The ORS 87 Open Source Mic Project over at GroupDIY.com has really taken flight and this new tiny board version, designed by Duffy P. Weber at Hula Cow Studios is an advanced-build delight. And, it sounds great even without using premium parts.

The audio on this is spectacular easily on par with some of your more expensive mics you featured here prior.

Thank you! It has a nice smoothess through the 4-7k range that gives it more sense of detail and that really works here. It's the sum of pairing the right parts through a copious amount of trial and error, but this is a formula of transformer, capsule and circuit that can be repeated so I'm very stoked. Glad you dig it!

Crazy, right? How can it? I’ve come to see the BFL capsule as pretty legit and as far as that transformer goes, it’s wild when the price of stuff on Ali sometimes reflects just how much markup we are used to paying in the Western world.

Any suggestions for donor bodies? Would an M49 body work or is it an altogether different body dimension wise? Found one on Mic&Mod.

M49 body would be really nice. A lot more room inside the body to fit an even bigger transformer. We’ve been using these Aliexpress 103 style bodies that are 1/10th the price of that m49 though. It’s a whole mic but the guts a And capsule are crap so you just empty out the body (and you may need a capsule mount) but Duffy designed the boards to squeeze into one of these. a.aliexpress.com/_mOgraDm
