Here we'll take a step back in harvesting history to when the IHC 706 tractor and IHC 402 pull-type combine were new.
These vintage machines were both built in the mid-1960's. The 402 was the less expensive version of the IHC 403 self-propelled combine.
Growers felt they had the tractor to pull it, so they saved some money in buying the pull-type. Not another motor to maintain was also the thinking.
There are no major equipment manufacturers that currently build a pull-type combine.
The grain truck is also from the mid-1960's.
Enjoy!

Exactly the right scale in my fantasy world of American farming. Great video.

Had one of these behind a 1206, great combine. I’m old enough to remember simple, back then it was embarrassing to have something you couldn’t fix yourself. Man I miss that!

I grew up on a 403 self-propelled - but same thing - you could fix it yourself

We pulled a 914 combine usually with a 1066. We also pulled it with a 1206 at times and even an 806. It also was a great combine.

@@tyfrank3427my great grandpa pulled two 914s with a 1466 and a 1086, and sometimes with an 806 as well back in the 60s/70s!

Great to see this machinery still operating, When it was all new it was possibly $10,000 dollars , now days you need a million dollars to buy equivalent .

This is very true. And these guys are doing the same thing for 1% of the cost. Just a little slower.. Well maybe more leisurely is a better term

these older combines seem to do a much better job cleaning the grain before it gets to the bin than the newer ones with fancy pants computers

People go too fast with the new ones. You can only shove so much stuff over the cleaning area.

I enjoyed this step back, that’s how we did it back when I was on the farm. There was no such thing as auto steer, you paid attention to what you where doing.

Don't want to get all "Green" on you, but spent many happy teenaged hours on a 4020 pulling a 106 JD. No monitors needed; I could "feel" what the combine was doing.

We had two IHC 403's but one neighbor had a 55 JD and the other across the road had 2 MF Super 92's. IHC had a strong dealer so there were of them few around .....

That is one of the cleanest samples I’ve seen .im only 39 but wow I had no idea machines Of that vintage could do thAt!! How wide is that swath and what gear rpm is that 706 running at? I am guessing 25 ft of swath at third low 2300 rpm . Ta off?

My dad and I used his 402 until he decided to retire from farming at age 75. He pulled his with an 886 but his tractor before that was a 706. Nothing wrong with the 706 but he wanted a tractor with a cab. The 706 did however run the 150 International combine he had before the 402. Just curious...where do you farm? There is a video on youtube of the combine. Search combining 2009.

Swathed wrong. For pull type combines, swath around the field. 90 degree turns are much easier on the equipment and keeps the crop flowing into the pickup.

Are you able to find parts for it? I found one that looks pretty good. Any wear parts that are especially hard to make, or find? Nice video. Now days farming can be taken out by the weather, or a hacker. Yikes! Simple was hard enough.

I've got an 80. So far by Google searching part numbers I've been able to find what I need. Bearings, idler pulleys, belts, guards and sickle sections are easy. I've managed to find the steel sleeves with the rubber bushings inside and fiber bushings for the separator on ebay. Some stuff I'll have to make like a chain tensioner which is just a block of hardwood and the retractable fingers in the platform auger need new guides which will probably be made of plastic. Haven't needed to mess with them yet, but I think the elevator chains shouldn't be hard to find. The only parts I'm worried about finding is the rasp bars but mine have a decent amount of life yet. Different machine, smaller, slightly older but I'll bet many of those same parts I mentioned are used in the bigger machines of the time.

Why would you swath the wheat first, then pick it up with a combine? Why not just combine everything at once like normal? Oh well, just seems like an extra step and more work.
