at least we're moving in the correct direction now!

I love this. It's a great video. I've travelled on both lines and they are brilliant. I've not seen the open tram car before in SF. I didn't realise they were from Blackpool in Lancashire. I did travel on one of those way, way long ago. It's amazing to see them still in use but in the USA.

It's unfortunate there's no way to really make a double deck balloon car work in SF. Blackpool did have single deck versions though, right?

The Muni heritage lines actually reminds me of the streetcar system in Hiroshima, the Hiroshima Electric Railway (affectionately called "Hiroden" by locals). They own quite a few old trams from Europe and from across Japan, including 2 of their own units which survived the atomic bombing of Hiroshima on August 6, 1945. Those units, numbered 651 and 652, still run today, and many streetcar aficionados try to get a ride on one or both trams.

They are planning to create a loop halfway down Market St so they can run extra trains during the busy corridor. Should be started by 2025.

@@TohaBgood2 haha I read it on the better market st plan and the subsequent news articles that followed. Sad news though, they dropped it because it got too expensive. That actually lost them a grant which forced them to remove the elevated bike lanes as well. So better market street is now basically just replacing some infrastructure and replacing the street but no actual changes will be made to the physical layout of the street.

A question ......... why do the PCC cars make that squealing noise when making those curves and the other trolley cars don't make such a loud noise and is there noise complaints from the people living right next to those tight curves in the city ?

PCC number 1040 was the last PCC type trolley built in America in 1952. I wonder if Barbara Eden rode on it when she and her family were still living in San Francisco. 😊
