in this video we will show how to add an isolation tranformer to a series filament "widowmaker" amplifier - a vintage 1961 Danelectro Cadet Model 122. This same procedure will work on pretty much any vintage guitar amp of this type. These amps have no power transformer so in order to improve safety, some things need to change. We'll explore those changes and check out the tone with a demo at the end. The guitars used are a BigD Guitars Bourbon Barrell Telecaster and a PRS CE24.

WATCH PART 2 HERE: kzbin.info/www/bejne/fZnRYWd4rrisqKc POSTSCRIPT: Someone sent me an actual schematic and it shows the adjustable cap between B+ reservoir node and 12AU6 screen grid. I'm assuming this is some kind of arcane feedback with selectable frequencies. Any ideas?

Brad, have you looked at these Hammond transformers? They have actually some more OEM type 1:1 mains transformers that are like around 10-15 bucks each. That's still doable for these old amps. First thing they need is a transformer. Will look for a link.

My guess is that the cap is some kind of neutralization circuit (prevents oscillation). But that's usually not seen until you get up into radio frequency stuff. Those kinds of caps are usually pretty small value.

I had one of these when I was 12 years-old. My father purchased it second hand in 1972. It shocked the hell outta me dozens of times. It was important that I wore shoes and only played guitar in the house. We had a BBQ at my house one day and my father wanted to me to play outside on the patio. Bare feet on a concrete patio, my dad ended up calling an ambulance. I don't think I was getting the full 115VAC. Shocks ranged from being uncomfortable to outright painful with a sharp bite. We never took the amp in for repair as the solution was just to keep the amp in my bedroom -- jeez! I blame that amp for my lack of guitar ability -- its an as good an excuse as anything else :). Love your channel. Very much a total reality to repairs and the business. You got some great chops.

I’ve said it probably a dozen times by now, but Brad, you’ve got to be just about my favorite player on KZbin. You’ve got an incredibly unique style and I can’t think of anyone I’ve ever heard that played like you. Would be a lot of work on your part, but I would love maybe a “best of” sort of video just made up of a bunch of your amp demo and out to jams. Hell, if it was just a single recording of you sitting on the couch noodling I’d eat it up. As for this video, I really like how every so often, especially on these simple amps, you actually break down what we are looking at and what you are doing, sort of beginner friendly type of content. For someone that doesn’t have a clue what is going on, these are a good place to start. The amp seemed to be pretty good, but the speaker was really holding it back. Way too small and probably just shitty in general. Stay safe and stay healthy.

Really happy to see a great little amp repair! I've gone through at least 3 years of channel 1 videos, and I've picked through channel 2 quite extensively, and with Covid outside, I've had lots of days spent watching your videos all day, they make the hours fly by, and I appreciate what you do. I sure wish I'd started watching KZbin videos sooner, I found you on my first, or second day of checking around, and now I rarely watch anything else. Reason I wish I'd started sooner is because the first video I watched I really liked your wit, and wisdom, but the second video started with the Douglas Adams line, then I knew if we ever got to talking, we'd end up friends, thus my "Desparately want to talk." line that was probably a little too repetitive. Anyway, fix some shit, and one of these days shout back at me. Peace, Keith

Hey Brad! Good job on this little amp! The amp is much safer for the player now that you've added the mains isolation transformer. Only thing is I worry about the stability of the mounting of the isolation transformer. All its weight is hanging off the 2 transformer mounting bolts through the 'compressed ants nest' rear panel!. I can't help but feel nervous about the long term stability of this mounting method. I would have glued & bolted a, say 5 or 6 inch square earthed aluminium plate to the rear panel first. Then I would have bolted the transformer to this plate for a much more physically stronger assembly, Of course, you may have already discussed this option with the customer who may have turned it down due to additional costs, although you never mentioned this. But it sounds great with you playin it though!

Regarding the shock hazard of these, and many of the in-case amps, Danelectro guitars had their circuitry shielded, and omitted the string grounding wire. This at least reduced the chance of being electrocuted, as the only potentially live part would be the jack. As I recall, the guitars were labelled "totally shielded", or something like that. Hope this clears things up a little.

That’s true. These shouldn’t be left plugged in when not in use. You could move the fuse to primary too. But the switch and fuse are acting as terminals for a few things, so I’d need to add a terminal strip somewhere on the chassis. Wouldn’t want it on a screw through the Masonite.

When I think of all the electric shocks we used to get playing guitars while standing on basement floors or taking a hit through the lips while singing into an out of phase PA microphone, with these old unisolated amplifier circuits I wonder how we survived at all. At the time we thought it was funny when a band member would get zapped. It was just accepted as part of playing an electric guitar.

I might build and send you a series-string amp one of these days...of course it will have line isolation.

Maybe I'm wrong, but was the 12AU6 plate pin connected straight to the volume pot without a coupling cap between them?

@@TheGuitologist Nice, I'll be waiting :-) Mistakes can happen to anyone. I wondered about that wiring when I saw the video, waiting for a later correction. Didn't see anyone else commenting it, so I started to doubt myself whether it was a wiring mistake or not.

@@wayshot I'm watching vid now and wondering why the schematic shows the volume pot between pre & power stages, and the actual amp has vol & tone pots BEFORE the pre amp tube.

Nice to see a Russian Roulette amp [ series filament ] turned into a safe to use vintage amp with a future. Sounds great I thought.

I got zapped with an old amp. Exactly the situation you described about the plug going into the wall. My strings became live on the guitar. As soon as I went to go hit an E chord it threw me across the room, knocked me unconscious. My wife says I screamed but I don't remember doing it. I damn near killed myself.

Is it normal to have the isolation transformer before the switch/fuse when built into a cab? I would probably have made it the other way...
@brianmcallister1960
@brianmcallister1960 4 жыл бұрын
I too would have put the switch and fuse in the primary circuit of the Isolation transformer. The way that it is, if the amp is left plugged in, the transformer is always powered up and could be a fire hazard in the event of a power surge when it is unattended. I know that it should be unplugged when not in use, but many people ignore that advice.

Yes you are now depending on the circuit breaker in your house fuse box for protection (15 or 20 amps).
@TheGuitologist
@TheGuitologist 4 жыл бұрын
That’s true. These shouldn’t be left plugged in when not in use. You could move the fuse to primary too. But the switch and fuse are acting as terminals for a few things, so I’d need to add a terminal strip somewhere on the chassis. Wouldn’t want it on a screw through the Masonite. Maybe another empty rectifier terminal...
