You're absolutely 100% correct. The vintage gear was built like a brick shithouse. Look after it and it will last your lifetime and your kids lifetime and probably their kids. I have in my collection several radios that are 100 years old or close to it all still functional.

A friend of mine had an old JVC Dolby Pro-Logic receiver which had a wonderful sounding Super Class-A output stage for the front left and right channels. It used Toshiba darlington audio transistors which, if I remember right, were driven at around 300 volts. He only used it as a stereo receiver and nothing else. One day a power surge damaged the receiver causing it not to play any audio anymore, and I traced the problem back to a couple of fusible resistors in the preamp stage, which sadly are unobtanium...

Just found this in the garbage on a tv stand in the alley. I'm pretty excited considering I also have a Concept 16.5 from when I graduated a long time ago. And I found some SpeakerLabs from Washington that are worth about 300 bucks for free at a garage sale. Madness....

McIntosh commands even much more. I have 2 MC2105 amplifiers that command over $1500 a pice when they have new glass. New glass is still available. They are strictly 100watt amps no preamps or tuners. They were originally made in the mid 1960s. The build quality is point to point and they are bullet proof as good equipment from that era. I drive them with a MC 220 preamp.Though they are stereo amps, I run them as mono blocks. As you said, pure 100 Watts. Very very low high frequency distortion. Good bands and good recorded music sound amazing. Badly recorded bands and music sound dreadful. It does not hide mistakes. Great video.

Great stuff! Amazingly complex internals in a lot of these old system. I can see why people want these old amplifiers though - they give a richer sound etc, same reason people like tubes as well. When you first took the lid off their I said 'OMG @ the size of that central capacitor', then I realised it was a transformer lol. The actual caps are still pretty large - what rating in uF or F are they?
@12voltvids9 жыл бұрын
No they are still uF. The voltage is quite high on these units, and it is a split supply, as it is a class B amplifier. So each side is probably 60 or so volts.

My Iwatsu 40MHz that is on my bench I bought in 1984 the year I entered the consumer repair business after leaving the Sony corp where I had worked as a betamax tech for a year. When I worked for Sony they supplied all the tools, when I went to an independent shop I had to supply all my own tools and test equipment. I have another older HP scope in my garage that is full of vacuum tubes, and yes it still works great too.

In addition , when I was looking at the product bulletin for the Teac V909RX, they indicated that 2-each power supply capacitors have a SM for tolerance , 1000mfd,25vdc,sm 2200mfd,25vdc,am All the other are 20%. What is SM and should or do they need to be replaced along with the others on the power supply board Thanks Bernard

Just had a quick question about the receiver . My receiver is the exact same as the one you are servicing . I notice when I’ve been running my receiver for a few hours , the right side of the receiver is a bit warmer than the left side . It sounds great , but I was wondering if this is something happening in the unit , or is it normal ? If it’s not , what kind of test should I run to determine probable cause ? Thank in advance , Bernard

I purchased online a recap restoration kit for my SA775, but the filter capacitors in the kit were not applicable for my SA775, They were the right specs, except for the solder lugs. The replacement caps were snap in caps instead of solder lugs . The original caps have at least 7 wires soldered on one of its solder points . With snap in caps , it’s really not very applicable to use in place of originals, plus the replacement caps were half the size of originals (Nippon Chemicon) What’s your take on this issue . Thanks

Good evening I have a question regarding this receiver, I recently purchased 4 each vintage Advent Loudspeakers. 8 ohms each cabinet. On some channels audio techs configure stacking 2-each of the 8 ohm advents in parallel making both units a 4 ohm load to the right channel and the same for the left channel . In an earlier segment you mentioned it’s not wise to put such a low load on these vintage receivers because it could cause problems . Is it best to run each 8 ohm cabinet to its own individual speaker output on the SA7150 (A-speakers Left and Right, B-speakers Left and Right ) instead of only using A-speakers Left and Right at a 4 ohm load with 2-each 8 ohm speakers in parallel?
@12voltvids9 ай бұрын
What does it say on the back? If it says 8 ohm minimum then running it into a 4 ohms load is asking for trouble.

Good morning I have a capacitor question regarding the SA 7150 and SA775. The SA 7150 had originally 4-each 15000mfd@80vdc And SA775 has 2-each 15000mfd@63vdc. I’m trying to find replacement filter capacitors but having the worst luck due to availability. How high in MFD and voltage can I go on the 7150 and 775 without comprising my unit ? Secondly , do you happen to know what my VDC rail voltage and ripple current is on the 7150 and 775? Thanks again for all your guidance . Note : looking to use screw caps on SA775 instead of solder lugs … Thanks again Bernard
@12voltvids Жыл бұрын
You can always go higher in capacity and voltage. Won't hurt anything. The operating voltage is set by the transformer. Bigger uF means more reserve.

The vintage receivers will pop modern 🔊 speakers in flash . I had a set of jamo running off a sansui 771 and a couple times almost blew the 🔊 speakers

Any amp will pop speakers if you drive it into clipping.
@davidtillwach55425 жыл бұрын
@@12voltvids Yes but the power from the vintage stuff is way more rated than today's stuff . My Onkyo Tx-nr676 is no way as powerful and some of the lower wattage sansui stuff. But the vintage stuff is mostly two channel stereo .unless your talking quadphonic ,then it's four channel sound . Some newer receivers are 9.2
@SanAntonioNews7811 ай бұрын
I know in the 70s there was a power war in terms of watts with receivers and everyone trying to out perform each other. But did you really need 150w per channel? My dad had a Pionner sx 880 with 60 wpc and that thing was loud!!
@12voltvids11 ай бұрын
There is a difference between loudness and headroom. Headroom means that the amplifier has sufficent reserve power so it will never clip. If all you listen to is highly compressed rock or rap then everything is going to sound the same. Throw on some jazz or classical with real dynamics and then let's talk about reserve power.

@12voltvids Жыл бұрын
Those will work. You can always go up in voltage. No need for 105 as they are just 60hz filters but it won't hurt. 105 are needed for switching power supply. Again won't hurt except your wallet.

Thanks for quick reply . I’m no audio technician, but learning slowly as I move along the vintage trail . If these are large filter capacitors (15000mfd) for power supply , do they need to be audio grade or can a general purpose filter capacitor , like Nichicon , Rubycon suffice ? Also , is ESR rating important to these capacitors ? Thanks again for all the helpful tips , Bernard

Some have dropped in value because ebay got flooded with these things. Once people seen what others are willing to pay for this old stuff.

Old gear is valuable to many collectors. You should see what I pay for broken antique radios that need full restorations. I have an old Macontosh mac1500 and a sansui 9090db in my collection. The 9090 is worth a small fortune. If it wasn't so bloody heavy I would drag it down to the bench to service as it needs service. All the controls and switches need looking at.

Greeting I also have the Toshiba SA775 receiver . Wanting to also change out filter capacitors due to age . 2-each wired in series with each other to DC rectifier. They are 15000 mfd, 63VDC, 85 deg C just like the SA7150. I know these units are used to filter ripple voltage and current making power more smoother and straight . You stated I could go up in capacitance and or voltage . I’ll probably stay at same capacitance , but move the voltage to 80 VDC . The caps are close to large transformer. With that said can I stay at 85degs C spec as designed or should I move to 105degs C I think my frequency across the DC is 120hz , on the AC side before it hits the transformer is 60 hz. I’m limited to space as well . Higher temp caps are generally larger . But I think I can get by with 50 mm x 100 mm The Nichicon general purpose cap is 50 mm x 100 , 15000 mfd, 80VDC, 2000 hrs life , 6.4 ripple @120 hz. Screw terminal, ESR 17.6 Mohms. My rail voltage on the receiver is 54 Volts at the transformer , I’m sure after it goes through the two caps it’s much higher . Do you think the caps I’ve listed will be a good fit for the SA775? They cost roughly 41 US dollars . Thanks Bernard

+Audioquest56 have never used Deoxit, only Nutrol. The old Nutrol is superior to the new stuff. I found an old can at work in the garbage and fished it out. Old stock (almost a full can) from back in the 70's. Back then it has the old skull and crossbones on the can, so you know it will be good stuff. The new stuff is alcohol based like all the cleaners, with a little bit of oil. It is food equipment safe now. Not the old stuff, no way.

Sure is. Thats the limit the owner put on it. Not everyone changes every capacitor. Actually it's the amateurs and crooks that do. I guess if you are a good salesman you can blow sugar up your customers ass and tell them how wonderful it will sound. That only works with the uneducated. Those that know won't buy in. About 10 years ago a customer brought me an amp to recap and after hearing it he brought it back to have the old caps put back in because he did not like the new sharp as a needle sound. He was used to and performed the sound the original caps provided. I did leave a few in the low voltage regulator circuit (they measured bad esr) but all the coupling caps went back in and he loved the sound. New caps, even the audio grade, have totally different characters than vintage. They might spec the same but due to the chemicals used in the electrolytic they sound different. Subtle but different and someone with a good ear can hear this.

I fix plenty of vintage audio, however I do not rip people off like many by changing unnecessary parts. My clients all want things fixed on a budget. They tell me exactly what they want done because in many cases they are going to sell the unit and they obviously don't want to pay me more than they are going to get for the unit. I troubleshoot to the problem and nothing more. Sorry if you don't agree but that is the way I work. This is why I have so many repeat clients because they know that they will get their unit repaired for 60 bucks not 360.
