I have to admit, I seriously underestimated how popular the build video for this Tamiya M16 Halftrack was going to be, so first up, thank you for everyone who has joined in the fun and entered the competition from that video! It’s been epic. Time is running out though, so if you want to join in be sure to check it out for details.
But the question is now, would a decent paint job and weathering treatment elevate this nearly 50 year old vintage model from looking like a toy to looking like a battle worn work horse?
Join me as I take you through the steps I took to paint and weather this model that has been built out of the box!
Tamiya cash grab or Masterstroke ? I think the answer is pretty clear.

Awesome finish , you really showed what a good finish can do on a old kit.. Not every kit needs to be built to win a competition , some can be just built for fun!! I was thinking about your chipping with Tamiya paint and maybe a few drops of their retarder would help with the "stickiness" . Can't wait to see that tiger.

One thing I LOVE about Tamiya is that they re-issue their old kits and don't charge outrageous prices for them. Round2 is pumping out old kits and charging between $32 to $45 for some of them. Some are low parts count curbsides that I wouldn't pay $20 for.

Dude you ain’t lyin. These things were 40 plus dollars to find them. My hobby shop had 24 bucks on the reissue. That is cool. There’s a Salvation Army by me, and there is a real IGNORANT ASS lady that works there. Overpricing so much shit. She had 15 dollars on used nerf guns that were across the street for 12.99. Used Converse for 35 dollars. Anyway, they got model kits in. I look at em and she’s got 19.99 on USED KITS, missing instructions, half built. I told that lady it worth more then 5 bucks, oh NO NO that’s the price go up the street and buy the kit I saw for 25-30 bucks brand new cause evidently the guy at the Hobby Shop who’s been in business for 40 years don’t know how to price things….but she does. Anyway, yes, these are well priced. Sorry for my rant.

That is one of the best weathered armour models I have ever seen. I only got my APC version of these Tamiya Half Tracks in December, after pre-ordering in May 2023. I can tell you that in that version, the instructions tell you to put the large star decal onto the bonnet, with the stars point facing the windscreen. Just as in the WW2 photo in your video.
@workbenchhobbies4316
@workbenchhobbies4316 4 ай бұрын
Interesting 🤔 I wonder why Tamiya changed that? The APC version is an earlier release. They might have been working on an m16 version in a museum, and they had it wrong there? Interesting observation. Thanks for sharing 🍺🙏

@@workbenchhobbies4316 Its funny that all three kits box art shows the star the right way round. I downloaded the instructions for the mortar carrier and AA gun versions. Mortar carrier instructions are correct. But bizarrely, the AA gun version instructions show the star the wrong way round. Plus the pictures of the model and box art recreation on those instructions show it the right way. They clearly got it wrong on the painting and decal placement guide part of the instructions.

@@workbenchhobbies4316 No worries, it shows that you are still a human ;-). In earnest, it is very nice video, and the M3 just looks great. The point about softening the decals is an important detail: I am using 2 different decal softener (either Revell Decal Soft or Mr. Mark Softener Neo) to apply the decals, but I am still not happy how the they perform on surfaces with grooves or bolts (english tanks!). Not much softening ( = melting) happening, despite a very liberal application. Not sure if I am just expecting too much.

Different manufacturers decals respond differently to different softeners, so don't beat yourself up. Applying decals is my least favourite thing to do!! And also ensure you have a nice glossed varnished surface before you put your decal down, that will help you alot.

I'm going the full hog, though, and have got the new Eduard photo etch sets for the M16 and M3a2 plus some MJ miniatures halftrack resin sets and a shed load of empty brass .50 cal shells plus resin links. But I don't have the airbrush and Im here working 40+ hours a week, exercising daily and trying to maintain a healthy relationship with my girlfriend. I'm satisfied making a presentable representation that I consider highly detailed. My theory is that my AFVs have either just been issued to their crews and are getting ready for that first patrol or they have just returned from the repair shop and were run though the tank wash. Your videos give some good tips and fun ideas that make my details even more noticeable.

A good paint- and weathering-job makes 80-90% of the final appearance of a scale model. Correct and fine details really just take a backseat. One can clearly see the model is outdated in its details but it still looks really good due to the painting and weathering! 😃👍

Interesting take on the varnish/lacquer question/ issues. I remember when I bought a clear semi-gloss lacquer way after I had build the tamiya pz.4, the m4 Sherman, the bulldog and the tiger and when I applied the lacquer it already had the decals on them. When I was applying it to my pz.4, I applied it with such a force that the lacquer or my brush rather ripped one of the German crosses and the paint right of the tank 😭🤣so I applied it very delicately and definitely learned the lesson. But I still think that one should rather apply the lacquer at the very end. Even after applying the decals because I think that the lacquer would protect it if it were for some reason the model would become wet 🤷🏻‍♂️ that’s my reason
@workbenchhobbies4316
@workbenchhobbies4316 4 ай бұрын
They there. Thanks for sharing your experiences. Applying a varnish prior to applying the decals will certainly help the decals settle on the model, and you should always seal the decals with a varnish. If you are blowing the decals off I’d suggest you might want to dial the air pressure back…but varnish before decals will help with a lot of those issues. 💪🙏🍺

Greetings From Detroit! Wow- really enjoyed part 2 as much as part 1, I subscribed to your channel immediately after seeing your M16?build- you must be delighted with the VIEWS! As mentioned in a prior comment- I just FINISHED my original 1976 M16 in Winter Whitewash camouflage, it’s one of my top 5 builds I’d say. I had noted Prior to my build- that NO ONE- had done a Tamiya M16 build In Full. Not one. Yours was outstanding, not BECAUSE it was the only one- it is your concise, clear speaking voice and instructions/thought process for the build. The editing, video quality, are simply among the finest I’ve seen on KZbin. Period: And I have watched HUNDREDS. Many of us “older chaps” do not have the vision, dexterity, nor see the actual NEED for “a ton of photo-etch” or fiddling around with “link in link” track for armor. The vinyl track was no issue- (good comeback on that!)- nor is it with other high quality vinyl tracks. CA glue takes care of All track sag/tension. I was delighted to find that my evolution in weathering is up to snuff: oils, pin washes, acrylic washes- chipping (when needed) etc. for Most of us , the joy is IN the painting & weathering (and learning WHEN to “stop”! These older kits are affordable to more people- bring joy and achievement. Hah! It’s funny- for us in the Northern Hemisphere, or prime model building times- as youngsters OR elders was (is) in the winter months: We had SUMMERS off from school- outside continuously unless pouring rain. Cheers, and Thank You- I look forward to going back through your prior builds and seeing the new ones. Wishing you well from Detroit. JW

All you need to do for decals is dab a drop of floor wax or acrylic gloss varnish on the model where decal is going just before applying it. It's just enough to stop silvering and helps adhesion.

Another great video Clayton. I'm not surprised the original video gained so many views - I reckon three's a niche for you to showcase more advanced techniques like you've shown here on "classic" models that lots of people know from building as kids or revisiting as older modellers. Perhaps the Tamiya Bradley, Jagdpanther, or the Dragon King Tiger next?

I think people appreciate the out of box philosophy too. It’s been a bit of a light bulb moment💡 In saying that, I’m still going to build my models the way I’d like to see them, but will 100% do more of these vintage builds in the future. Great suggestions too by the way, but I have about 6 months worth of ‘scheduled builds lined up… So many models so little time! 🫣 Appreciate your suggestions 🙏

Beautiful work Clayton, these half tracks look so cool. I hope all the viewers and commenter's on the giveaway stay and subscribe!! Thinking aloud here - one thing I've been pondering (and not practicing or trying🙄) is how to get some of the tonal variations in panels using a hairy stick. I know black basing techniques would help, but it's the lighter tones you apply with the airbrush after the base layer I'm thinking about. Maybe OPR is the way to go in that regard??

Hi Andy, it is not an actual colour pigment, it is just a texture and the colour is coming from the enamel paint I am putting in it. I think there are only two types they produce - a coarse and a fine. You would be best to check out their website. There is a bonus code in the show notes if you wanted to give it a try.
