Ustad Enayat Khan was one of India's most influential sitar and surbahar players in the history of Hindusthani Classical Music in the first decades of the 20th Century. He was the father of Vilayat Khan, one of the top most sitariyas in the field of Indian Classical Music of the postwar period.
Enayat Khan was born in Uttar Pradesh into a family of musicians. His father was the great sitar maestro Imdad Khan, who taught him the sitar and surbahar (bass sitar) in the family style, known as the Imdadkhani Gharana or Etawah Gharana (school),named after a small village near Agra called Etawah. He married Basiran Bibi, daughter of khyal singer Bande Hussain. The Imdadkhani gharana is a North Indian school of sitar and surbahar music. It was named after its founder, Imdad Khan (1848-1920), and is also known as the Etawah gharana, after a small town close to Agra where Imdad Khan lived. The Khan family is one of the most renowned musical familiess from India. With its roots in Etawah on the outskirts of Agra before finally branching out to Calcutta with Enayat Khan and Hyderabad, Indore and Mumbai with Wahid Khan and Vilayat Khan. The gharana's achievements include the development of the Surbahar, major structural changes to both the sitar and surbahar and the creation and development of the instrumental style known as the gayaki ang (vocal style performed on sitar) by Vilayat Khan and this style of sitar is now known as the Vilayatkhani sitar.Living performers of the family include Imrat Khan, Shahid Parvez, Shujaat Khan, Nishat Khan, Irshad Khan, Wajahat Khan, Hidayat Khan and Zila Khan who is the first female performer of this gharana.Ustad Enayat Khan settled with his family in Calcutta, where, though he only lived to 43, he did much pioneering work on the sitar. For example, he standardised its physical dimensions and added the upper resonator gourd, which is very popular with today's players (though his own descendants have not kept using it). In a place rapidly developing into an important North Indian centre of the arts, at a time where interest in national culture was strong fuelled by the struggle for independence, he brought sitar music out from its narrow connoisseur circles to new mass audiences. Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore was a musical collaborator and personal friend of Ustadji's. Ustad Enayat Khan died young, with four children. His two sons, Vilayat Khan and Imrat, were trained in the Imdadkhani style by other members of his extended family. Vilayat learned the sitar and Imrat the surbahar; both were to become milestones of Indian Classical Music. Some of Enayat Khan's recordings have been released on CD.
This is such a rare compilation released from the precious archives. This is a collection of ragas brilliantly rendered by ustadji such as BHairavi, Multan, Pilu, Jogiya, Bhupali etc. This one is a rare jewel worthy of a true Hindusthani Classical Music lover.

Wonderful playing combination of both right and left hand beautiful combination of both tantrakari and gayaki but Vilayat Khan modified it to give more importance to left hsnd technique of Khayal ang playing with long meends and tans

Vilayat Khan confessed that because he could not play in the style of Enayet Khan he developed the khyal ang etc in his style. But on any given day his father's left hand was way ahead than that of his son, and Enayet's right hand was incomparable

Is these are copyright free? I want to clear the audios and make separate piece of every single part, and giving it a good graphics, and upload from my channel as a raaga series by ut Enayet Khan for better listening purpose of public. I request to you kindly reply my comment. I am serving this gharana from my childhood. My gurus guru was Omiyakanti Bhattacharya who was the topmost disciple of ut Enayet Khan. Now I am a disciple of ut Shahid Parvez Khan. So I want to do this work to preserve our gharana's legendary works for long.

Rais khan ke pitaji shri Mohammad khan sahab ne in fono ko apne ghar me rakhkar khoob taleem dee. In saari baton ki jaankari rais khan sahab ki maa ke interview se patachalati hai. Par vilayat khan iss baat ko kabhi bhi aam janta ke saamne nahi bole iss baat ka rais khan sahab ko bahut dukh aur gussa tha.(as per that interview).

Ustadji’s rendition of Purvi is semi-divine. The fact that he is forgotten shows that the Imdadkhani Ghranara uses him only as a steeping stone and a footnote in furtherance of their present conceit. Shameful.

vilayat Khan is a greatest sitar maestro but his claim that he established gayaki Ang in sitar playing is not fair as his father is plying six notes mind in one stroke but it is not that much effective due to lower scale and large size that what VK made short for better sound quality is surely a contribution of ustad VK.

Ustad Mohammad Khan the father of Rais Khan Sahab may be you are talking about but Mohammad Khan Sahab and Enayat Khan Sahab are of same time and age group I suppose. Enayat Khan Sahab is disciple of Imdad Khan Sahab only History knows it well 🙏🏻.

You need to understand Vilayat Khan lost his father Enayat Khan at early age of 4 years and got tutored by Ustaad Amir Khan renowned vocalist. So VKs does not or rarely follows his father style. During that time there was no you tube video to listen his father playings, may be he got few records player of his father...

Ustad Vilayat Khan learned sitar from his uncle Ustad Waheed Khan. He also learned nuances of classical vocal from his maternal grandfather and uncle. Ustad Amir Khan was his friend as well as brother-in-law, and someone he looked up to. He was not his teacher.

This is beautiful and nothing like Vilayat Khan's music in form structure and style. This is brilliant. Close to this was probably Alauddin or Ravishankar, but the right hand of Enayet Khan was too beautiful elegant and stylish even for them.

Maybe because ustad vilayat didn't take complete training in imdad khani baaj of his grandfather Ustad Imdad khan. Bimal mukherjee has much more training in imdad khani baaj and can be heard in his kafi recording.

It's sursaptak, played by none other than Ustad Enayat Khan. He even boldly declares at the the end, "Enayat Khan, Sakhawat Hussain ka baap" ("Enayat Khan, the father of Sakhawat Hussain") It has been edited out in this version.
