I couldn't agree more, you really need a classic (Massey) combine in your inventory and your channel, 😉

Smashing repairs you and your brother made. Do on the next video. Looks like Clarence may look for an old combine too.

I think as much as I luv big kit tbh you can’t beat the oldskool machines easily fixed on farm no computer plug in needed in an uncertain world we should maybe use more old kit !!!!

Getting this old girl ready for harvesting, demanded many hours of patience and repair skills. It must have been difficult to find time amidst all the other chores that await attention on a busy dairy/tillage farm. Well done to ye and we look forward to seeing her in action and hopefully, without any hitches. 🤞

Great to see the old girl getting ready for work. Look forward very much to seeing it working again. Seeing these combines takes me right back to my boyhood, when they were very much state of the art.

Really good video, thoroughly enjoyed it. Your explanation of how a combine works, to a non farming type was most enjoyable. I was confident you had the skills to tackle both tasks, but was surprised about your brother completing the first task. Bit of a dark horse that one !! Looking forward to seeing it in action.

Back in the day we had a 415 and it fell upon me to have to push the unloading auger out as it was a 1969 model with no ram to push it out and back in. You had to climb on a red hot engine cover work your way to the back, lift the latch, then push it out and get yer foot on the bracket where the ram should have been to push it out fully, then try not to fall off and break yer neck.

Great video an a crackin repair job on the channel for the cross auger 👌 notice you have the rear wheel weights on and even then they were still a bit light on the back end when cutting downhill 🙄 did the 400 have the automatic ground following table on it our Ferguson combine did an it was I think a 525 which with the extra beater at the back you had to hit reverse pretty sharply or the straw wound round it 🙄🤬🤬

Great video again, thank you. Well done keeping the 400 going. If any of you are interested in seeing some old style combines in regular action, put ZMAJ 780 into the KZbin search engine. MF sold the design of the old MF 780 Special to a company in then Yugoslavia. Lots of old combines of that design still working in Eastern Europe, including baggers. One lovely video has two 780S baggers working with a later ZMAJ tanker model in a large corn field.

We use to run an old Massey Ferguson 500 in the late 70’s did about 70 acres for several years and the last two years we owned it 15 acres of barley before moving it on after harvest in 1981 to another farm in 1982. Very reliable. Only break down we had was the main idler pulley adjuster bearings on the main combine drive. These adjust the main drive belt tension. Bearings disintegrated in the pulley in a good crop of wheat, took day to source new bearings and half day to fit. Needed a new belt also which we got second hand due to cost. I think spares for your 400 will be the main problem. Might be worth getting another 400 or upgrading to a newer machine due to spare part situation.

We used to run a claas mercury combine. About the same vintage. It was certainly more of a challenge keeping it going than doing the combining. That said all you needed to fix a 1960's German combine was a 19 mm spanner and patience. Oh and a welder.

Interesting stuff young man. Some clever engineering to suss out how to cut, thresh and clean the grain. The fan to blow off chaff is a good example of such thoughts. I wonder how many prototypes were built before they found a reliable system? Top stuff and a great repair job too.

I suppose that it all began back hundreds of years ago with the perfecting of the basic manually driven winnowing machine. The sheafs were manually threshed on a floor using flails. The threshed grain and chaff was then fed in to the top of the winnower. It fell down through a series of shaking sieves. A fan blew the lighter chaff from the heavier grain as it dropped onto a collection pan and removed for storing. Next came the large threshing mill. A spinning drum threshed the grain and chaff from the straw as the sheafs were fed in at the top. The winnowing action similar to the old winnower separated the grain from the chaff and the grain was again sieved via a circular slow turning sieve to separate large grain from small grain and any weed seed. The large quality grain ended up in the bagger section before dropping into large jute sacks. The combine was the next development with the cutting, threshing and collecting of the grain in a large grain bin that is mounted on the combine. As the name suggests, it combines all the actions.

One of the features of some MF combines that I think was unique on the straw walker grain separation side, apart from the dual action separation [a device at the very back that used centrifugal force to separate any remaining grains by accelerating the straw round a bend before expelling it], was that the walkers were significantly wider than the threshing drum and beater cylinder behind it. This thins the straw out into a less dense layer and combined with a long throw on the walkers and relatively high steps from one section to another, made for superb performance [for the time] with a more compact overall machine design.

Don’t forget the 625 and 625 SuperII, which I bought used and with a 14ft Power Flow table. The 625 had three layers of sieves in a cascade and open bottom straw walkers plus, of course, double action separation and a 105 degree wrap concave with high inertia threshing drum. That is a weighty drum with unusual cast iron dividers to add mass for a flywheel effect to smooth out any power consumption peaks.
