One thing that got edited out, by mistake, was the PAINT!!!! Ugh!!! Usually about $5000 to pay someone else for bodywork and paint. Doing it yourself about $500 and up PLEASE NO POLITICS IN THE COMMENTS HERE

@@SladesVWBeetle I think you could do all layers except the top coat yourself. Without a paint booth, it’s gonna be tricky. With diligent prep work and sanding done by yourself, you can save thousands of euros/dollars. For smaller repairs, rattle cans could be an option.

No car is cheap to restore anymore, including the cheap ones! I definitely agree that saving any original parts that are salvageable or working on the car, is the way to go. Replacement parts, even good quality ones, are rarely as good quality as the originals VW put on.
@SladesVWBeetleАй бұрын
I absolutely agree hundred percent! I always try to save as many original parts as possible. Even if it means doing a little bit of bodywork or something else. Thank you for being here.
@oniondeluxe9942Ай бұрын
I agree. Some original parts are fairly easy to restore, while others could be a pain though. Worn out mechanical parts are a challenge. And also parts with different surface treatment than just painting.
@maryyoung6380Ай бұрын
Everything you list off here is spot on. There are so many parts to the old Beetles. They were so well made. I had a 1971 Super Beetle same color as in video. Drove it for 18 years!! I now drive a 2004 new beetle with 57,000 original miles on it. New Beetles do not have the charm as the older Beetles. I just overhauled my Beetle at close to 20,000.00 over the last two years, which is much more than what I purchased it for. I started with new overhead lining, engine overhauled, replaced all the fuses lights, window regulators, you name it.. everything you can imagine. It is going to be my last car! They really are fun to drive. Nothing sounds as nostalgic as the older Beetles, though. They have a sound all their own. This is a great video. Thanks!!

It all depends on what tools you've got at your disposal. And with proper tools, everything will go smoother. A two pillar lift, TIG welder, a real spot welder, sheet metal forming tools, a decent compressor, hydraulic press and a blasting cabinet might not be absolutely necessary, but will certainly affect the results, and minimize how much you will curse during your project. Then, add all the hand tools (fortunately, the beetle doesn't require as many as most other cars, but still). And you need somewhere to store all these things, and if you have to rent a workshop/garage, then the meter starts ticking.

When I was a teen back in the 90s, I went through JC Whitney catalog and added up everything I planned on doing just like this (paint not included) and it was right around $2000. Back then people were pretty much giving away old VWs just to get them out of their yard--WITH TITLES!

Hi Slade, even a cheap build is not cheap that's for sure. It is fun to work on these at least the engines. The 65 bug i had in the early 70's was still pretty new so didn't have to work on the body or interior. A friend backed into the fender and put a big dent in it. Even that I didn't work on but after the body shop fixed and painted it couldn't tell it ever happened. Plus it was cheap. A couple hundred bucks his insurance paid for it. Times sure have changed.

I agree, there is a LOT of expenses involved in restoring a beetle. What do you already have for tools? What do you already have for supplies? How much can you do on your own? And about a million more decisions you have to make. What might be interesting would be to estimate maybe the 4-5 real big expenses: 1) Body work, including welding, purchasing and fabricating of parts 2) Engine rebuilding-full vs maybe just the top end 3) Parts and Supplies, including fenders, headliners, miscellaneous do dads and what-nots, solvents, greases, screws and bolts, gaskets, etc ad nauseum. 4) Pre-paint, paint supplies, tools, ugh! and paint (one of the biggest IMHO) 5) (not at all small---- SHIPPING EXPENSES!!! yeah, those KILL ya!! BTW, if ya had to pin me down, 1) $5k, 2) $1.5k, 3) $4K, 4) $5K, easy, maybe more, and I did my own! 5) $500 Total=>>$15K, and THAT'S conservative. Oh, and for me, an added expense: let's see- 2 welders and helmets, (yeah, I know.. Bad first choice), machine metal shears, 2 engine hoists or supports, and countless other tools or shop needs......$5K EASY!!! Total expense of restoring said beetle? Darn near >$20K. Yeah, reality sucks! But.....Value of driving said Beetle downtown, getting all the comments, the looks, and yes, hearing that sound again of the brake pedal makes when ya get off the pedal to hit the gas.. PRICELESS!! HEhehe, Good on ya Slade!

I have a mechanic specialist who has been in the VW world for 53 years and he tells me every time how prices keep rising. Imagine in the past around the 80s - 90s restoring an engine cost around (with labor) $2000 to $2500 CAD, today with the economic situation we are talking about a restoration just in mechanics which can go up to $7000 or even $10,000 CAD for a full restoration. We are losing what this car was really made for. An economical, quality car that did not cost much to maintain. My father and i restored our 1969 in 2015 and when i look to the price we pay 10 years ago compared to today, thats just shocking.
