Krishna Rao had learnt his music from his father Shankar Pandit who was a disciple of Bade Nisar Hussain Khan. Bade Nisar Husain Khan was an adopted son of Ustad Nathu Khan, the younger brother of Haddu Khan and Hassu Khan of Gwalior. They themselves were disciples of Bade Mohammad Khan whose great grandson Akbar Ali Khan the last surviving Ustad of Rudr Veena and Khyal vocalist died in Hyderabad at nearly the age of a 100 in 1980s.
