@MarkYoshimotoNemcoffКүн бұрын
Yeah, the saturation circuit is helping tame it and even dialed down it doesn’t get harsh and I’m wondering if there’s some help coming from whatever op amp they have in there. And great idea to demo it with the 87 and 416. That’s going to happen for sure!

Really interesting preamp. Seems like the goal was to take the Millenia/Grace Design ultra clean, Class-A, transformerless approach and add some versatility with the coloration of the Shape control. I do find these ultra clean preamps often have a certain "hardness" to them, maybe from the high speed of the slew rate. Btw, input impedance is a whopping 13.6 KOhms so it should work great with passive ribbon mics (especially with the option to add some Shape)
@MarkYoshimotoNemcoff2 күн бұрын
Very good points! The Grace sounds really hard to me, but there's something here with the Skulpter that's a little different even without the Shape circuit dialed in. They must have massaged the slew rate so that it's snappy AF, but it's not sterile.
@Hectagonist2 күн бұрын
@@MarkYoshimotoNemcoff I have a lot of experience with Millenia recording classical music and agree the Skulpter doesn't sound nearly as clinical. It's still not as smooth as the John Hardy stuff but considering the price and the versatility, the Skulpter is definitely now on my radar Closest thing I have is the discontinued Daking MicPre 500. Class A with a Jensen input transformer and variable HPF, clean, but not too fast and the Jensen adds some nice highs and upper mid. Fantastic pre for dynamics, especially the SM7B, but often too forward for condensers.
@MarkYoshimotoNemcoffКүн бұрын
@@Hectagonist Funny that you mention the Dakings. I had always felt the Daking stuff sounded a little more forward than I thought would work on voice over and instead would be something I'd be more likely to use miking a drum kit or a rock piano. Millennia all day on orchestral stuff, like you said, but it's not easy finding the right blend of clean and character for VO to get it to sit right in the pocket.
@MarkVO2 күн бұрын
Wow. Very nice bit of kit. Good hardware compressors almost always sound better to me than plugins. Really transparent. I wish the indicator was more clear, like maybe the top LEDs could go red which indicate the threshold, and the LEDs that indicate your audio level turn orange when they're affected by compression. It'd be a much clearer way of understanding how much compression is being applied. It sounded great, though. That saturation tool pushes your voice forward in exactly the way I'd want it to, though I'd maybe tone it back a bit for the YT video, though likely more forward if voicing spots + corporate narrations. Presumably you feed this into the MT48? Can you use the MT48 pres and bypass the Skulptor pre and just use the comp + saturation? Great video as always Mark. Hope you're doing well. Warmest regards, Mark.
@MarkYoshimotoNemcoff2 күн бұрын
Yo Mark! I’m doing great! Hope you are too. Thank you for asking. If they ever make a rack version of the Skulpter I bet they’d put in an insert point to do just that, but unfortunately there’s no way to bypass the pre to use just the Shape, Lo cut and compression. The pre actually sounds better to me than the MT-48, which I will have to compare on camera soon. It feels like heresy to say. It has a faster slew rate and feels a bit tough more immediate. There are so many nice preamps out there, but truly only a small fraction are suited for pro VO daily use and even a tinier number deliver next level results.

Wonder how the Arienne capsules would work in each mic
@MarkYoshimotoNemcoff2 күн бұрын
Right? You’d probably still have to apply a similar deemphasis EQ curve to the k87 capsule as they do internally on the real sphere to get the response flat but it would probably help give a little more depth to the sphere models.
@cowabungaw9958Күн бұрын

@MarkYoshimotoNemcoff2 күн бұрын
@@lukegowest Fantastic! I'm glad I could be of help. The 208 is more of an upgrade than a replacement to the RE20. Wonder if the cheapest could be at least a good body for a DIY-Project with the UTM47LB-PCB from UTM?
@MarkYoshimotoNemcoff3 күн бұрын
Possibly not. The UTM-47LB PCB’s were designed to fit in the slightly smaller sized generic 103-style body and not in a more accurately sized 103 body like this counterfeit. The issue would be how the top board, which is also the capsule deck, attaches with two screws to the bottom shell and it would be very difficult to do that with the smaller diameter of the 47-LB board and keep it stable inside the mic.

True, but here the exercise is to replace the FET circuit with something more modern, especially with the most popular quiet mic-use fets like the 305 and 5102 having been "end of life'd", and the big benefit is also that with the OpAmp, you don't have to manually bias each fet.

While the performance of the OPA Alice is impressive, the nearly -60dB k2 of the simple FET circuit is unhearable. I think that is reason no one really saw a need for improvement.
@MarkYoshimotoNemcoff4 күн бұрын
I think the impetus toward moving to an op amp has a lot more to do with how many of the lowest noise FETs like the J305 are obsolete and in limited, dwindling supply and the commercial consideration of automated manufacturing moving away from through hole components. So, it’s less of an indictment of the FET, but more about how it can be replaced in the design process with even higher fidelity.
