2 years late to this party, but I was fascinated with your demonstration of recording on a DVD-RAM disc on a Panasonic DMR-EZ47V. I bought two of the nearly identical model, DMR-EZ48VK in 2009 shortly after digital broadcasting went live in the USA. This model features a digital tuner that will receive all current digital channels available. They were not cheap; about $300 USD each at the time, but they have proven their worth over time as they still record DVDs splendidly. I don't think Panasonic makes this model anymore, but firmware updates are still available from Panasonic's Support site. DVD-RAM discs though have become as rare as hen's teeth.I guess the format didn't capture the public's fancy.
@sting64az3 жыл бұрын
Those Panasonic models as seen and yours as mine DMR-EZ48VK are so dependable. I also bought mine around spring of 2009 to be able to record digital broadcasting as well as using it to capture video from many video type formats of camcorders I have. I never till this day have used the DVD Ram discs nor never paid any attention to what those discs were at the time and all these years now till I seen this video hahaha. Now I might have to buy one or a few of those DVD Ram that are on auction just to have as a conversation piece and to use..

I'm old enough to remember having to use a "CVS" (Commercial Video Stabilizer) to clean up edits on 1-inch 3M-Scotch tapes. A 20 minute show took an entire weekend to edit, and we were happy if the end-product didn't trigger the horizontal sync to go nutz after each section edit. I also remember having to clean the video record heads constantly, and having to replace heads at a cost of about $500.00 per head, then do an alignment. I don't know how many times I yelled "track it" while watching local news switch into recorded segments. DVCAM took care of that!

The fun thing is that nowadays bluray or DVD burners for your computer still support DVD RAM. I found an unused shrink wrapped DVD RAM disc and Windows 11 asked whether I wanted to use the disc like a removable hard drive or as a DVD. If you choose the first it will format it and you have direct Access albeit being slow.

This unit has some special record modes. In particular VLP mode which is 10 hours on a T120...This is 40% more compressed than even EP mode on standard VCRs. It is not compatible with other VCRs in this mode.

I finally got a Panasonic DMR-EZ47V (2 years later) and MANNNNN I love this thing!!!! I came back here to see what DVD-RAM carts were compatible. The manual does a dubious job of clarifying what is compatible. Namely it says what it can't do back in 2007. Which is pretty vague in 2020. It does cartridge or non-cart DVD-RAM at 4.7gb or 9.4gb capacity. It does not do the smaller capacity or the 5.2GB type discs...which are odd size misfits anyway. BTW, it doesn't expressly say on the top or front, but it also can use DVD-R DL 8.5GB dual layer! Fantastic. My one complaint is that adjusting your antenna is kinda hard if you don't have a good outdoor antenna because it doesn't give you active signal levels until AFTER it has calibrated all the channels. I ended up using my old Zenith DTA to fix the signal level and then I got all the digital channels set up. Tuner does a great job with the newer digital channels. Hitting the B button on the bottom will pull up the signal levels for any problem channels so you can wiggle the antenna to get a better signal.

Recordable DVD had/ has so many different flavors. I bought a Sony mini DVD camcorder in 2005. I found that the most versatile mode was DVD-RW in VR mode. This allows trimming and deleting scenes without regard for where on the recording they lie.
@Italodancer6 жыл бұрын
DelilahThePig Yes ofcourse that will work. But does it play in other players before you finalize disk? But ofcourse you right and ram is also a disc. But the most coolest thing is that ram in cartridge. The disk is more safe there for scratches.....

wow, so many corrections with this. first off a TBC just corrects for the instability of video signals that are inherent to video tape. some TBC are frame synchronizes they do NOT digitize analog video signals. second the Panasonic device only accepts analog video (s-video, compnent, and composite) the Panasonic does the A/D conversation. in order to use a TBC correctly, a waveform and optional vectorscope should be used to optimally setup the levels. not setting things up correctly could cause tvs to lose sync. the Sony 1/2 machine you are using is a B&W machine. some 1/2 machines did have color, which is not compatability with your Sony machine. eiaj was a horrible format and was for the consumer.

I am very familiar with DVD-RAM's as I still use them for record and playback of on my Panasonic DVD/HDD recorder. One advantage of DVD-RAM's was you could record a TV show on them and then edit out the adverts just like you could do with the HDD. My laptop's CD/DVD drive can copy DVD-ram recordings to its hard drive as a .VRO movie file which can be played back on my laptop using the VLC media player.

I still use this exact model of Panasonic, as well as a couple of Panny DVD/HDD recorders for time-shifting on a daily basis. They've lasted this long with only some capacitors replaced. Most units on eBay have failed optics. A shame that consumer HDD units are only available as TiVo or cable/sat companies, besides using a tuner in your computer. DVD-RAMs are no longer made, the last ones I found were ordered direct from Japan through Amazon.
@aris955 жыл бұрын
Yes it is possible to copy dvd-ram disk files to pc computer (which has dvd-ram disc player) and rename that .VRO movie file as .MPG file and watch it with every movie player. Only thing is the aspect ratio which might need adjusting by some video editing program like Tipard video converter.

I have a similar panasonic dvd recorder (EZ49V) - despite the unassuming looks, it's a very serious piece of kit that I believe cost over £500 new in the UK. I got mine used from eBay and still paid over £150 for it because they're very unusual in being a combo unit with a HDMI unit and upscaling (a feature normally only found on blu-ray decks). DVDs look amazing played back through it especially on my 2008 Viera plasma and they also talk to each other so you can set recordings from the TV and vice versa. I'm still getting my head around all the features - I've also converted it to multi-region as my late wife was American and thus we have loads of R1 discs. My only gripes about it are the lack of a RF output (still useful to distribute signals around a large house using the existing antenna system) and the fact that you have to manually select between NTSC and PAL VHS playback - even my old cheap LG deck does this automatically, whereas doing so on the Panny involves delving into the menus. It's not the most user-friendly device I've ever owned, it almost seems one step down from pro kit in its complexity, but I can see why they now have a bit of a cult following especially amongst VHS fans.

The easiest way I ever found to transfer VHS to digital files is using the S-Video output of my S-VHS Mitsubishi VCR (in “edit” playback mode) plugged into my Panasonic HD/DVD-RAM recorder. From there I can place the DVD-RAM disc into my PC and transfer the DVD-Ram files to my PC/NAS.
@ShawnTewes8 жыл бұрын
Be interesting to see how the recorder handles the reel without the TBC, as those Panasonic units typically have their own stabilization function via the DIGA chips built in. Actually, you should be able to turn the DIGA feature off in the status menu, so that will allow you to test with the TBC excluding the recorder's processing.
@Gamersoft1124Pro4 ай бұрын
What the? At 10:49, the unit uses an LSI Logic CPU. Normally, Panasonic uses its own Panasonic MPEG decoder CPUs inside their hardware. It is cool to see an LSI inside Panasonic hardware on this kind of DVR. I have a Panasonic DMR-EX95V and EX98V VHS-HDD-DVD recorder, and both of them have a Panasonic CPU inside.

Can the Panasonic record sound only on DVD-RAM? In LP-mode a 4.7 GB disc can fit 9 h,. It records sound on the part that is for the picture too if the recorder detects no picture. But when a DVD-R is used the recorder records black picture even if there is nothing to record, the recording time is 4h in LP-mode always on the DVD-R.

Panasonic was one that supported DVD-RAM for many of theirs but it seems that they eventually dropped the compatibility. I know for sure that there were other brands too that supported the playback but I'd rather not name them until I can check and confirm first which ones did.

I hunted a set down and bought a 5 box, without cradle. Now, that is just for fun. I got blu-rays, dvd's, cd-roms I got enough actual storage material I use. But DVD-RAM is cool, you can see those little blocks on those and it is golden in the light ooooh. Even if it really isn't that special as storage medium. I guess the special part is that it uses UDF standard and works like a Floppy drive/HDD. That is something right. It is slow like molasses though and with its terrible access times it is worthless to actually uses as Floppy Drive or HDD.

You make the TBC sound like it is almost nothing inside, but try looking inside one that is a few years older. Also you should avoid any TBC that is not a "full frame TBC" because on a VHS deck like these there is no advance sync input. This TBC only works in this configuration because it is a "full frame TBC" (AKA frame Synchronizer) . Some TBCs are 16 line or 32 lines meaning that it is all they can buffer at a time) and REQUIRE the use of "advanced sync" to be within the 'window" of the time base corrector.
