Hi guys, note that at 40:55 I say that the heart cam is "at its flattest" when the chronograph seconds hand is at 30 seconds. Not sure why I chose those words, but the reason we test at 30 seconds (ideally it would be at 6 hours, 15 minutes and 30 seconds so all cams were in the same position) is that at that time, the hammer will hit the sharpest point of the heart cam. If there is an issue with the cam or the hammer, this is the point where you are most likely to see those issues. The chronograph seconds hand is much more likely to have these issues than the minute and hour counters, so we are in general good with only checking that hand like this.

1. This watch is a beauty beauty beauty. 2. I never understood how anybody in their right mind could use a snap on / pressed caseback. There are so many elegant ways of doing case backs. Screw down or screw-in are two of the best. It breaks my heart (and my eyes to be honest) when even watch makers have to poke the case open with some metal blade applying all kinds of forces, shaking etc...

This watch is my daily and the complications are perfect for a dunce like me who can never remember what day it is 🤣 It has been running like a champ but recently it just stopped running. My wife got me a very similar watch to this one from Longines (the “Master Complications”) when we got engaged. Honestly, it looks to me like the biggest differences between them are a different handset and the presence of the moon phase indicator on my Longines.

Hi Tiger, yes, your watch likely has the L687 movement, which is based on the 7751. It has a column wheel instead of the cam, making it a bit more special, but is otherwise very similar. I think a lot of people would say your Longines is better value than this Omega 😉

I have this model and a 321 movement Speedmaster bought in 1967. I believe the movements are completely different. Love to see the difference. They’ve both been recently serviced at a cost of much more then the original price. By the way, Great video!

Hello Mac, yes, the 321 is radically different from this one. The 321 is a manual winding Lemania movement, while this one has an automatic Valjoux 7751. The 321 is considered the superior movement, and is of course the movement used in the Professional version, aka the Moon watch. So your Moon watch is probably worth 3-4 times more than your automatic :)

Revisiting this video and reading the comments, I cannot feel but let down by Omega. The movement of this watch - despite some of the decorations - looks extremely cheaply made; all the press cut gears, springs and bridges in particular. Also the hands and dial lack class. Maybe I am just too old and still too enthralled by those older, copper-plated movements with beautiful dials they used to make. The only values that deserve highest highest praise here are - as always - your expertise, comments and the quality of your video.

I own the exact model of Omega Speedmaster Automatic with a 1151 movement, right down to the silver on silver dials. It was very interesting to see the tear down, cleaning and reassembling. I can see why Swatch charges so much for a complete overhaul. Perhaps I'll send it to you for the next overhaul. Mine is also set for plus 1 second a day

Hi Guy, thanks for watching and for your comment! If you send your Speedie to Omega/Swatch, they will also change a lot of components in it, typically also things like the crown, the pushers and anything that shows a modicum of wear. That's the main reason they charge so much.

I think I'd be happy with anything that was well-made and historied. Hello Jack, thanks for watching! Your question is not silly whatsoever, it is probably one that absolutely everyone working on watches struggle with. The easiest answer is when you're working on a relatively modern watch, like this one, where you can find the technical communication. In it, all the screws are listed with drawings. For older watches, it comes down to an understanding of what different types of screws are intended for, e.g. a screw with a shoulder has a different purpose to a flat headed screw. And it's always a good idea to put the screw right back in its hole after taking the part off if you are uncertain or if you are working on a complicated watch.

Thanks again for a great video. The use of the etachron tool to change the position of the hairspring relative to the index pins was both fascinating and illuminating. Did you use a microscope to see what direction you needed to rotate the stud holder, or was it more trial and error while the balance assembly remained running while watching its performance on the timegrapher?

Hello Daniel, thanks for that! I mostly watch the timegrapher while adjusting the regulator, but I use the microscope to inspect if the hairspring is in the middle of the index pins and to see if the gap is how it should be. You can also look at how the hairspring develops, it should develop more evenly after you adjust the stud carrier.

@@VintageWatchServices Well, again, seeing that aspect of watch repair/restoration was great. As a hobbyist, the balance assembly is the area of greatest trepidation for me. When I acquire a vintage watch to service/restore I hope and pray that the balance assembly functions properly from the outset. While I have replaced hairsprings, adjusted the collet for beat error, and moved index pins, it has typically been while holding my breath in the hope I won't botch it. That adjustment you made on the stud holder brought it all to a new level for me. Thanks for the reply.

Thanks for another interesting and informative episode where I learned that not all Speedmaster Reduced watches have ETA 2892's with a Dubois Depraz module but, indeed, some have ETA 7750's! That's a nice looking watch that you have there by the way. I've heard that some watchmakers (including Omega itself) don't like servicing the DP modules and simply replace the whole assembly instead of servicing it . I was wondering if you had any thoughts on the matter? Looking forward to your next offering.....possibly something with Val 72 cal under the hood coming up. Thanks.

Thanks Randy! Most of the 90's Speedie Automatics have 775x movements, but perhaps most notably the Schumacher ones have the DD module. The DD module is finicky at best, with a lot of floating parts. I hope to get my hands on one soon to make a special horror show episode 😬

I had wondered about using lino or vinyl on the floor instead of carpet. I used to work in a telephone exchange, and the floor had lino on it. From time to time I did drop a small screw or such like, and if it landed on the floor then, if you got down close to the floor, you could see that part. I don't know how I'd have gotten on looking for one of those small springs if it landed on the floor, but I think it would be a bit easier than with carpet.

Good question... Could be that someone opened the watch and fiddled around, and if you're not really sure what you're doing or don't have proper testing equipment but the watch seems to run fine, well... I really wouldn't know.

Hello, thanks for watching! Most of the time you can use a generic movement holder, but when you're placing the hands it's very convenient to have a special 7750 holder with built-in pushers.

Hello Karol, thanks for your question! I'm a simple guy and haven't really seen a lot of differences between different fluids. So I've resorted to a simple setup: Elma WF Pro cleaning fluid in the first two jars and Elma Suprol Pro in the last two. For the ultrasonic cleaning of the case I however use four or five different fluids, depending on the metal of the case.

I seems to me that you don't change the mainspring as often as (I think) other watchmakers do. In this case, with a Valjoux 7751, wouldn't that make sense?

Hello Aurelius, if a mainspring still is in good condition you don't need to change it, and you could even argue that it's better not to. The main reason is that a stronger mainspring will lead to more strain on the movement, and thus more wear. And for a vintage watch you'd rather reduce the wear a little bit than improve the timekeeping with a second or two. The other reason is that the correct mainspring may not be easy to find. That's of course not the case for this watch, as you indicate. This said, it's indeed very common for a lot of watchmakers to always put in a new mainspring. It will pretty much guarantee a high amplitude and help make the watch run more accurately as a result.

I've noticed you like to put the screws back after you remove the part. How do you know they were in the correct spot on a watch that may have been "serviced" before?

Hello Matthew, that's a great question! Sometimes screws can be in the wrong place from the previous service but mostly that would lead to issues. Thus if the watch runs well after the service, it should be fine. For newer watches the technical communication is also easier to find, so you have a reference of in doubt.

There is a newer model of this watch with a more silver dial and the GMT subdial has a hand with an arrow at the end. Does that use the same movement?

Thanks for watching! When you see a Speedmaster with the subdials at 6, 9 and 12, it has a version of the 7750 inside it. Sometimes even with the subdials at 3, 6 and 9 :)

I dont understand how a mechanical watch can be less complicated if it has an automatic feature a day night indicator, a double quickset, an extra button on the side, a month, and day of the week, plus is a smaller frame! Than one without like the regular non auto speedmaster...

Thanks for watching and for your question! It's a complicated story... Omega has a long and very proud story of manufacturing their own movements before the quartz crisis (although their chronographs used Lemania movements, Lemania being part of the same group of companies). They started using ETA movements during the quartz crisis to save costs, and also as the 10xx family of movements were less than enthusiastically received... They started making in-house again in the mid 2000's, but in reality most of these movements were made by ETA to Omega's specifications. Only in the last few years have they started using true in-house movements again, but ETA still contributes technology and manufacturing, as far as I know. So it's complicated 😄

Hello Mohnad, thanks for watching and for your question! 1861 is essentially the 861 with rhodium plating instead of copper. They're both very high grade calibers that are not too difficult to service for experienced watchmakers, but I wouldn't recommend touching them unless you really know what you do.

Hello Mervyn, thanks for watching! The type of back depends on the specific reference, but newer Speedmaster Automatics indeed come with screw down backs. Screw down backs are in general a better solution for a watch, but it doesn't necessary reflect on the value of it.

How about a long story that nobody cares to hear or will actually read? This was my first non-rep mechanical watch. When the time comes for a service, I don’t think I will tackle it because of this video! Mine has the small clasp that is the logo in the square. I love the watch but dislike the lack of any micro adjustment in the clasp. Anyway, I went into Omega to see about getting a clasp like yours, and they acted like I brought in something that they knew nothing about and it was ridiculous for me to think they would. That is when I realized that Omega is just a big box store for watches from a huge soulless corporation. Despite the large man with wizard shoes who unlocks the door to let you in and out of the store, the magical feeling of getting something special or unique just isn’t there in reality. They don’t value or obsess over their historical watches or even know anything about them… they are only interested in broken record reboots of the same concepts they call ‘special editions.’ Meh. It’s a bummer - I still love the watch, but the romance just isn’t there. So, I continue to search for in house movements and independent brands that have an authentic history. It is surprisingly difficult to find brands that fit that criteria and have vintage watches with something special that are 39+mm

only thing I cannot grasp is the value under parameters. It shows two values, bph (18000 and up) but also a number of degrees (52 very often (with 18000) or 49 with 28800. What does that number of degrees (what type of degrees?) mean ?

Thanks for watching! The lift angle is the angular rotation of the balance wheel while the impulse pin is in contact with the pallet fork. This value has a direct impact on the amplitude, seeing as the timegrapher calculates the balance wheel's rotation based on the time between the impulse pin hitting the insides of the pallet fork from each direction.
