VINTAGE TOUR Portable Hand Held Mixers: Small Appliances

I took some of the vintage portable hand mixers down from the shelves to share with a closer look. Sunbeam, General Electric, Westinghouse, Hamilton-Beach, Dormeyer and others are represented in this survey of hand held portable mixers.
Electric hand mixers have been around since the 1920's, but really came into use by the average households in large numbers in the 1950's. A handy tool in any kitchen, these appliances mix cake batter, cookie dough, egg whites, whipping cream, potatoes, and any number of other things.

Very nice collection! I'm impressed that these mixers from about 80 years ago still work well. If only stuff made in the current era would hold up as well. I'm so frustrated with all the obsolete junk from most manufacturers these days that breaks or wears out very quickly.

Hi Kev!!! What a perfect way to wake up in the morning with coffee and a vintage mixer tour! This was terrific and a great trip down memory lane! My Mom and Gram both had hand mixers when I was growing up but we never had a stand mixer. I can’t remember which type but from looking at the video I believe they were Hamilton Beach... I can remember when it was someone’s birthday and my mom mixing away in the kitchen and she would always have it plugged into her Westinghouse Terrace Top stove! Yup, I had one growing up! Not sure if I told you that? Forgive me if I did. It was sooooo awesome and makes me smile when I see the videos of yours! Moms was a specialty color from 1963 and it was a brown color but didn’t have the backsplash with the light as yours does. So cool how it just looks built in. She would always use the socket on it to plug in her hand mixer... just the sound of that oven door opening makes me smile! Thanks for all the memories Kevin! Hi Jeff! Wow you grew up with a Terrace Top! I know the model you are referring to and I have one in the collection that is a gold color. Someday it will make it's way into the kitchen studio! The one I have at the house with the lighted backsplash is from 1963. Many people didn't have stand mixers. They either didn't need one or didn't have room for one. A good hand mixer could do a lot of the regular mixing jobs. Glad you liked the video!! Stay well and strong!!!

We had the white atomic GE. I believe my parents got it as a wedding gift in 1960. It lived well into the mid-90s. I have a KitchenAid stand mixer and a Cuisinart hand mixer. I prefer the hand mixer. I feel like I have greater control and I don’t need to stop and scrape down the bowl nearly so often. But I’ll tell you what, that KitchenAid is worth its weight in gold at Christmas when I make a double batch of my family’s lebkuchen recipe.

Hi Adam! Sounds like the GE mixer your parents got had a good long life! The hand mixers are more convenient for many things, but I agree that a good, strong, sturdy stand mixer like your KA is priceless when doing the big jobs or working with heavy dough. I love vintage appliances. A few months ago I thrifted a beautiful Sunbeam Mixmaster stand mixer in chrome. And it was only 11.00. Yesterday I thrifted a chrome Hamilton Beach Scoville hand mixer. This was only 2.99! They look so adorable displayed together. Cute chrome twins.

Hi Kevin A few dates The Sunbeam Mixmaster Junior came out in white in 1952, Colors in 1955 The yellow Sunbeam HM is about 1960-62, Hamilton Beach Mixettes like the first one came out in 48, With the Model G stand mixer, and yes Hamilton Beach did make many Sears mixers starting in 1958 after Birtman sold out to Whirlpool and spun the mixers off to HB Before that Birtman made their vacuums and mixers and blenders,

I have the same one in "Harvest Gold", my sister got it for a wedding present in 1979. The marriage ended after 10 years, but the mixer is going strong for 40 years.

This is one of the best channels I have found for old kitchen appliances. You can never fail to shine the light on how things used to be before the disposable tech age. The recipes are great too. I only have a few kitchen appliances. I prefer the mixers most so far. I collect vacuums (mainly vintage Electroluxes), as well. (And typewriters, although that collection is paused for now since I have no space for any more of them.) Anyways, 1968 Sunbeam Mixmaster Stand Mixer MMB---Chrome, steel bowls, no dough hooks as standard. 175 watts. The base, handle front, juicer pin, portable switch, and bottom frame all metal. Most inner components and gears are all metal. Heavy, better for keeping stuff down like choco-chips in cookie batter. 12 Speeds. Bakelite platter. 1974 Sunbeam Mixmaster Stand Mixer model MMA---White, clear glass bowls, dough hooks as standard. 200 watts. The handle front, juicer pin, portable switch, and bottom frame are all metal. 12 speeds. Most inner components are metal, yet less than the former one. Heavy yet lighter than the former. It's a tradeoff. 198X Hamilton Beach Scoville Hand mixer model 97-1. (Unknown power level) Brown and tan. Beaters only as standard. Very good for whipping, the beaters spin very fast. Also, all plastic. The inner gears are metal though, as well as the bushings. Very light. 1976-68 Oster Osterizer Imperial Dual-Cycle Pulse*Matic 16. (Unknown power level). Avocado and chrome. Glass jar with removable bottom blade assembly (made of bakelite). It cycles on and off when set to the cycling mode. Very heavy. 8 speeds. Very quiet.

Hi Richard! Glad you enjoy the videos. Looks like you have a nice collection of vintage appliances, and a couple of really good Sunbeam Mixmasters. When we start getting to around 1980 you see more and more plastic parts and designs that were not intended to last a long time and people would throw away and buy new every few years. When they started making more products outside of the US, weight became an issue because things had to be shipped a long distance, so things got even lighter and thinner. Thank you for your efforts. I enjoy your segments thoroughly. The only mixer I have ever had is a hand me down from my great aunt. She purchased it in 1960 from Garrisons Hardware Store in Corning, Ohio. It is a GE model and still works perfectly. I keep it in the original box when not in use.

I have the yellow GE and then another GE I think from the 70s. It was new old stock. My mom had a GE stand mixer but used the mixer as a hand mixer. I'd love to have a 50s Kitchen Aid .

GE made the model 15 from 1956 until 1960. The began making it again around 1970 in then popular household colors and was usually found in discount stores.

Howdy! We have the Sunbeam Junior in copper. It works great, and is used to make Chart House Blue Cheese Dressing. We have an original recipe card from the San Fransisco location. Our around the corner here in Palm Springs have the same recipe from a different location for the restaurant.

Then I think immediately after, KitchenAid added a Hand Mixer to their line of Small Appliances right after the stand mixer.

My mom had the mixer you showed starting at 15:04 and it lasted for quite a long time but I seem to remember it had taken a tumble off the counter several times and toward the end had a broken case. I have the exact chrome Dormy mixer you showed. It was an Ebay purchase. When I got it the beaters tended to clink off each other as they didn't quite line up properly with each other. Apparently one of the beaters had jumped a tooth on the drive gear and I was able to take it apart and set it where it was supposed to be and lubricate the motor and drive gear while I had it apart. Now it's good to go for another 60+ years.

Those 3 GEs in the same style are great and I have the white one. The Westinghouse models... I never see them around. The Dormeys are powerful . It was definitely a time of great style compared to what is made today.

My Sunbeam is still in the (somewhat battered) box from 1998. I bought it new when I purchased my co-op apartment. It still works great and is pretty heavy. I don't have room for a stand mixer. In fact my apartment is so small that when I want to bake I have to take out all of the pots and pans I store inside the stove. I think I paid $19 for it, I remember buying all of my small appliances at Woolworths. I bought a Proctor Silex coffee maker ( now on my second one), an Oster blender (glass not plastic), a Toast Master 2 slice toaster and none of them cost over $20. This was in 1998. It might have been the year that Woolworths went out of business.

I found your video to be incredibly interesting. I particularly liked your Sunbeam Junior hand held. I have an original Australian made Sunbeam Beater-Mix model 32371. Cast metal with black Bakelite handle. I just used it to make a chocolate cake. It's never been serviced nor has it ever needed to be repaired. It is totally original in every way. I've had it for years and it is my most favourite mixer. I also have a Sunbeam cafe series II stand mixer that I love very much. Who wouldn't love a stand mixer that can whip a minimum of just one egg white. Love Sunbeam, but I'm not a big fan of the more modern mixers. Great video. Cheers.

We had a white version of the George Jetson GE hand mixer. It also had a hole in the front grill you could attach a knife sharpener to it. You would take the mixer blades off and set the mixer on the table. I remember it had little rubber bars on the bottom that allowed it to rest flat on the table. He would then turn it on high and the Grindstone would turn and you can sharpen your knives.

Yes I’ve always loved avocado. I have made a few road trips to pick them up. My stove is probably my most prized possession. Along with my Maytag. 806 set. My stove is a Frigidaire twin 30 custom deluxe all in one double oven. I have the original paperwork with it also from 1972. I made a 3 1/2 hour one-way trip to get it. Which I know is nothing compared to A lot of other AW members. But it works great and we always have Thanksgiving at my house so it gets put to good use regularly. I also have an antique copper clad wood cookstove that I use every winter for heat/cooking. Most of the Thanksgiving dinner is cooked on it but the electric stove gets used also.

I absolutely love the countertops you put in your studio kitchen. I remember from a previous video I ask about them and I believe the color is called delightful Jayde. I believe Home Depot has it. Very nice video and love those hand mixers. My late mother had I think a Sunbeam hand mixer (in white) but in I think the 90's had to replace and got another one where the beaters clipped to the side, forget who made it but it did the job nicely. She also had an old sunbeam mixmaster stand mixer from when she got married to my late father in 1954, it was the white/black model and she wore that old mixer out in the 70's and bought I believe a basic white new one that was not as good before getting the KitchenAid tilt head mixer. I forget who has it now (one of my 3 older sisters). I of course have the late 60's turquoise version of the Sunbeam in my home and have my late maternal grandmother's sunbeam hand mixer, originally in the box when I got it in the early 90's as once she was through with it, she'd clean it good and put it away in its box. If my mother was correct, it was purchased in 1969 but matched the version you show where you have it in pink and in white. I do use that one periodically when necessary. Anyway, fun to see these!

I worked as buyer in the sixties in a large dept. store in Small Appliances, People would actually bring back there not working mixers from the thirties and say they bought it last month, we had to take them back, and give them a new Sunbeam hand mixers believe it or not they still worked.

Picked up a 1953 Sunbeam Mixmaster Junior today. The date is stamped on the motor bearing plate inside. It runs fine, but smells like an old toy train set.

Fantastic video! Still have (and use) my mom's hand-held (non electric) mixer/whisk. Great for whipping cream! Also use her avacado green GE electric hand model. Would love to see a video on cake carriers or chafing dishes (of which I have just a few)! ;)

I wish I had known you years ago. I would have gotten you down to my area and took you to hardware store that started in 1938. Well they never sold everything they bought! It would just sit on the Shelf or it would be in Warehouse they never change the price on it. They had Electrolux they had mixers they had everything. And the biggest laugh I ever got was I went in there and then this was in I want to see 1994 and I found a 25 inch Zenith color TV with the manual tuner for for close to $800 for little over but that's back when color televisions were brand new it was like a 1968. My friend work with me in that was his parents store. His brother ran a air conditioning business out of it that was a good business but his mom and dad ran the store anyway and collect Social Security and they kept buying stuff and putting out this was even after Walmart no one bought from them. And his dad died and his mom just kept running the store she mostly netted at the store. She finally passed away sitting behind the cash register. his brother decided to go to business with another man. And instead of trying to get rid of all the stuff that they pushed all of it into a hole and buried the building. I think he could have been Rich if they had an auction. because there was stuff we're back from because there was stuff we're back from the 1938. All inboxes all with price tags never used. you would have been like a kid in a candy store I know he had an electric stove an electric dryer washer firm at least every year. well once again you put an extremely good video on take care Kevin and Ralph

Hi Beryl! Wow! What a story about that hardware store! I'm sure I would have gone crazy in there with all that old, original stock. Sounds like they didn't do much business! But I've noticed there are still stores like that in small towns where they don't turn over a lot of merchandise and I've seen price tags so old they are faded and you can't even see the price anymore! Well, I guess there a lot of buried treasures where that store once stood! Thanks so much!!

All in all over the years they used to a big business but they never want to run out of stock. And then came Walmart and they were retired. They just didn't want to give up. And nobody cared they just kept buying anyway! The family owned the local bank at that time. And he was a plumber and a roofer and his son ran an air conditioning business. And the mom always ran the store and she just wouldn't give up. If I ever find some pictures of it I'll see if I can get you some pictures of the store it had all the old light fixtures old ceiling fans it looked just about the way it did when it opened

Today I got a 1960's avacado GE Jetsons hand mixer from Goodwill for $3. In decent shape, but no beaters though. That probably explains the low price and why it was still there. Hopefully I can find some compatible beaters without wasting too much time.

Hi Mike - I often see "orphan beaters" at thrift shops, etc. Those were pretty popular mixers, hopefully you'll come across a set of beaters for them. Thanks!

Hi Kevin. I find it interesting that a lot of today's hand mixers are coming with a single balloon whisk attachment for whipping cream and beating egg whites and I question whether that's really necessary when the two standard beaters have worked fine for decades. I find a whisk tends to sling the egg whites a little more and it's all so flimsy and I'm actually working harder to hold the mixer up.

Hi Robert - I've notice the same thing and don't understand how the single whisk does a better job than two beaters. It may just be an inexpensive feature they could include to justify the higher cost of the mixer. Thanks!

Hi Kevin! I have a 1975 avocado green Sunbeam, but the beaters have rust on them. I have a motto that if I can't clean it, it can't be cleaned, but I cannot get that rust off! Do you know if the beaters are interchangable from year to year or brand to brand? Or if there is a way to get replacements? The mixer still works like a champ and I would hate to have to get a new one for the beaters. As always, I love your videos and appreciate your knowledge on all things vintage :)

Hi Elizabeth! That avocado Sunbeam sounds wonderful! Love the color! The beaters are NOT interchangeable between brands (Sunbeam, Hamilton Beach, GE, Westinghouse, etc. all had different beaters), but I think you'll find that the beaters from your mixer are identical to other Sunbeam mixers from that era. They didn't change the design of the beaters very often. I'm sure you could find a set online. Thanks!

Have you run across an Oster Kitchen Center? The mixer head separates from the motor and it has a blender, food processor, food grinder as well as several other attachments? I have one of these and it has been its weight in gold.

Hi Kevin, I have a GE 3 speed hand mixer model 30M47 and it's just like the one you talk about here in the video. It was passed down from my mother in law and it still works beautifully, but it needs a new cord and I don't know where to get one from, any ideas? Loved the video, it was way cool.

So, today I found a Sunbeam Mixmaster hand mixer in Almond with Brown trim. My research tells me it is from the 80s. Were the 80s mixers as good as the previous decade's, or was this the time when appliances quality began to shift down towards today's disposable appliances?

Hi BrownSuga66! Yes, that Mixmaster would be from the mid-late 80's. These mixers were not as strong as previous generations and they had mostly plastic bodies instead of metal. I think you will find the mixers from the 50's and 60's to be better built. Thanks!
